This document describes your Canvas 5.0.2 evaluation kit. It explains installing and personalizing Canvas 5.0.2, and how to obtain an evaluation serial number. It also describes the included electronic documentation, a special edition Canvas 5 Evaluation Guide.
ABOUT THE CANVAS 5.0.2 EVALUATION PACKAGE
Your evaluation package contains the following items:
1. Canvas 5.0.2 SETUP.EXE file for Windows 95 and Windows NT
2. Manuals folder with the following:
-- README.TXT: This document explains how to use the electronic Evaluation Guide.
-- EVAL_GUIDE.PDF: This document includes exercises and a "tour" to introduce you to Canvas 5
-- TOUR: Folder containing the Canvas 5 files used in the evaluation exercises
3. ART_SAMPLER: Small sample of the 23,000 pieces of clip art included with Canvas 5
4. 3RDPRTY: Kodak promo movie and PROZIP trial version.
5. BROWSEME.HTML: To be opened with a web browser.
6. BROWSE: Folder used by the BROWSEME.HTML document.
OBTAINING AN EVALUATION SERIAL NUMBER (ACTIVATION CODE)
To activate an evaluation version of Canvas 5.0.2, you must obtain an evaluation serial number from Deneba software's Internet web site. Point your web browser to http://www.deneba.com/evaluate/ and follow the instructions on the page to obtain an evaluation serial number. Note: your browser must support forms.
After registering on the web site, you'll receive a confirmation message and an evaluation serial number by e-mail. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
If you don't have internet access you can still evaluate Canvas 5.0.2 in DEMO mode by entering the following activation code: W101-698927553.
In DEMO mode the program will not save or export documents, and some other features, like pasting in external documents, and OLE, are not available. All documents will print with a demonstration watermark.
CANVAS 5.0.2 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
To run Canvas 5.0.2, you need the following minimum system configuration:
-- IBM-Compatible Pentium powered system
-- Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0
-- 16 MB of RAM for Windows 95
-- 24 MB of RAM for Windows NT
-- 35 MB of free hard drive space for installation
During installation setup, you need to enter your Canvas 5.0.2 evaluation serial number and personalize your copy of the program. If you need an evaluation serial number, see "Obtaining an evaluation serial number" in this document.
1. Quit all running applications and disable anti-virus software. This makes additional memory available and eliminates possible conflicts with the Canvas 5.0.2 Installer.
2. Double-click SETUP.EXE to launch the Canvas 5 Setup program. After reading the Welcome window, click Next. Read the evaluation license agreement, and then click YES to accept the terms of the license.
3. In the User Information dialog box, type your name, company, and evaluation serial number in the text boxes.
4. After entering your User Information, click Next; when the Information Confirmation dialog box appears, click Yes.
5. In the Choose Destination Location dialog box, you can click Browse to specify a location to install Canvas 5.0.2 other than the default. To set the destination directory, click Next. The Canvas Setup -- Choose Setup Type dialog box appears.
6. In the Canvas Setup -- Choose Setup Type dialog box, choose the type of installation: For evaluation purposes, Deneba recommends that you choose "Typical." "Compact" or "Custom" installations might make some procedures in the Evaluation Guide impossible to perform. After choosing an option, click Next.
7. Confirm that the settings are correct in the Canvas Setup -- Review dialog box, and then click Next to begin installing Canvas 5.0.2.
8. After installation is complete, Canvas asks you if you want to run Canvas 5 now. To launch Canvas, click the option in the dialog box and click Finish.
FILES AND FOLDERS INSTALLED WITH CANVAS 5.0.2
Installation creates a Canvas 5 folder with the following items:
-- Canvas 5.0.2 application (Canvas5.exe)
-- Canvas Tools folder containing external tools
-- Color Inks folder containing preset inks for the Inks palette
-- Dictionaries folder containing the spell checking dictionary
-- Extras folder containing preset strokes for the Strokes palette
-- On-Line Help folder containing the On-Line Help
-- Templates folder containing document templates
-- Tutorial folder containing Canvas tutorials and a TUTORIAL-READ ME.TXT file that describes how we made the tutorial documents
-- Uninstall folder containing files needed to remove Canvas from your system using the Windows Add/Remove Programs control panel
-- User folder containing Canvas settings and the user dictionary
-- Various .dll files in the Canvas 5 folder.
TO LAUNCH CANVAS 5.0.2:
Windows 95: In the Canvas 5 folder, double-click the Canvas5.exe application. Or, open the Start menu, choose Programs, and then choose the Canvas 5 shortcut.
Windows NT 3.5.1: Double-click the Canvas 5 icon in the Canvas 5 program group.
You can now begin exploring Canvas 5.0.2. Enjoy!
QUICKTIME
Canvas alerts you at startup if QuickTime for Windows is not installed. In this case, click OK to temporarily disable the QuickTime tool. To avoid the alert at startup, check "Don't Show Me Again" before clicking OK. QuickTime is an optional system software enhancement available from Apple computer.
Initializing the Canvas 5 dictionaries
The first time you choose a spell-checking command, Canvas 5 asks you to locate a Spell Checking Dictionary. In the dialog box, open the Dictionaries folder in the Canvas 5 folder. Select the canvas.dic file and click OK.
ABOUT THIS CANVAS 5 RELEASE
Canvas 5.0.2 provides a number of new and improved features, performance enhancements, and increased stability. Canvas 5.0.2 includes new features for documents, objects, text, and image editing. The on-line Help system is also improved.
After installing Canvas 5.0.2, you can view the Release Notes topic in the on-line Help system. This topic lists the new features and changes in Canvas 5, some of which are not mentioned in the special edition Canvas 5 Evaluation Guide.
To view the Release Notes topic:
1. With Canvas running, choose "Contents" in the Help menu. Or, double-click the "Canvas.hlp" file in the On-line Help folder inside the Canvas 5 folder. This launches the Canvas on-line Help system.
2. In the Canvas Help window, click the underlined text, "Release notes," on the Contents page.
Electronic documentation
For your convenience, a special edition Canvas 5 Evaluation Guide is included with the Canvas 5 evaluation version. The Evaluation Guide is distributed as an Adobe Acrobat portable document, which you can view on your computer. This document includes tutorials and introductions to many Canvas features. For instructions on viewing the Canvas 5 evaluation guide, view the Read Me document in the Manuals folder.
