  38. In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
  39.   A stately pleasure dome decree:
  40. Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
  41. Through caverns measureless to man
  42.   Down to a sunless sea.
  43. So twice five miles of fertile ground
  44. With walls and towers were girdled
  45.        round:
  46. And here were gardens bright with
  47.        sensuous rills
  48. Where blossomed many an incense-
  49.        bearing tree;
  50. And here were forests ancient as the
  51.        hills,
  52. Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.
  53. But oh! that deep romantic chasm
  54.        which slanted
  55. Down the green hill athwart a cedarn
  56.        cover!
  57. A savage place! as holy and enchanted
  58. As e'er beneath a waning moon was
  59.        haunted
  60. By woman wailing for her demon-lover!
  61. And from this chasm, with ceaseless
  62.        turmoil seething,
  63. As if this earth in fast thick pants
  64.        were breathing,
  65. A mighty fountain momently was
  66.        forced,
  67. Amid whose swift half-intermitted
  68.        burst
  69. Huge fragments vaulted like
  70.        rebounding hail,
  71. Or chaffy grain beneath the
  72.        thresher's flail:
  73. And 'mid these dancing rocks at once
  74.        and ever
  75. It flung up momently the sacred
  76.        river.
  77. Five miles meandering with a mazy
  78.        motion
  79. Through wood and dale the sacred
  80.        river ran,
  81. Then reached the caverns measureless
  82.        to man,
  83. And sank in tumult to a lifeless
  84.        ocean:
  85. And 'mid this tumult Kubla heard from
  86.        far
  87. Ancestral voices prophesying war!

  89.   The shadow of the dome of pleasure
  90.   Floated midway on the waves;
  91.   Where was heard the mingled measure
  92.   From the fountain and the caves.
  93. It was a miracle of rare device,
  94. A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of
  95.        ice!
  96.   A damsel with a dulcimer
  97.   In a vision once I saw:
  98.   It was an Abyssinian maid,
  99.   And on her dulcimer she played,
  100.   Singing of Mount Abora.
  101.   Could I revive within me
  102.   Her symphony and song,
  103.   To such a deep delight 'twould win
  104.        me,
  105. That with music loud and long
  106. I would build that dome in air,
  107. That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
  108. And all who heard should see them
  109.        there,
  110. And all should cry, Beware! Beware!

  112. Weave a circle 'round him thrice,
  113. And close your eyes with holy dread,
  114. For he on honey-dew hath fed,
