The object is opaque and therefore stops all light that falls on it. The object leaves a region of shadow behind it which is the same shape as the silhouette of the object when viewed along a line towards the light source. In ancient times it was through careful observation of the shadow cast by the Earth on the moon during a lunar eclipse that the spherical shape of the Earth could be proven.
