Politics and History
French capture Rome and declare the
Roman Republic. Pope Pius IV leaves
for Valence. The French also annex
left bank of Rhine, seize Malta,
occupy Alexandria and Egypt, and win
the Battle of the Pyramids, making
France the master of Egypt. However,
the French are stonewalled in Ireland
and Nelson maintains British naval
supremacy by destroying a French
fleet in Abukir Bay. King Ferdinand
IV of Naples declares war on Napoleon
and enters Rome; the French retake
the city and overrun Naples in
retaliation.
The British introduce a 10 percent
income tax on all incomes over \200
as a war time measure; meanwhile the
Irish begin a mass emigration to
Canada.
Last King of Poland dies (b. 1732),
Augustus Stanislas II.
