PC Checkup could not find a CD-ROM drive because you either don't have one, or the drive you have could not be located on the system for some reason.
PC Checkup was unable to access your CD-ROM drive. Either PC Checkup was not able to find the drive, or it was unable to read the CD in the drive.
PC Checkup was unable to find the specified device in your machine. You either don't have the appropriate hardware (such as a sound card), or the appropriate driver installed (such as QuickTime).
We attempted to play some sounds on your system, however you were not able to hear the sound.
We attempted to play a video on your system, but for some reason it didn't play correctly.\n\nYour video or sound may be jerky.\n\nYou may see the video, but no sound played.\n\nThe picture quality of the video may be poor.
The way Windows accesses your file system can be adjusted to improve your multimedia performance.
An unexpected multimedia problem was encountered. The error string should list the problem that was encountered. Refer to your Windows manual or run the Multimedia troubleshooter for additional help.
We looked for an association for the given device type, but were either unable to find one, or the association is invalid.
Run the Add Hardware wizard to add the device.
Check CD-ROM connection status.
Place a valid CD-ROM disk into the CD-ROM drive.
Your video quality is poor because you are probably using a 16 color palette.
Your video is fine, but there was no sound.
Your video quality is poor because your video and/or audio stutters or skips when playing.
Optimize the file system for multimedia applications.
Run the multimedia control panel applet to modify your multimedia configuration.
Adjust the volume.
Check the cable connections to your speakers.
Run the Add Software Wizard to install a multimedia player.
If you have an external CD-ROM drive, make sure that it is plugged in and you have turned it on. Be sure that you have connected the drive to the computer. Refer to your CD-ROM drive manual for connection instructions.\nIf you have an internal drive, make sure the power connection plug is securely inserted into the power socket on the drive. Also check that the data cable (a flat ribbon cable) is securely connected to the drive. Refer to your CD-ROM manual for connection instructions.
You can run the Add Hardware Wizard to allow Windows to install the appropriate driver for you. Refer to Windows Help for specific instructions on running the wizard.
You may have attempted the CD-ROM test without inserting a valid CD-ROM disk into the CD-ROM drive. If your CD-ROM drive uses a caddy, make sure you closed the caddy correctly, and inserted the caddy into the drive. Be sure to place the CD-ROM in the drive label side up.\nIf your CD-ROM drive loads the CD on a tray (like a traditional audio CD player), be sure you placed the CD in the drive label side up.
This solution will display a dialog that will show you some common problems and solutions to video problems.
This will optimize your file system to run multimedia applications.
The multimedia control panel application will allow you to modifiy your multimedia settings for Audio (Wave), Video (AVI), MIDI, CD Music, and other advanced settings. You can set your preferred devices for audio playback and recording, and install or remove various devices.
Adjusting the sound volume to a higher level may allow you to hear the sound.
You should check your cabling to verify that your sound equipment is plugged in, and plugged in correctly.
To play the appropriate multimedia file, you should install a player for it. For instance, Windows does not provide a player for MPEG or QuickTime files. Acquire the appropriate software, and then run the Add Software Wizard to help you install it.
Press the eject button on the CD-ROM drive.
If the CD-ROM drive uses a CD caddy, open the caddy and place the CD into the caddy label side up. Insert the caddy into the CD-ROM drive gently.
If the CD-ROM drive uses a tray (like a typical audio CD player), place the CD gently onto the tray label side up. Press the Eject button again to slide the caddy back into the drive.
Make sure the CD is clean. Windows may have trouble reading the CD if it is dirty, scratched or otherwise damaged.
If your CD-ROM drive is external, make sure it is plugged in and turned on. Be sure the data cable is connected properly.
If your CD-ROM drive is internal, be sure the power cable and data cable are connected properly.
Refer to your CD-ROM drive and computer manual for cable connection instructions
Change your color palette to at least 256 colors by:
Go to Control Panels, double click the Display icon, and choose the settings tab.
You may need to change your video driver. Click the "Change Display Type" button. Choose a video driver that matches your video card.\n\nThe OSR 2 release of Windows 95 (or Windows 95 B) may call this button "Advanced Properties". Click that button, then click the "Change" button. Then choose a video driver that matches your video card.
Your color palette may be set to less than 256 colors. In the same settings tab, check that the "Color palette" combo box says "256 colors", "High Color (16 bit)", or "True Color". In reality, just make sure it doesn't say "16 Colors".
Video and audio require quite a bit of computing memory and power. Your system may not be up the task because you don't have a lot of physical memory available to play the video, or your CPU may be older.
You can increase the amount of memory in your PC, increase the CPU power, or install a graphic accelerator.
You can always increase video performance off of your CD-ROM drive by upgrading a six speed CD-ROM or better.
Make sure you have the latest video driver from your video card manufacturer. You can call the manufacturer, or go visit their web site on the internet, where you can typically download the drivers you need.
Run the advanced multimedia tests again, and fix any WAVE problems that are found.
Check to see if your speaker's power is turned on. However, some speakers may not be powered externally, and may not have a power switch.
If your speakers are powered on, make sure the volume is turned up. Again, some speakers may not have volume controls.
Some older sound cards (like the older SoundBlaster cards), may have a volume control right on the sound card. Look at the back of your computer, and look where the cables to your speakers are connected. If there is a knob you can turn there, it is likely the volume knob. Try turning this knob while you play sounds.
Run SNDVOL32.EXE and make sure the master volume is set high enough.
Make sure your speakers are plugged in and turned on.
Make sure there is an audio cable plugged into your speakers, and to your sound card on the back of your PC.
To verify that your sound cables are plugged in properly, unplug each end (remember where you unplugged it from!), and check the connector. It should look like a connector for a set of headphones on your walkman. If the connector matches, you have found the audio cable.
Verify that the end that is plugged into your sound card is plugged into the right socket. Many sound cards will lable the appropriate socket for audio out as "Spkr Out". If your sound card also lists a "Line Out", and your speaker is powered, plug it in there.
Verify that the left and right speakers are connected together. Many speakers will have only one plug connect to the sound card, the other to one of the speakers. The other speaker is then connected to the first speaker. You can tell if this is the case if only one speaker has a power connection.
If your speakers do not have a power cable, they might be battery powered. If they are, make sure the batteries are fresh.
If you are having trouble finding the audio connection on your PC, you may not have a separate sound card installed. Instead, the sound card may be built in. Look near where the mouse and keyboard are plugged in for the appropriate connection.
