  1. Setup Instructions for Microsoft Word Viewer 97
  2.  
  3. System Requirements for the use of Microsoft Word Viewer 97
  4.  -  A personal computer with a 486 or higher processor
  5.  -  Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 95 operating system or Microsoft Windows NT(R)
  6.     Workstation operating system 3.51 or later
  7.  -  4 MB of memory for Windows 95 (8 MB recommended)
  8.  -  12 MB of memory for Windows NT Workstation
  9.  -  7 MB of hard disk space (9MB free for installation only)
  10.  -  VGA or higher-resolution video adapter
  11.  -  Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
  12.  
  13. Installation of Word Viewer 97 is designed to take place from within Microsoft
  14. Windows. If Windows is not running, please start it before continuing.
  15.  
  16. Make sure that all programs are closed, and make sure you are not running any
  17. utilities or virus protection before proceeding.

  19. To install Word Viewer, please follow these instructions:
  20.  
  21. 1. Your starting point for Word Viewer 97 installation depends upon whether you download 
  22. the Viewer.exe file from the Microsoft Web site or an online service, or receive it on disks.
  23.  
  24. (a) If you download Viewer.exe and choose to run it, the file will unpack itself and start 
  25. the Word Viewer 97 Setup program. You can also save the file to a local folder and run 
  26. Viewer.exe later. However, this folder cannot be the location into which you plan to install
  27. Word Viewer.

  29. (b) If you receive Word Viewer on disks, insert the disk labeled as disk 1 into your floppy 
  30. drive. On the Start menu click "Run" (Program Manager, File menu on Windows NT 3.51). Type 
  31. "a:setup".

  34. 2.  Word Viewer 97 Setup will prompt you for a folder in which to install
  35.     Word Viewer. The default folder location for Word Viewer is:

  37.     C:\PROGRAM FILES\WORDVIEW ("C:\WordView" on Windows NT 3.51)
  38.  
  39. 3.  Click "Install" to install Word Viewer 97.
  40.  
  41. 4.  If Word Viewer Setup detects Word version 6.x or later on your system, Setup 
  42.     will prompt you to determine which application should open Word documents by 
  43.     default. The default application is used to open files with .doc file extensions 
  44.     when they are double-clicked in Windows 95.
  45.  
  46.     - Choosing "Open with Word" means that Word for Windows will be used
  47.       by default to open Word files.
  48.  
  49.     - Choosing "Open with Viewer" means that Word Viewer will be used by
  50.       default to open Word files.
  51.  
  52. NOTE:   If you select the "Open with Word" option and you want to restore Word as the 
  53. default Word document handler, you will have to uninstall Word Viewer and then start 
  54. Word so that it can restore its Registry information. For more information see 
  55. "Installation and Maintenance" in the Word Viewer 97 Readme.doc.

  93. 6.  On the Windows 95 taskbar, click Start to run Word Viewer 97 in Windows 95, 
  94.     then point to Programs and click Microsoft Word Viewer. Alternatively, in the
  95.     \PROGRAM FILES\WORDVIEW folder, double-click the WORDVIEW.EXE file. Or in 
  96.     Windows NT Program Manager, double-click the Word Viewer icon.

  98. After Word Viewer 97 Setup is complete, Viewer.exe deletes the files used for
  99. Setup. If you plan to distribute Word Viewer 97, either online or on disks, 
  100. you will need W95VW97.EXE or the files it unpacks. See "Distribution of
  101. Word Viewer" in the Word Viewer 97 Readme.doc for more information.

  103. For additional information on using Word Viewer 97, see Readme.doc located
  104. in the same directory as Word Viewer. To view this file, run Word Viewer 97.
  105. In the "Open" dialog box, click Readme.doc, and click OK. If The "Open" dialog box is
  106. not pointing to your WORDVIEW folder when you start Word Viewer, change to that
  107. folder and open Readme.doc.
