  12. This is the Readme.Txt file for PowerDesk Utilities 98 Evaluation
  13. Version 3.03.

  15. Note the 30-day trial version is freely available. After thirty
  16. days if you like the program you can purchase it from the 
  17. Mijenix Corporation (http://www.mijenix.com/), or your local
  18. computer software store.

  22. PowerDesk Utilities 98 is the latest iteration in PowerDesk's
  23. long and award-winning history.  PowerDesk Utilities 98 is a
  24. complete, fully integrated utility set for Windows 95, 98 and
  25. NT. Over 300 power features are included in it, including 
  26. zip/unzip, file viewing, advanced file finding, encryption/
  27. decryption, email attachment decoding, hard drive space management,
  28. advanced file tracking and quicker access to programs. By
  29. integrating hundreds of dollars worth of utilities into a single,
  30. $39.95 package, PowerDesk Utilities 98 adds a quantum measure
  31. of functionality and ease to Windows. Each feature is optional,
  32. and users can pick and choose the ones that suit their needs:

  34. **Easier and faster file management with PowerDesk 98** 
  35. At the heart of the PowerDesk Utilities 98 is PowerDesk, a 
  36. supercharged file manager that optionally replaces or 
  37. supplements the Windows Explorer and is the central access 
  38. point for PowerDesk's various functions. As it uses the 
  39. standard Windows Explorer metaphor, it is familiar, and 
  40. doesn't try to "fight" the way people work.
  41. Much of PowerDesk Utilities functionality can also be 
  42. accessed in the Windows Explorer through context-menus, 
  43. or through stand-alone programs.

  45. **Multiple views for fast drag-and-drop**
  46. PowerDesk has the unique ability to allow users to see 
  47. multiple drive or directory views (panes) to easily move 
  48. and copy files from one location to another. Only 
  49. PowerDesk offers this feature.

  51. **Powerful and integrated zip/unzip capabilities**
  52. With the power of a stand-alone zip utility, 
  53. PowerDesk's fully integrated zip file manager supports 
  54. every major compression format, including PK-ZIP, ARJ, 
  55. ARC, LZH, Z, GZ, ZOO, TAR and RAR. It provides automatic 
  56. spanning of large compressed files over multiple disks, 
  57. zip file repair, password protection for zip files and 
  58. multiple compression rates.

  60. By adding Mijenix's ZipMagic, users get the added 
  61. capability of using zip files without having to unzip 
  62. them first.

  64. **Views over 80 types of files**
  65. Integrated into PowerDesk are robust file 
  66. viewers with support for over 80 file formats. Uniquely, 
  67. files can be viewed in a separate preview window as 
  68. users browse through files, without needing to launch 
  69. a viewer program or load a separate application.

  71. **Easier file finding**
  72. Fully integrated into Windows, the PowerDesk File 
  73. Finder adds several key features which are not in the 
  74. standard File Finder: Search on multiple drives, print 
  75. or view search results, and use advanced "Boolean" 
  76. functions to exactly narrow a search.

  78. **Comprehensive graphics file conversion**
  79. PowerDesk can convert graphics files from any 
  80. of 24 graphics formats to the format of the user's choice, 
  81. and it can even perform "batch" conversions allowing 
  82. multiple graphic files and formats to be converted at 
  83. a single pass (for example, taking a set of "BMP" and 
  84. "PCX" files and converting them to "JPG").

  86. **Fast email attachment decoding**
  87. PowerDesk's integrated email attachment decoder quickly 
  88. de-scrambles unreadable email attachments, including UUencode, 
  89. MIME/Base64 and BinHex, without requiring a separate decoder. 
  90. It will even create UUencoded files, commonly used in 
  91. Internet newsgroups.

  93. **Robust file security features**
  94. The product features several file security features, including 
  95. "permanent delete", to completely wipe the traces of a file, 
  96. and file encryption/decryption (DES or a proprietary 
  97. PowerDesk encryption algorithm.).

  99. **Hard drive space management**
  100. The Size Manager gives users a graphical, birds-eye view 
  101. of where space is being wasted on a hard drive.  Providing 
  102. detailed information in a simple format, the Size 
  103. Manager gives users the upper hand in dealing with 
  104. space-hogging files.

  106. **Directory comparison and synchronization**
  107. The Synchronizer makes it easy to compare and synchronize 
  108. folders. Users can now easily "sync-up" various folders, 
  109. whether on removable drives, networks or locally.

  111. **Enhanced open and save dialogs for faster file operations**
  112. FullView allows users with larger monitors to resize 
  113. their open/save as dialogs, and Tracker "remembers" up to 
  114. 20 files or locations (drives, folders, URLs) that were 
  115. most recently opened or visited for each application. 
  116. Both features greatly speed common open/save file operations

  119. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  120.  
  121. PowerDesk Utilities requires the following hardware and software:
  122.  
  123. * Hardware:
  124. Any personal computer capable of running Microsoft Windows.
  125. 16MB of RAM (Windows NT 4.0, 95 and 98)
  126. 11MB of free disk space.

  128. * Software:
  129. Microsoft Windows 95, 98 or Windows NT 4.0.  
  130. PowerDesk will NOT run under DOS, Windows 3.1x or Windows NT 3.x.

  132. INSTALLATION
  133.  
  134. The PowerDesk Setup program automatically recognizes which 
  135. version of Windows you are running and installs the appropriate 
  136. settings and components (Windows 95, 98, or NT 4.0). 
  137.  
  138. 1. Place the PowerDesk CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive.
  139. 2. If you have an autostart CD-ROM an 'Install PowerDesk'
  140.    dialog box will automatically open. Enter "yes" and go to 
  141.    step 5 below.
  142. 3. For non-autostart CD-ROMs select the Start button in your 
  143.    Taskbar and choose Run from the displayed Start menu.
  144. 4. In the displayed Run dialog type d:\Setup.exe or e:\Setup.exe 
  145.    (or whatever your CD-ROM drive is) and click on the "OK" button.
  146. 5. Follow the instructions of the installation program.
  147. 6. During the installation process PowerDesk's files will be 
  148.    copied to the destination directory and a "PowerDesk Utilities 
  149.    98" group will be created displaying the icons of the various 
  150.    PowerDesk files and programs.

  153. UNINSTALLING POWERDESK UTILITIES 98
  154.  
  155. 1. Use the Uninstall PowerDesk menu option in the PowerDesk
  156.    Utilities 98 program group.
  157.  
  158. 2. Use the appropriate Add/Remove Programs icon in your Control
  159.    Panel.

  178. IMPORTANT INFORMATION -- READ!
  179.  
  180. To contain the size of PowerDesk Utilites 98 Evaluation
  181. Version 3.0, Mijenix excluded the Microsoft Office 97
  182. and HTML viewers from the product.  These viewers are
  183. available in the registered version of PowerDesk Utilities
  184. 98.
