Blast ZONE! v3.3
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
by Zone Master of ZoneSoft Software
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
and the WordUp Graphics Toolkit v4.5
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------
Description:
------------
Blast Zone is your typical shoot'em up game with powerups,
hordes of really disgusting aliens and bosses. It is not
meant to compare with any commercial software on the market
nor do I expect it too. However, it is fun and the aliens
aren't all that disgusting anyway.
-------------
Requirements:
-------------
- 386 SX or better (486 recommended but not required)
- 256 color VGA monitor and at least 256k DRAM
- Microsoft (c) compatible mouse & driver loaded
- 100% compatible SoundBlaster or GUS soundcard
----------
Objective:
----------
Blast the aliens or be blasted. You will recieve 100 points for
each alien destroyed multiplied by whatever level you may be
on. Bosses are worth 10 times that. You start the game with a
limited number of ships, etc. etc. End of story.
------
Setup:
------
Run the SETUP program that is included with the archive package.
It will let you configure your soundcard port and irq addresses.
This is basically all the setup you need to do. Don't delete any
of the files (other than the *.DOC files or FILE_ID.DIZ) or you
might run into some problems later on, and we wouldn't want that
now would we. The game itself does extensive hardware and software
checks so accidently deleting a needed game file will cause the
game not to run.
---------
Controls:
---------
When the game finishes its startup checks you will have before you
a dropdown menu as follows:
GAME INPUT SKILL HELP OPTION
- GAME menu
-----------
START is in essense just that it starts the game rolling.
If you do not select a controller type with the INPUT menu,
movement and firing will default to keyboard control.
MUSIC just turns the music on/off. In order for CD audio
to work (Registered version) you must turn this off.
CDPLAY enables CD audio player (Registered version) :)
(Play your own audio CD's while blasting away!!)
ABOUT just tells you the version number and who made this
game.
HotKeys are:
[S]TART
[M]USIC
[C]DPLAY
[A]BOUT

JOYST
KEYBD
MOUSE
Following is an explanation of how each controller type effects
gameplay:
---------
Joystick:
---------
- The JOY pad/stick will move you in 8 of the directions.
- BUTTON 1 will fire your lasergun.
- BUTTON 2 will launch a blastbomb.
* NOTE: when selecting this option you will have to calibrate
the joystick after selecting it. If the program does
not find a joystick it will default to keyboard control.
---------
Keyboard:
---------
- UP moves your ship upward and towards ultimate doom.
- DOWN moves your ship downward with hasty retreat.
- LEFT moves your ship exit stage left.
- RIGHT moves your ship exit stage right.
- SPACE fires your laser gun at unsuspecting aliens.
- The 'B' key will launch a blastbomb into their face.
------
Mouse:
------
- The MOUSE itself will move you around the starfield in all 8
directions, and makes for a rather interesting game. If you
move forward (up) to far the aliens will get pretty nervous
and increase their attacking speed, so don't do this to often.
- The LEFT mousebutton fires your laser at oncoming baddies.
- The RIGHT mousebutton launches a blastbomb, if you have any
that is.

Other Keys:
-----------
- The ESC key will pause the current game in session. You can always
press 'Y' for Yes to return to the menu or 'N' for No to keep
blasting alien butt.
- Pressing 'S' while in the Docking Bay will bring up the Weapons
Shop screen where you can buy/sell various items provided you have
the credits. Pressing 'D' will exit the shop.
- While in the shop use the mouse to select the items you wish to
buy / sell with the corresponding plus / minus buttons.
------------
Docking Bay:
------------
You will start play in Docking Bay 001 of Blast Central. Make
sure you DO NOT press fire until the docking bay is clear of
aliens or you will lose energy! When you are ready press fire
and you will disembark the docking bay and begin blasting!
Once you have left the bay you can not re-enter until you
complete the level, or you re-start the game. Press 'S' while
here to enter the Weapons Shop.
---------------
Your Ships PLI:
---------------
After leaving the safety of the docking bay you are on your own.
Your ships superstructure can withstand 100 hits and then your
current ship will be destroyed. This is indicated by the multicolor
GREEN/YELLOW/RED power level indicator (PLI) to the right of the
ship icon. Each alien laser will do an X amount of damage if it
happens to impact with your ship depending on the level you are on.
Of course, if you happen to have grabbed any shield icons your
PLI will remain constant for the duration of the number of shields
you happened to have accumulated.
-------
Bosses:
-------
Bosses are closely related to the smaller aliens of its type.
With 4 major differences. They can take a LOT more damage,
they can dish out a LOT more damage, they are 3 times the size
of the smaller aliens, and if that's not enough, if you run
into them you go bye bye! Each bosses power depends on which
number level you are on. The boss will emerge after all other
smaller aliens have been destroyed. His PLI will also show up
at the bottom of the screen indicating how much energy he has.
When you have destroyed the boss the level will end and you will
advance to the next level for more punishment. Be warned, you
can use blastbombs on bosses for a quick defeat, but you never
know when you might need them later! Also make certain that you
do NOT fly into the boss, hitting him will cause massive damage
to your ship!
---------
PowerUps:
---------
During game play you will run into at least 8 different types
of powerups, they are as follows:
- Bonus: When these appear on the screen grabbing one of them will
increase your score by a random amount between 200 - 1000
times the level number.
- Blastbomb: Will destroy ANY aliens (including bosses!) left
in the starfield and send you to do battle with
the end-of-level boss, (oh goody!) They are
cumulative (add up) over levels. Only TWO blast-
bombs may be used per level, this only makes sense,
one for aliens, one for the boss...if you have any!
They are worth 100 times the level number. Maximum
blastbombs are 99. (Will show little blastbomb
launching from ship)
- Shields: These are automatically activated when picked up. Each
shield will take upto 5 hits of damage before depleting
its energy. The shields are also cumulative over levels.
They are worth 75 times the level number. Maximum shields
are 99.
- Laser: When you start the game you start with a laser power of
1. If you manage to grab a lasergun icon, your laser power
will be increased by 1 to a maximum of 9. This is indicated
by the BLUE power level indicator (PLI) to the right of the
lasergun icon. If you lose a ship during an alien battle
your laser power will be reset to 1. (oh well) They are
worth 50 times the level number. (see damage table below)
- Energy: My favorite is the little energy icons that give your
ship its life power. Grabbing one of these will increase
your ships (PLI) by 10-50 to a max of 99. They are worth
25 times the level number.
- Extra lives: This little treasure will increase your ships reserves
by 1. Grabbing them also increases your score by 250
points times the level number.
- Missile Probes: These little buggers are far and few between, but
if you manage to snag either the left or right one,
your fire power will increase with an arsenal of
micro-missiles at your disposal. They last as long
as you can manage to keep your current ship. They
are worth 150 times the level number. The missiles
they fire will increase total damage by 1 to ALL
the aliens you hit. (see damage table below)

Hints about playing:
--------------------
- Avoid moving to close to groups of aliens. Even though their
ships are harmless themselves, their weapons are not and come
very unexpectedly sometimes. Above all keep your distance and
blast away.
- The aliens themselves become more powerful as levels increase
so try to grab as many Laser and Shield powerups as possible
without losing any ships. Seems impossible, but believe me it
CAN be done. Aliens themselves cause NO damage to you when
you hit them, it's their lasers you gots to look out for!
- Save your Blastbombs for higher more difficult levels and
bosses.
- Remember your shields are limited to 5 hits NO MORE! if your
lives indicator reads '0' and your shields are ready to give
out, say goodbye galaxy.
- After using a Blastbomb if there are any powerups left in space
make sure to grab them before you go fight the boss. You may or
may not have time to do this.
- Blast bombs have effect on bosses too so save them for more
difficult levels and bosses.
- Never run into a boss, period! (Game over man!)
- Many of the powerups come far and few between as you reach higher
and more difficult levels so grab as many as you can on the easier
levels.
- As I mentioned above moving to close to the aliens battle line
WILL make them quite edgy and they will increase their attack
speed. Be careful, this is the one thing you shouldn't do on many
occasions. The one exception is bosses, they move at a constant
speed.
- DO NOT get yourself in front of a boss to fire, even though it
is possible to squeeze in between his fire, one wrong move and
you could be space dust.
- When you lose a ship the bombs and shields you have collected
will not be lost, however your laser power will automatically
reset to level 1.
- If you could ever get 9x laserpower and BOTH Missile probes
(and stay alive long enough) you could wreak some SERIOUS
damage!
- Have fun and don't get blown away too many times.
