PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE¢ by Jack Gedalius¢¢¢ January--March, 2000¢¢¢¢ Since the last newsletter we have two¢ deaths to report. ¢¢ We lost our indispensible disk¢ librarian, Harold Pegler, on Monday,¢ February 28th. The funeral was the¢ next day. He was a commanmander of¢ the Jewish War Veterans. Twenty-two¢ war vetererans attended the funeral¢ and, according to tradition, saluted¢ his flag-draped coffin. One of his¢ daughters is a doctor and the other a¢ dentist whom we all met. He was an¢ engineer for Bell Labs after World¢ War II.¢¢ Harold was a member of our club for¢ ten years. We always enjoyed his and¢ his wife's, Edith, company at our¢ social gatherings. Harold reviewed¢ and catalogued over 700 disks for our¢ library. He, even, set up the¢ refreshments for each meeting. ¢ Harold increased the memory of the¢ Atari computers for the members who¢ needed assistance to accomplish¢ this.¢ ¢ Our sympathies are extended to the¢ Pegler family.¢¢ Our member, Alan Sharkis, lost his¢ father-in-law, on February 29th. ¢ Funeral services were held graveside¢ in Westwood, New Jersey on March 2nd. ¢ Our condolences are extended to his¢ wife, Ann and the entire Sharkis¢ family. ¢¢ We are also sorry to report that one¢ of our founding members, Jerome¢ Ginsberg, is also very ill. He has¢ been a member since the end of 1985. ¢ We pray for his speedy and complete¢ recovery. ¢¢ At the January meeting Ron Fetzer¢ demoed the ABBUC yearly disk '99¢ which consisted of a game, Sea¢ Fighter, instructions how to convert¢ your Atari into a stereo player by¢ using two Pokey chips, and textfile¢ explaining how to convert different¢ Ascii codes between Atari and PCs so¢ that the files would work together. ¢¢¢ Ron demoed another ABBUC disk no.26¢ which works in a similar manner to PC¢ Windows. It consists of icons and¢ drop-down menues. The cursor is a¢ pointer. The disk also had a¢ shooting game, Mad Butcher. ¢¢ We discussed the upcoming Valentine's¢ Day at Lambrou's on February 4th. ¢ The dinner was enjoyable and joyous¢ for all. Members and their wives¢ attended the sumptuous dinner. ¢¢ At the February meeting there was a¢ general discusion of PCs and Atari's¢ and new advancements in the field of¢ communication. ¢¢ At the March meeting I showed a video¢ tape of last summer's barbecue and of¢ of the last Valentine's Day dinner at¢ Lambrou's restaurant. ¢ ¢ I, then, showed a disk of some of the¢ upcoming programs that will be¢ incorporated in this present disk.¢ The first program is ROMAN NUMBERS¢ which converts Arabic Numbers into¢ Roman Numbers and vice versa. ¢ The next program is DAYS OLD. This¢ will calculate your age in days,¢ years, and will indicate your¢ horoscope sign. It,also, calculates¢ the number of days between two dates.¢ I find that it can calculate the¢ number of days between when a CD or¢ bond is issued and when it matures.¢ In the program CALENDAR one enters¢ the month and the year. The whole¢ calendar month appears on the screen.¢ This can be done from the sixteenth¢ century to infinity. ¢ The last program that I demoed is¢ INTEREST. One can calculate the¢ amount of interest earned when a CD¢ is due. I find the program accurate¢ and helpful. ¢ ¢ BYE FOR NOW ¢ ¢ ¢ JACK GEDALIUS¢ ¢
