To use this disk click on icons in normal way.
(1) When you double click on "Virus_checker" icon a small "window" will
appear across the title bar saying "Virus_checker No5.06 by John
Veldthuis" . Note. This number changes as Virus_checker is updated.
(2) Place your arrow over the "Virus_checker" window and "pull" the window
down about half an inch.
(3) You will find the title bar now has a running record of the number
of disks checked and the viruses found. This will change as disks are
checked. The window must not be "ghosted" or this will not work.i.e.
window must have been clicked on to make it "active"
(4) Remove "Virus_checker" disk from drive and put all the disks you wish
to check for virus into the drive one at a time.If you watch the
"Virus_checker" window you will see a message saying "Checking disk in
Dfn" (where "n" is the number of the drive)
(5) If you do not get any message, that's good.
(6) If you get a message warning you "Have a Non-Standard Boot Block" that
is usually O.K. as many Non standard boot blocks are protection devices
used by programmers. You should "Ignore" this message by pointing at the
"Ignore" message and clicking left mouse button.
(7) If you get a message warning you "Disk has been infected with the 'XXX'
virus" (where XXX is the name of the virus) point at the "Remove"
message and click left mouse button. The virus will be removed. On the
odd occasion some games will not now run, but this is a small price to
pay for keeping "virus free". You can probably get a good copy of a game
replaced from the dealer you bought it from.
(8) If you wish a specific drive to be checked for Xeno + IRQ viruses click
once on "Virus_checker" window with the right mouse button and enter
drive name to be checked in the small window (string gadget) which comes
up and click on "Check Drive". Drive will then be checked.Read John's
Virus_checker.doc on this disk to see why you may need to do this check.
It appears these viruses are not in the boot block and may be imported
in a file and not show up until later when you are having strange
problems.
This covers most uses of the "Virus_Checker" disk. The club provide it FREE
and we must be very, very, grateful to John Veldthuis, who keeps his finger
on the pulse and keeps knocking off these nasties.
If you have a problem, refer to a Committee member as soon as you can to
make sure you have not picked up an unknown virus. If you find a strange
one, keep this disk so John can check it out for us.
MOST IMPORTANT ! !
CHECK EVERY DISK THAT COMES INTO YOUR HOUSE. EVEN A BRAND NEW PROGRAM FROM A
REPUTABLE DEALER OR YOUR BEST FRIEND MAY BE INFECTED.
CHECK THEM ALL ! !
