The circular piece of DNA, known as a 'plasmid' and now containing a length of human DNA, is inserted back into a culture of bacterial cells which will be put into conditions where they can grow and reproduce extremely rapidly. The ways in which the plasmid is inserted back into a bacterial cell are quite varied, but bacteria are much more willing than humans to accept foreign DNA into their cells.
