  12. This is another enhanced, updated release of The Guide!, an article display,
  13. query, print, etc. system for Project Galactic-Guide (bringing to life
  14. "The HitchHiker's Guide to the Known Galaxy").

  16. The current version number is 1.45, compiled 05/25/93.
  17.  
  18. The Guide! is distributed as [ TGxxx.ZIP ] where the xxx represents the
  19. current version number.  In this case, the filename is: TG145.ZIP
  20. This .ZIP file contains these files:

  22.      GUIDE.EXE      -- the main program
  23.      GUIDE.DOC      -- all-too-brief documentation file
  24.      UPDATE.EXE     -- GuideNET update/report/delete utilities
  25.      READ.ME        -- quickie start-up dox for the impatient

  32. Version 1.45 (Maintenance Release), 05/25/93
  33.  
  34.      * Added a new command-line parameter to Guide.EXE: [ /ShowLoad ].
  35.        This makes TG! display the Load dialog box upon startup.  It's very
  36.        handy for network use when you have multiple GuideNET files on-line
  37.        and don't want to have a bunch of different batch files, each with
  38.        a different [ /LOAD= ] parameter.  Cool.
  39.  
  40.      * Fixed a weird glitch in Update.EXE, when it'd sometimes halt
  41.        during updating with a run-time error 205.  When I messed around
  42.        with it for a while, and tried some different stuff, the error
  43.        stopped happening, so that must mean it's fixed <grin>.
  44.  
  45.      * Work is slow but steady on TGEdit (that's what the IAE stuff has
  46.        evolved into these days).  It's going to be GREAT!
  47.  
  48.      * This is the last release of TG! with all the PGG article archives
  49.        included.  From now on (or I should say, from next time on), the
  50.        file TGxxx.ZIP will only have TG!-specific files, and the archives
  51.        will be distributed in ARCHIVES.ZIP for MS-DOS users.

  53. Version 1.45, 05/12/93
  54.  
  55.      * Pulled all of the Internal Article Editor (IAE) stuff out of Update
  56.        and into its own separate program.  Too many conflicts and memory
  57.        junk got in the way... the new program will be called either Editor
  58.        or IAE (haven't decided yet), and is *not* included in this release
  59.        because it's not complete yet.  However, it is coming along rather
  60.        nicely, and should be ready in another few weeks.
  61.  
  62.      * Redesigned the "Date Parameters" dialog box to use the user-definable
  63.        Date Pattern information.  The dialog box is a lot easier to work
  64.        with now, and it still verifies that the date information you enter
  65.        is correct, based on the current Date Pattern.
  66.  
  67.        The Date Parameters dialog box now insures that you enter a valid day
  68.        depending on what month you enter (i.e., you can not enter 04/31/yy
  69.        since April does not have 31 days, and you can only enter 02/29/yy
  70.        when the year yy is a leap year, etc.).

  72.      * Added a toggle in the Standard Options dialog box which allows you
  73.        to disable the multiple-key speed search and use single-key speed
  74.        search instead.  The option in Guide.INI is 'UseMultiKey' and
  75.        defaults to True.
  76.  
  77.      * Added a toggle in the Standard Options dialog box which disables some
  78.        of the "Don't Panic" status messages (for the discriminating network
  79.        administrators and other tight folks).  The option in Guide.INI is
  80.        called 'ShowStatusMsg' and defaults to True.  Some critical messages
  81.        still get displayed regardless of this setting, however.

  83.      * Added a new command-line parameter [ /Config=path\ ] which tells
  84.        the system where to load and save both the Guide.INI file and the
  85.        search parameters.  If you omit this parameter, or if the path you
  86.        specify is invalid, then TG! will (try to) load Guide.INI from the
  87.        directory where Guide.EXE (or Update.EXE) was loaded.

  89.        Note that instead of the equal sign ('=') you can optionally use
  90.        a colon (':')... this is because DOS batch files treat the equal
  91.        sign as a delimiter, so the parameter [ /config=c:\fred ] gets
  92.        parsed into two parameters, [ /config ] and [ c:\fred ] when run
  93.        inside a batch file.  Bummer.  (This also applies to the /Load=
  94.        and the /Auto= parameters.)

  96. Version 1.42, 04/24/93

  98.      * Added a Standard Options dialog box, available in the File pull-down
  99.        menu.  This is where you can set the remainder of the variables from
  100.        the Guide.INI configuration file.  In addition, I moved the "Save
  101.        Configuration" toggle out of the Verify Exit dialog box and into
  102.        this Standard Options box.  (This is similar to the change made from
  103.        Windows 3.0 to 3.1.)
  104.  
  105.      * (Here we go again...)  Re-did the Cross-References again, because
  106.        they weren't always being alphabetized in the Ctrl+F4 screen
  107.        (which they should have) and I noticed a few Cross-References were
  108.        not being double-linked back (which they should have).
  109.  
  110.        When loading GuideNET data, you'll notice a significant increase in
  111.        speed.  This is because I completely reorganized the way in which
  112.        Cross-References are stored.  Cool.
  113.  
  114.        Everything's now OK, but this means that your existing (old) GuideNET
  115.        files must be scrapped (deleted) before this new release of TG! will
  116.        operate.  Bummer.
  117.  
  118.        1) Delete : *.DAT, *.HDR, *.XRF, *.IDX, *.SNC
  119.        2) Run    : Update /AUTO
  120.  
  121.      * Continued to update the Guide.NEW/Guide.DOC documenation file, and
  122.        included stuff on this new dialog box and the command-line switches.

  124. Version 1.40, 04/18/93
  125.  
  126.      * DESQview support now incorporated into the system.  TG! will always
  127.        release its idle clock cycles if DV is detected.  Note that TG! does
  128.        not issue any DV "Critical Region" commands to clog up your system,
  129.        since TG! is happy just to do its thing when allowed by DV.  To view
  130.        what version of DV you're using, see the File | Get Info... screen.

  132.      * TG!'s Network support is now greatly enhanced by, well, having some.
  133.        The new boolean variable in the Guide.INI configuration file is
  134.        'NetworkSync' which defaults to False.  If you don't have a network,
  135.        don't bother playing with this switch, because you'll only slow down
  136.        your article retrieval process a little bit.
  137.  
  138.        I'm not going to go into what it does here; instead, see "The Guide!
  139.        and Networks," section 7.0 in the Guide.DOC/Guide.NEW documentation
  140.        files (which have been updated with the network information, plus a
  141.        full section about the Guide.INI configuration file, as well as typo
  142.        corrections and other little things).

  144.      * Now you can press the [ Esc ] key to close article windows in the
  145.        Guide.EXE program.  (Of course, the conventional ways to close the
  146.        windows still work also; this is just another way.)  In addition, if
  147.        you press [ Esc ] to close the last/only article, then TG! will
  148.        close the article and bring up either the Index or the Table of
  149.        Contents (depending on if you use the [ /TOC ] parameter and if
  150.        the "StartWithTOC" variable in Guide.INI is True or False, etc.).

  154.      * Added an additional help screen which lists some of the article
  155.        window commands (stuff you can do when an article is up on-screen).
  156.        It's available in the Help | Window Commands... pull-down menu,
  157.        and by pressing [ Ctrl+F1 ].

  159.      * Fixed a minor glitch in the 'OutputPath' variable handling.  It
  160.        would not accept the path you specify if it had a final backslash;
  161.        the system is now tolerant of these if present.  Thus, you can define
  162.        [ C:\GUIDE ] or [ C:\GUIDE\ ] and the system will accept either one,
  163.        assuming of course that the drive and/or directory is valid.

  165.      * Fixed a minor conflict between the Guide.INI configuration file
  166.        and use of the [ /LOAD= ] command-line parameter.  The system used
  167.        to override the /LOAD= command with whatever was defined in the .INI
  168.        file; this has been reversed (the /LOAD= now overrides the .INI).

  170.      * More little stuff here and there.  One of the neat things: the status
  171.        line at the bottom of the screen now is updated while an action is
  172.        being performed (ie, retrieving, printing, or saving an article;
  173.        searching the GuideNET; adding articles in Update.EXE; etc).
