  27. * ENHANCEMENTS *
  28.  
  29. 1.  VirusScan for Windows 3.1x now implements VShield
  30.     as a virtual device driver (VxD). This replaces the
  31.     VShield Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR), enhancing
  32.     features and reducing the memory footprint. VShield
  33.     operates directly in the Windows environment, no
  34.     longer relying on a DOS TSR.
  35.  
  36. 2.  A VxD is a filter to prevent the spread or
  37.     activation of Macro viruses attempting to
  38.     replicate within Windows applications, such as
  39.     Microsoft Word for Windows.
  40.  
  41. 3.  When a virus is found, VShield's VxD can be
  42.     pre-configured to prompt the user for action or
  43.     to automatically repair, quarantine, deny access
  44.     to, or delete infected files.
  45.  
  46. 4.  McAfee's VShield VxD allows the user to configure when
  47.     to conduct a scan (for example: on file run, copy,
  48.     create, or rename; on floppy disk access) and which
  49.     files to include.

  211.      on-demand scan and then changing a setting in the
  212.      VShield configuration manager.

  216. KNOWN ISSUES
  217.  
  218. 1.  This version will not detect previously installed
  219.     versions of VShield TSR (from 2.2.F and prior) and will
  220.     not remove the path entry made to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
  221.     if the installation was different than the default 
  222.     c:\mcafee\viruscan.
  223.  
  224. 2.  In order to re-enable VShield after disabling it,
  225.     right-click and select Enable.
  226.

  228. INSTALLATION
  229.  
  230. * INSTALLING THE PRODUCT *
  231.  
  232. If you would like to perform a "silent" installation
  233. of VirusScan, requiring minimal user interaction and
  234. using all default or "Typical" installation settings, add
  235. -s (i.e. SETUP.EXE -s) to the setup command when you
  236. install the product.
  237.  
  238. Network Administrators can customize the silent
  239. installation by following the steps below.
  240.  
  241. 1.  Check in the Windows directory to ensure that a
  242.     file named SETUP.ISS does not already exist. If it
  243.     does, rename it, back it up, or delete it.
  244.  
  245. 2.  Run SETUP.EXE with the -r switch, (i.e. SETUP.EXE -r).
  246.  
  247. 3.  Select the components you would like to be installed
  248.     during the silent installation. All responses will
  249.     be recorded.
  250.  
  251. 4.  Finish the installation, and locate the file SETUP.ISS
  252.     in the Windows directory.
  253.  
  254. 5.  Open the file using any ASCII editor (e.g., NOTEPAD.EXE)
  255.     and delete the section titled APPLICATION.
  256.  
  257. 6.  Rename, back up, or delete SETUP.ISS on the first
  258.     installation disk (floppies only). For CD-ROM versions
  259.     of the product, you must copy the installation files
  260.     onto the hard drive before taking this step.
  261.  
  262. 7.  Copy the new SETUP.ISS from the Windows directory
  263.     to the location of the installation files.
  264.  
  265. 8.  Run SETUP.EXE with the -s switch (i.e. SETUP.EXE -s).
  266.  
  267. 9.  When the silent installation is complete, you should
  268.     reboot the machine manually.
  269.  
  270.     NOTE: If you do not specify a "recorded" answer for
  271.     all dialog boxes during the initial installation, the
  272.     silent installation will fail. Also, the file used
  273.     for the silent installation, SETUP.ISS, may not work
  274.     properly across different operating systems. For
  275.     example, if the silent install is generated for
  276.     Windows 95, it may not work properly in Windows 3.1x
  277.     or Windows NT.

  356. create a folder and copy the files to it.

  358. When the installation is complete, it is recommended
  359. that you restart your system.

  362. * TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION *
  363.  
  364. The Eicar Standard AntiVirus Test File is a combined effort 
  365. by anti-virus vendors throughout the world to come up with
  366. one standard by which customers can verify their anti-virus 
  367. installations. To test your installation, copy the following 
  368. line into its own file and name it EICAR.COM.
  369.

  372. When done, you will have a 69 or 70 byte file.
  373.  
  374. When VirusScan is applied to this file, Scan will report
  375. finding the EICAR-STANDARD-AV-TEST-FILE virus.
  376.  
  377. It is important to know that THIS IS NOT A VIRUS. However,
  378. users often have the need to test that their installations
  379. function correctly. The anti-virus industry, through the
  380. European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research, has
  381. adopted this standard to facilitate this need.
  382.  
  383. Please delete the file when installation testing is
  384. completed so unsuspecting users are not unnecessarily 
  385. alarmed.

  424. Q:  When I have an infected file, why does the
  425.     infected counter increase by increments greater
  426.     than one?

  428. A:  The file system will typically access a file more
  429.     than once. On each access, VirusScan scans the file
  430.     and detects the infection.

  433. Q:  Does VShield detect Word Macro infections?
  434.  
  435. A:  Yes. VShield detects and cleans Word Macro infections.

  438. Q:  Can I update VirusScan's data files to detect
  439.     new viruses?

  441. A:  Yes. If you have Internet access, you can download
  442.     updated VirusScan data files from the McAfee Web 
  443.     Site, BBS, or other online resources. To download 
  444.     from the McAfee Web Site, follow these steps:
  445.  
  446.     1.  Go to the McAfee Web Site (http://www.mcafee.com
  447.         or 205.227.129.97).
  448.  
  449.     2.  Click on the Download McAfee button in the upper
  450.         left hand column or frame.

  452.     3.  Click Get that DAT to update DAT files.

  454.     4.  View the information provided on new DAT files
  455.         and downloading.

  459.     6.  Data file updates are stored in a compressed form 
  460.         to reduce transmission time. Unzip the files into
