  8. Kubla, or Kublai, Khan, b. c. 1215
  9. and d. c. Feb 1294, was a grandson
  10. of the ruthless conqueror Genghis
  11. Khan. He established the Yuan dynasty
  12. .lndemo1ba
  13. and led the Mongol Empire to its
  14. peak. Although he became great khan
  15. in 1260, it was several years before
  16. he consolidated control over the
  17. eastern Mongol territories.
  18.    In 1279, Kubla conquered the Sung
  19. dynasty and subsequently directed
  20. military expeditions on much of what
  21. is now Indochina and Indonesia. His
  22. only major military misstep was an
  23. abortive attack on Japan in 1274, and
  24. again in 1281. Both were sunk by
  25. typhoons. Despite his forays into the
  26. east, Kubla prudently made no attempt
  27. to extend his western boundary into
  28. other territories, which were ruled
  29. by Genghis' other descendants.
  30.    Kubla Khan moved his capital from
  31. Karakorum to Peking (Beijing), where
  32. .lndemo1bb
  33. he was visited by explorer Marco Polo
  34. and other foreign dignitaries. A wise
  35. man, he was initially educated by
  36. Confucianist scholars, although he
  37. later converted to Buddhism. His
  38. unique shamanist form of the religion
  39. turned into the sect which today is
  40. called Mongolian Lamaism.
