WINCheckIt Rescue Disk
TouchStone Software Corporation
-------------------------------
Important! For best results, do not use the
RESCUE.EXE program with Windows running.
Using your Rescue disk
----------------------
While the creation of your Rescue Disk was done in Windows (from WINCheckIt's
Realtime menu), you will restore your files using the DOS-based RESCUE.EXE
program located on your Rescue disk.
To run the RESCUE program, change to the drive (and directory if applicable)
where the Rescue disk was created and type:
RESCUE [Enter]
After selecting the Restore button, you will be prompted with a standard open
file dialog box where you will identify the path of your Rescue file. After
you select the Rescue file (named RESCUE.WCK), the RESCUE program will take
a quick survey of the files stored in your Rescue Disk, and then allow you to
make choices as to which files you would like to restore.
By default, the check boxes for all available options will be selected. Any
unavailable options (because the item was not collected), such as PROTOCOL.INI
for non-Windows for Workgroups users, will be grayed out. To select or de-
select an option, tab to that option and press the <Space> bar.
When you have selected and de-selected the files you wish to restore, press
the Restore button. If you have selected files to be restored to your
WINDOWS or WINDOWS\SYSTEM directories, you will be asked to specify your
Windows path. If you are only restoring DOS files or the CMOS table, you
will not be asked for this information.
After typing in the path for Windows (if applicable), the RESCUE program
will begin restoring the files you have selected. You will see a progress
indicator, showing you which files are being copied and how far the process is
toward completion. When all of the selected files have been restored, RESCUE
will return splash screen, where you can select the Restore button to choose
other data to be restored, or Cancel to quit.
Changes from the WINCheckIt User Guide
--------------------------------------
1. The Rescue Disk will automatically save your AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS,
WIN.INI, SYSTEM.INI, and PROTOCOL.INI (if available) files.
2. The Rescue Disk command will save the data you select to a temporary file
in the WCHECKIT\DATA directory and then report to you the necessary disk
space for your target drive. Upon approval, the Rescue Disk command will
then send a copy of the RESCUE.EXE program, the compressed data (in
RESCUE.WCK), and this RESCUE.TXT to your specified target drive.
3. The WINCheckIt User Guide provides instructions for running RESCUE.EXE
from the WCHECKIT directory. This is not necessary, as a copy of
RESCUE.EXE is placed on your target drive.
For more details on the Rescue Disk, please refer to the "Rescue Disk" and
"Restoring from a Rescue Disk" sections in the WINCheckIt Help file.
