Kubla, or Kublai, Khan, b. c. 1215
and d. c. Feb 1294, was a grandson
of the ruthless conqueror Genghis
Khan. He established the Yuan dynasty
.lndemo1ba
and led the Mongol Empire to its
peak. Although he became great khan
in 1260, it was several years before
he consolidated control over the
eastern Mongol territories.
In 1279, Kubla conquered the Sung
dynasty and subsequently directed
military expeditions on much of what
is now Indochina and Indonesia. His
only major military misstep was an
abortive attack on Japan in 1274, and
again in 1281. Both were sunk by
typhoons. Despite his forays into the
east, Kubla prudently made no attempt
to extend his western boundary into
other territories, which were ruled
by Genghis' other descendants.
Kubla Khan moved his capital from
Karakorum to Peking (Beijing), where
.lndemo1bb
he was visited by explorer Marco Polo
and other foreign dignitaries. A wise
man, he was initially educated by
Confucianist scholars, although he
later converted to Buddhism. His
unique shamanist form of the religion
turned into the sect which today is
called Mongolian Lamaism.
