DMS-A-Disk.Doc - The document you are now reading
DMS-A-Disk.Doc .info - The icon for this document
DMS102.LZH - The archive containing version 1.02 of the program DMS
and documents from SDS (DMS is NOT freeware)
Overview:
DMS-A-Disk was created as an aid to using the whole disk archive utility DMS
completely from a workbench environment. The program DMS is not FreeWare.
The archive of the sharewre version of DMS1.02 has been included in this
archive, and is required to operate this program. For DMS-A-Disk to operate
correctly it MUST find the program DMS in your assigned C directory (and
must be spelled exactly "DMS"). The file requesters for crunching a disk
or uncrunching a .DMS file default to VD0: (The recoverable RAM disk device
- available from ASDG). If you do not have VD0: mounted, cancel the
requester which asks for volume vd0 to be inserted in any drive, and the
file requester will now reflect the path where the program DMS-A-Disk
currently resides. At this point you may select any valid path using the
drawer and parent gadgets on the file requester. DMS-A-Disk provides the
option of crunching a disk using NoZero or without NoZero. NoZero should
be used when crunching disks which are NonDOS (most typically games). In
addition, all disks can be crunched using either default compression or
deep compression. Deep compression is significantly slower than default
compression and the extra compression gained is modest. Default compression
is probably adequate for most uses. If the size of a crunched disk file
turns out to be larger than the amount of space on an 880K floppy using
default compression, you may be able to make the file small enough to fit
on the disk using the deep setting. All disks are crunched from floppy
drive df0:, and all .DMS files are uncrunched to blank disks in DF0: - by
default. All .DMS files of disks crunched using DMS can be tested to see if
their structure is sound by way of the test a file gadget.
Crunching a disk to a .DMS file:
Select crunch a disk, toggle the NoZero option off or on, select default
compression (by clicking on the no gadget for deep compression) or deep
compression, and click on the window where indicated. You will now be
presented with the file requester, at which time you should select the
path where you would like your crunched .DMS to be written. You will also
need to give this file a name, by typing this in the file string field.
The .DMS extension is optional when naming your file. If it is not added it
will automatically be provided by the program. Select OK on the file
requester and you will be asked to insert the disk to be crunched in DF0:.
During the crunching process a window will be opened so that you may
monitor it's progress, and will automatically closed when completed. At
this time you will be returned to the main control panel, where you will
have the option of crunching another disk, uncrunching a .DMS file, testing
a .DMS file, or quitting DMS-A-Disk,by clicking on the close gadget. You
may also abort the crunching or uncrunching process at any point by
clicking on the close gadget, which will return you to the main control
panel.
Uncrunching a .DMS file:
Select the uncrunch a file gadget, click on the window to receive the file
requester, and enter the path where the .DMS file resides. Select the .DMS
file you wish to uncrunch, and it's name will appear in the file string
field. Select OK and you will be asked to insert a blank disk in DF0:.
This blank disk does NOT have not be formatted. DMS-A-Disk will uncrunch
the .DMS file and write it to this disk, automatically formatting it if it
is not formatted, and writing over all information which is currently on
the disk during the uncrunching process.
NOTE: ALL INFORMATION WHICH IS ON THIS DISK WILL BE PERMANENTLY LOST
AFTER THE UNCRUNCHING PROCESS.
During the uncrunching process a window will be opened where the progress of
the information being written to the disk may be monitored. This window is
opened full screen - if your workbench is non interlaced, and half screen -
if your workbench is interlaced; allowing you to view the boot block of
crunched disks in which this boot block is non standard so that you may
examine it for the presence of viruses during the uncrunching process. Boot
blocks which are standard will not be displayed during the uncrunching
process. The window will close automatically as soon as the uncrunching
process is finished.
Testing a .DMS file
To test the integrity of a .DMS file (a file which has been created by
crunching a disk using DMS) click on the "Test A File" gadget. After
clicking on the next window the file requester window will appear, where
the path and filename of the .DMS file to be tested is specified. A window
will open which will show the .DMS file being tested and display the final
result (i.e. if the .DMS file is OK or not), after which time this window
will automatically close. If a file is chosen to be tested which is not a
valid .DMS file then this window will not automatically close - to close it
type endcli and you will be at the main control panel, where you may try
again or quit the program.
