  5. Thank you for choosing ACTION CHECKERS. LeMonds Software
  6. hopes that you will enjoy playing the game.

  9. WHAT is ACTION CHECKERS?
  10. ------------------------
  11.  
  12. The ACTION CHECKERS game is similar to the game of checkers,
  13. and is played on a board that is similar to a checkers board.
  14. However, that's where the similarities end! Think that you
  15. can get to the other side of the board? Just wait and see
  16. what happens!
  17.  
  18. The object of the game is to move one of your pieces to the
  19. other side of the board. That's right, just one piece! It
  20. sounds like an easy thing to do, but the going will be rough.
  21. The board is a minefield, and if you move or jump onto a mine,
  22. there goes another one of your pieces. Occasionally pieces are
  23. arrested and put in jail. When trial occurs, the judge is not
  24. usually very lenient. Then, there are the electric fences,
  25. which aren't too good for your pieces either. A player can
  26. also win when his or her opponent runs out of pieces.
  27.  
  28. You can play the computer (with an easy or harder level of
  29. play), or a human opponent. The board layout and colors, and
  30. the various "events" are all easy to customize.

  42. INSTALLING ACTION CHECKERS is EASY
  43. ----------------------------------

  45. The procedure for installing ACTION CHECKERS on your computer
  46. is very straightforward. A setup program is not provided since
  47. manual installation is so simple. In addition, if a setup
  48. program were to be used, then the size of the ZIP file
  49. obtained from an Internet download would be twice as large
  50. as it currently is. Accordingly, the Internet download
  51. proceeds much faster without the setup program.
  52.

  54. ACTION CHECKERS FOLDER
  55. ----------------------
  56.  
  57. The installation instructions assume that ACTION CHECKERS is
  58. to be installed in the following folder:
  59.  
  60.     C:\Program Files\Action Checkers
  61.  
  62. However, you are free to install the program in any new folder
  63. of your choice.
  64.  
  65. ------------------------------------------
  66. INSTALLING ACTION CHECKERS from a ZIP FILE
  67. OBTAINED from an INTERNET DOWNLOAD
  68. ------------------------------------------
  69.  
  70. 1) Unzip (decompress) the ZIP file "ActChkrs.zip" using any
  71.    standard file unzipping software (available on the Internet).
  72.  
  73.    Unzip the ACTION CHECKERS files into the folder
  74.     C:\Program Files\Action Checkers
  75.  
  76.    All the ACTION CHECKERS files should be in one folder.
  77.  
  78. 2) Check to see that the ACTION CHECKERS files which are in your
  79.    new folder "C:\Program Files\Action Checkers" match those
  80.    shown in the "Packing List" below. In order for the program
  81.    to work properly, all of the files shown in the packing list
  82.    must be located in the same folder.
  83.  
  84.    ACTION CHECKERS is essentially installed at this point, and
  85.    is ready to run. However, you probably will want to create a
  86.    shortcut to the ACTION CHECKERS executable on the Start menu
  87.    or on the Desktop, as explained in the next step.
  88.  
  89. 3) You may create a short-cut to the ACTION CHECKERS executable
  90.    in the Windows95 Start menu, enabling you to launch ACTION
  91.    CHECKERS from the Start menu when you wish to use the program.
  92.  
  93.    One way to do this is as follows: Open the folder
  94.     C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
  95.    Then, open the folder
  96.     C:\Program Files\Action Checkers
  97.    Next, left-click on the ACTION CHECKERS executable "BVKT.exe",
  98.    then with the cursor on the highlighted file, right-click and
  99.    while holding the right mouse button, drag the file "BVKT.exe"
  100.    into the other folder (the start menu folder). Next, release
  101.    the right mouse button, and a small menu will pop up.
  102.    Left-click on the "Create Shortcut Here" command in that menu.
  103.    Next, rename the shortcut to "Action Checkers".
  104.  
  105.    Now, in order to run ACTION CHECKERS, simply left-click on the
  106.    Start menu, left-click on Programs, then left-click on the
  107.    "Action Checkers" icon.

  110. INSTALLING ACTION CHECKERS from a 3.5" Diskette
  111. -----------------------------------------------

  113. 1) Insert the 3.5" diskette into your floppy drive (the "A:"
  114.    drive on most machines).
  115.  
  116.    There exists one folder on the floppy, titled "ACTION CHECKERS".
  117.  
  118.    Copy that folder into "C:\Program Files".
  119.  
  120.    ACTION CHECKERS is now installed on your computer.
  121.  
  122. 2) If you would like to create a shortcut to ACTION CHECKERS in
  123.    your Start Menu, follow the instructions in Step 3 above in the
  124.    section "INSTALLING ACTION CHECKERS from a ZIP FILE OBTAINED
  125.    from an INTERNET DOWNLOAD".

  128. HOW to RUN ACTION CHECKERS

  131. You can start ACTION CHECKERS using the shortcut in your Start menu
  132. if you created one. To run ACTION CHECKERS from the Start menu,
  133. left-click Start, then left-click Programs, then left-click
  134. "Action Checkers".
  135.  
  136. You can also run ACTION CHECKERS by double-left-clicking directly
  137. on the icon for the program's executable, 
  138.  
  139.     C:\Program Files\Action Checkers\BVKT.exe
  140.

  142. TROUBLESHOOTING
  143. ---------------

  145. Having trouble running ACTION CHECKERS?
  146.  
  147. Some machines which run older versions of Windows 95
  148. may need an updated copy of the "Oleaut32.dll" file in
  149. order for ACTION CHECKERS to work properly. A copy of this
  150. file is included in the zip file which you downloaded.
  151. If you need this newer file, a message box will
  152. immediately appear when you try to run ACTION CHECKERS.
  153. It will state that the file "Oleaut32.dll" cannot be
  154. found (even if the older version of the DLL is on your
  155. machine). In that case, move the version which comes
  156. with ACTION CHECKERS into your "systems" folder, which on
  157. most machines is "C:\Windows\System". You may want to
  158. make a backup copy of your original version of the DLL
  159. before moving the newer version into your systems folder.
  160.  
  161. NOTE: You should replace your original copy of "Oleaut32.dll"
  162. with the version supplied in the ACTION CHECKERS zip file
  163. only if the one in the zip file is NEWER than the one on
  164. your machine. You can check the version number of a DLL
  165. file by right-clicking on its icon to bring up the "properties"
  166. menu, and selecting the "version" tab in the properties window.
  167. Replace the DLL on your system only if the version number of
  168. the one in the zip file is higher than the version number of
  169. the original one.

  207. LeMonds Software is happy to grant you a limited license to
  208. use the program for a period of up to 15 days in order to
  209. evaluate the program before purchasing it. The shareware
  210. version is a fully functional version of the program, in
  211. which all features are operational. However, the shareware
  212. version of ACTION CHECKERS will run on your computer for only 15
  213. days following installation.

  219. Your shareware copy of ACTION CHECKERS may be registered by

  247. is completely uninstalled from the computer on which it was

  354. WORD BLAST is an educational program designed to help 
  355. children enhance their vocabulary and spelling skills in
  356. a fun computer game setting (adults enjoy the game too).
  357. In WORD BLAST, the player tries to guess a word 
  358. letter-by-letter, as in the game of hangman. When a 
  359. letter is correctly guessed, it is displayed in its 
  360. position(s) in the word. Otherwise, a segment of the 
  361. fuse leading to a bundle of dynamite "burns". If the 
  362. word is completed before 10 incorrect guesses, then the 
  363. player wins the game and receives an audio compliment. 
  364. If not, then the dynamite "explodes". Children rarely 
  365. lose a game since the definition of the word may be 
  366. viewed before the fuse burns completely.
  367.  
  368. The game may be played either in the blast mode 
  369. (described above), or in the vocabulary-builder mode, in 
  370. which the definition of the word is displayed from the
  371. outset. The latter playing mode makes the game easier
  372. for young children, and makes WORD BLAST the ideal 
  373. medium for helping to teach children the meanings of the
  374. words on their weekly vocabulary lists from school.

  376. New words and their definitions may be added in WORD 
  377. BLAST via easy-to-use menus for the creation and editing 
  378. of word lists. In addition, points are awarded when a 
  379. word is correctly identified, and the names of the top

  398. APP LAUNCHER provides a convenient way for organizing and starting up
  399. your programs and for opening the folders and documents which you
  400. frequently need to access. Your applications and documents can be
  401. arranged in categories, each of which contains fifty buttons.
  402. Each button can be used to launch a particular program or file, and
  403. displays the icon of the application or file associated with it.
  404. The result is a computer desktop which is free of clutter.
  405. APP LAUNCHER is very well behaved: you can drag and drop files or
  406. the shortcuts to them onto the buttons, but cannot accidentally drag
  407. them off; they must be explicitly removed in a button deletion mode.

  428. GOOD RIDDANCE is a convenient, easy-to-use, and FREE file deletion
  429. utility.
  430.  
  431. Use it to quickly clear the contents of various folders on your
  432. hard drive, such as the caches which contain files downloaded
  433. during Internet sessions (these files can number in the hundreds
  434. or thousands and can occupy a lot of disk space). Deletion Sets
  435. may be defined -- these are simply groups of folders which are to
  436. be cleared. Select a deletion set, and clear its contents at the
  437. press of a button (the folders are retained, the files in them are
  438. deleted). Folders on your drives are displayed in a tree list, and
  439. are color-coded red, green, or blue. Green folders can be cleared,
  440. red ones cannot be (they may be changed to green in the future),
  441. and blue folders cannot be cleared (they cannot be changed to green).
  442. Two opportunities to abort the file deletion process when clearing
  443. folders are given, and the files which will be deleted may be
  444. displayed before the deletion occurs. The user may also specify a
  445. list of file extensions , and files which use those extensions will
  446. not be deleted during the folder clearing process.

  448. GOOD RIDDANCE is a file deletion utility, and as such, there exists a
  449. probability that mistakes can be made by the user which may result in
  450. the unwanted deletion of files. However, various safeguards have been
  451. implemented within the GOOD RIDDANCE program to minimize the
  452. probability that this might happen.  Please read about these
  453. safeguards in the program's help facility before using the program.
