VERSE SEARCH
Purpose:
Verse Search is similar to the well-known word search paper and
pencil puzzles. In Verse Search a Bible verse or phrase is hidden in a
field of random letters. The user must discover the hidden phrase. An
example of how the letters of a typical Bible verse or phrase are connect-
ed can be seen below. Here we have a random display of letters, in which
is hidden a portion of Mark 1:15, "Repent ye, and believe the gospel":
*
O E Q D D R H U O E Q D R V N L D R H U O E Q D R V N L
T V L E E L X H T V L S D E E N E L X H T V L S D E E N

S J F Z Z M S J S J F H D N I O Z M S J S J F H D N I O
G W B A A X S O G W B B E A E Y A X S O G W B B E A E Y
T V L E E L X H T V L S D E E N E L X H T V L S D E E N
The phrase, "Repent ye, and believe the gospel" is hidden in
the following fashion, starting with the letter "R" ÄÄÄ¿ in the above
example. ³

Requirements:
Verse Search requires an IBM PC or 100% compatible with a color
graphics monitor and adapter card, and runs on systems using DOS 3.0 or
higher.
To begin:
At the DOS ">" prompt, type ----> VSEARCH then press [ENTER].
The program will load and execute automatically.
Option:
Using Verse Search with a mouse is easier than using the cursor
control keys. If a mouse is detected by the program, Verse Search will
use it. But if for some reason the user would prefer not to use the
mouse (and his system has a mouse active), then the mouse can be ignored
by typing ----> VSEARCH NOMOUSE then press [ENTER] at the DOS prompt to
start the program.
Players:
After an opening title screen, the user will be asked to
specify the number of participants playing. The maximum number of
participants is nine.
Category selection:
The next prompt will ask the user to specify whether the random
Bible verses and phrases will come from the Old Testament, The New
Testament, or from both Testaments.
Screen or Printout:
Next, Verse Search will prompt the user to make a selection as to
whether they wish to find the Bible verse or phrase from the screen, or
from a printout. The user must have a printer attached to their computer,
and it must be on-line if they decide on the printout option.
If the user selects the "Screen" option, then shortly thereafter a
screen will display with a Bible verse or phrase hidden in a random array
of letters.
The Bible reference to the verse/phrase will be located at the
top left corner of this screen. The very first letter of the hidden
verse/phrase will blink three times, and then remain highlighted. The
user is given the first letter of each verse/phrase free. At this point,
the challenge begins.
Cursor movement:
To uncover the hidden verse/phrase, the user must start with the
first letter of the verse/phrase (which the computer has by this time
revealed) and use the cursor control keys to mark each letter that follows.
The cursor control keys are the arrow keys, along with the HOME, PG UP,
PG DN, and END keys (which are located to the right end of your keyboard).
Make sure that the NUM LOCK is turned OFF before continuing.
Each successful move to a letter causes that letter to change
colors and add 10 points to the user's tally. Each incorrect move will
cause a error signal to emit, and a reduction of the user's score by 10
points. In addition, an incorrect move will cause a brief hint to flash
at the top middle of the screen. An arrow indicator will flash briefly
giving the user a clue as to where the correct letter is located, in
respect to the current letter location. This brief hint also flashes
after a period of no user input, as a result of the program sensing that
the user is puzzled and needs some help.
Mouse support:
Users who have a mouse attached to their PC (and the mouse
is activate) will not be able to use the cursor control keys to move to
the next letter. Instead, you must move your mouse and position the
pointer over the next letter, then press the [LEFT MOUSE BUTTON]. During
menu prompts, the mouse pointer can be used to make a selection, or you
can press the corresponding key. The right button acts as an [ESC] key.
To exit the program:
If during the process of uncovering a verse/phrase the user
decides to leave the program, then simply press the [ESC] key (or for
mice, click the [RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON].
