==========
DBSCHESS is a chess game and analysis recording program written using
Borland's Delphi system to run under Windows. I hope that you have virus
checked this software - it's in my interest as well as yours! (I don't want
to be blamed in error if you have something nasty on your machine).
This is a Shareware program, please try it out for up to 30 days before
either
i) Registering the program
or
ii) Deleting it from your computer.
Any comments on the program would be gratefully received. Please send by
snail mail to
D B Sugden
Rosedale, Bluntisham Rd.
Colne, Huntingdon
Cambs PE17 3LY
U.K.
or by e-mail to dbsugden@clara.net
The software is believed to be virus free and suitable for the purpose as
described in this and other documentation (in particular the Help file).
However, no liability is accepted by the author for any consequential
damage to your computer system and (in particular) your pride if it does not
help your chess results!
To put it more formally :-
DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTY
THIS SOFTWARE AND MANUAL ARE SOLD "AS IS" AND WITHOUT
WARRANTIES AS TO PERFORMANCE OF MERCHANTABILITY OR ANY
OTHER WARRANTIES WHETHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED. BECAUSE
OF THE VARIOUS HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE ENVIRONMENTS INTO
WHICH THIS PROGRAM MAY BE PUT, NO WARRANTY OF FITNESS FOR
A PARTICULAR PURPOSE IS OFFERED. GOOD DATA PROCESSING
PROCEDURE DICTATES THAT ANY PROGRAM BE THOROUGHLY TESTED
WITH NON-CRITICAL DATA BEFORE RELYING ON IT. THE USER
MUST ASSUME THE ENTIRE RISK OF USING THE PROGRAM. ANY
LIABILITY OF THE SELLER WILL BE LIMITED EXCLUSIVELY TO
PRODUCT REPLACEMENT OR REFUND OF PURCHASE PRICE.
The program and associated data files appear in a self inflating file
DBSZIP.EXE (when run, this program expands itself into all the program and
data files for the DBSCHESS system). There is a "cheap & cheerful" DOS
batch file INSTALL.BAT needing 2 parameters on the floppy disc if you
obtained it by that route
A:INSTALL x: y
where x: is the name of the drive (e.g. C:) and y is the name of the top
level directory (e.g. DBSCHESS) to install it into.
If you obtained the software by downloading the software via a modem, you
will only have the DBSZIP.EXE file. (From some sources this may instead be
a file DBSnna.ZIP where "nna" is a version number, in which case you must
unzip it with PKUNZIP or similar - using the same parameters -D and -N).
Hopefully you will have followed the instructions to create a new directory,
e.g. C:\DBSCHESS, CD to it and run DBSZIP with the -D option. If you are
reading this only after unzipping without the -D option you will have lost
the directory structure and overwritten the choice of bitmaps files that
give different coloured boards! (in which case simply do it again with the
-D -N options).
E.g. CD \
MD DBSCHESS
CD DBSCHESS
\CSERVE\DOWNLOAD\DBSZIP -D -N
(If you have already set up a previous version, then omit the MD in the
last line of the above example).
Assuming that you installed it to your C: drive in the \DBSCHESS directory,
you would then add it to your chosen Windows group by the New option of
the File menu in the Program Manager.
Give the program file as C:\DBSCHESS\DBSCHESS.EXE
Give the working directory as C:\DBSCHESS
Under Win 95 amend the Settings | Taskbar to create an appropriate shortcut.
With the exception of the changes to your Windows screen as a consequence
of the above paragraphs, the only changes to your system are the introduction
and contents of the \DBSCHESS directory. The "uninstall" is to just delete
\DBSCHESS and all it's contents.
The program requires a minimum configuration of an IBM compatible PC, 386
computer running Windows 3.1. It will run under Windows 95 and NT 4.0.
Please feel free to pass on copies of this program, but only in its
entirety and without alteration in the original compressed issued form.
There is now a 32 bit version as well (see end of this file).
REGISTRATION
============
Registration of this Shareware costs ú12 directly in the UK, or US$20 otherwise.
There are 4 methods of getting this payment to me (please don't experiment with
other methods such as American Express international money order - they cause
a great deal of trouble if they are not in Pounds Sterling.
1) Within the UK, you can register the program by sending a cheque for 12
pounds sterling to the above address. Don't forget your NAME and ADDRESS!
2) By credit card payment in the US via PsL. Please note carefully their
procedure as follows ...
CREDIT CARD ORDERS ONLY -
"You can order with MC, Visa, Amex, or Discover from Public (software) Library
by calling 800-2424-PsL or 713-524-6394 or by FAX to 713-524-6398 or by
Email to 14457@pslweb.com. You can also mail credit card orders to
PsL at P.O.Box 35705, Houston, TX 77235-5705.
"THE ABOVE NUMBERS ARE FOR CREDIT CARD ORDERS ONLY.
"THE AUTHOR OF THIS PROGRAM CANNOT BE REACHED AT THESE NUMBERS.
"Please quote reference #14457 for DBSCHESS.
"Please quote the card number, expiry date and your address.
"Any questions about the status of the shipment of the order, refunds, registration
options, product details, technical support, volume discounts, dealer pricing, site
licenses, non-credit card orders, etc, must be directed to D B Sugden by e-mail to
dbsugden@clara.net.
"To insure that you get the latest version, PsL will notify the author on the day
of your order and he will supply you with details of the latest version and where
it is available (if you do not already possess that version).
3) By online credit card payment in the UK via SoftShop. You can go directly
to the online order form with the URL
http://www.atlantic-coast.com/cgi-bin/sellonline/s004cart.htm
This link is also given on my homepage in the "download the program" page.
I ALSO NEED TO KNOW ...
=====================
the title that you wish to have the program registered as - this should be a
maximum of 20 characters (including spaces) and identify the individual user
of the program. I will contact you with the simple method of converting your
shareware version to a registered one - when I receive your UK cheque or
notification from CompuServe, PsL or SoftShop depending on your method of payment.
Once you have registered, you will no longer see the Shareware reminder and
new features after 2.0 will no longer be restricted.
Future shareware versions of the program will be automatically registered for
your use with no further formalities. I can provide you with a version of the
manual in its original Word format - RTF is also possible. There are odd things
like a keyboard template. You will also have a clear conscience!
DEUTSCHE SPRACHE
=================
Thanks to Martin Hamacher, there is a German language version of the
Help file. If you ...
RENAME DBSCHESS.HLP ENGLISH.HLP
RENAME DEUTSCHE.HLP DBSCHESS.HLP
the Help will appear in German. The latest version of DEUTSCHE.HLP is
available from my homepage.
OTHER BITMAPS
=============
Alan Cowderoy has produced various alternative bitmaps for the chess
pieces. These are available in the same Compuserve library as DBSCHESS.
My thanks to him for his contributions. There is also a link to his Traveller
font in my home page.
HOME PAGE
==========
If you want to see what I look like (when wearing a suit - which is very rare),
you could try ...
http://www.dbsugden.clara.net
There are the latest details about version number, etc. given there. There is a
straight ZIP version of the program there as well - if it's a beta version I'll
make that clear.
INTERNET
========
The latest version may also be found at ...
COMPUSERVE - The Chess - Library #5 - Hardware / Software (This Forum
has continued to accept the latest version after my electronic move).
FTP site :- ftp.math.uni-hamburg.de /pub/misc/morechess/dbschess/
FTP site :- ftp://ftp.pitt.edu /group/chess/UTIL/
homepage :- http://www.dbsugden.clara.net/dbsnnx.zip
At Pittsburg and on my homepage, the "nnx" part of the file refers to the version
number, e.g. DBS19A is version 1.9a. At Compuserve and Univ Hamburg it is held as a
self-expanding DBSZIP.EXE.
My thanks to all the organisations holding the software.
32-bit version
==============
From now on a 32 bit version will also be available on my homepage. The executable
program is called DBSCH32.EXE. This will not run under Win 3.1. The program is compatible
with the 16 bit version data files and can simply be put into the normal \DBSCHESS folder.
Unzip the DBS32nnx.ZIP file with -D -N parameters. E.g. DBS3220.ZIP is version 2.0.
All the best - David.
