  6. This text file contains a full description of Exile II: Crystal Souls and 
  7. some troubleshooting information. If you have trouble installing or 
  8. playing Exile II: Crystal Souls, look below.

  15. Spiderweb Software presents Exile II: Crystal Souls, the sequel to the 
  16. shareware fantasy role-playing hit Exile: Escape From the Pit!

  18. Exile II: Crystal Souls is a huge, highly detailed shareware fantasy 
  19. role-playing game for Windows 3.1 and 95! Although Exile II is a sequel to 
  20. Exile, it is designed to be completely playable as a stand-alone game, with 
  21. absolutely no experience with Exile required.

  23. Exile II features a simple, elegant interface, a deep, fascinating game 
  24. system, and excellent graphics and sounds. Explore over a hundred 
  25. towns and dungeon levels, meet scads of characters, and fulfill many 
  26. missions, some tiny, some enormous, as you attempt to complete one 
  27. (or all) of several game-winning quests. Complete the game in one way, 
  28. or several!

  30. And, if enough adventures for three full games isnÆt enough, Exile II: 
  31. Crystal Souls has an intricate plot, full of twists, turns, and the 
  32. fates of three nations colliding in the subterranean nation you call 
  33. home. It truly promises all the game you could want, and then some!

  35. The story:
  36.     The surface world is ruled by the Empire. ThatÆs what itÆs 
  37. called - simply the Empire. What need is there for fancy names when 
  38. thereÆs only one game in town?
  39.  
  40.     For many years, the Empire dealt with its misfits, its loudmouths, 
  41. its petty criminals in one way: it teleported them down into Exile, a 
  42. network of enormous caverns and twisty tunnels stretching for hundreds of 
  43. miles under the surface of the Earth. There, the banished humans fought, 
  44. worked, and struggled to survive.

  46.     Then they struck back. With the help of several banished wizards, 
  47. they assassinated the emperor of the Empire. In return, the Empire 
  48. invaded Exile, teleporting down a massive army of well-trained soldiers 
  49. and mages. These troops are now marching through your homeland, destroying 
  50. everyone and everything they find.

  52.     If something isnÆt done, you are all doomed. The question is, 
  53. will someone step forward who is smart enough, strong enough, and just 
  54. plain good enough to stop the forces decimating your land?

  56. Exile II: Crystal Souls is $25 shareware. It requires Windows 3.1 or 95, 
  57. 2 MB free RAM, 256 colors, and a 13" monitor. The author is a member of 
  58. the Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP). Exile II is compatible 
  59. with Windows 95.

  67. TROUBLESHOOTING:
  68.  
  69. The information below should solve many of your problems installing
  70. or running Exile II: Crystal Souls...
  71.  
  72. Question:  Exile II: Crystal Souls refuses to install!
  73. Answer: First, make sure you have ten megabytes of free space on the 
  74. drive you're trying to install too (the game takes up 7, but the 
  75. installer needs a little extra space). Then reboot, make sure no other 
  76. programs are running, and try installing Exile II again. If this 
  77. doesn't work, contact SpidWeb@aol.com.

  79. Question:  Exile II crashes sometimes for no reason!
  80. Answer: Several steps to try, which will eliminate most problems.
  81. 1. Select Preferences from the Options menu. Select Fewer Sounds. If 
  82. this doesn't help, turn off sounds. This will fix most problems.
  83. 2. Run Exile II with no other programs running.
  84. 3. Make sure you have 2.5 megabytes of free RAM.

  86. Question:  I get crashes when targeting a spell or missile, and nothing 
  87. helps!
  88. Answer: Select Preferences from the Options menu. Select No Targeting
  89. Line.

  91. Question:  The Exile II screen is really tiny!
  92. Answer: Go into Windows preferences, and select a monitor mode with a 
  93. different resolution. 640x480 is recommended.

  95. Question: The Exile II screen colors are all bizarre!
  96. Answer:  You need to play Exile II in 256 color mode. Run Exile II, hit F1 
  97. (for help), and read the section on how to get 256 colors on your screen.
  98.  
  99. Question: When I run Exile II, the colors of all my other running programs 
  100. get strange!
  101. Answer:  This is an unavoidable side effect of the way Windows handles 
  102. color palettes. Exile II requires control of all 256 available colors. If 
  103. the color change makes the other program unusable, don't use it while 
  104. playing Exile II.
  105.  
  106. Question:  OK. I installed the game. It runs fine. It looks fine. But I
  107. keep starving, if the monsters don't kill me first, and I don't have any 
  108. gold!
  109. Answer:  Read the Hints For Getting Started section near the end of the 
  110. manual (hit F1 to get the manual).
