  1. INSTALLING VOSSNET ONLINE FOR USE WITH 32-BIT WINSOCK APPS

  3. In order to use 32-bit Winsock applications through Voss Net, such as Netscape
  4. for Windows 95, the wsock32.dll file that is installed with Voss Net must be
  5. in your windows\system directory. We have provided a program that will do that
  6. for you called the '32-bit Winsock Switcher'. To enable 32bit applications just
  7. run that from the 'Voss Net Online' icon group. If you have more than one Internet
  8. service provider and you use Windows'95 dialup networking to connect to them you
  9. can also use this program to switch between the two connections.

  11. When you run the 32-bit Winsock Switcher, you will see a message that shows
  12. you which 32-bit Winsock you are currently using, and you will have the
  13. option to choose the original Winsock or the Pipeline (Voss Net Online) Winsock.

  15. IF YOU GET THIS MESSAGE: "The Wsock32.dll is in memory."  
  16.   
  17. This means that one or more applications are accessing the file.  You will
  18. need to temporarily exit from all open 32-bit Winsock apps, then run the
  19. Switcher again.  Also, there are some programs that access the wsock32.dll
  20. file that wouldn't normally be considered Winsock applications.  Norton
  21. Undo and Norton Taskbar are two examples.  Please let us know if you run
  22. across any others.

  24. If you close all those apps and still get the message that the file is in
  25. memory (or if you are not able to close one or more of them), you will need
  26. to restart Windows.  Some apps might not properly release the file from
  27. memory.  But first, check your StartUp group to see if there are any apps
  28. in there that might be using the file.  If there are, you will need to
  29. remove them, then restart Windows.  If you will be using the Switcher
  30. often, it would be best to permanently remove those apps from StartUp, and
  31. always run them manually after running the Switcher.  If you will only be
  32. using the Switcher occasionally, just create a temporary icon group for
  33. those apps, then move them back into the Startup group after running the
  34. Switcher.  Also, there are some applications that run automatically but
  35. don't have icons in StartUp.  Instead of removing them from StartUp, you
  36. would have to set their options menu to not have them run automatically. 
  37. Again, Norton Undo and Taskbar are two examples where you will have to turn
  38. off the auto-run option, temporarily or permanently, depending on how often
  39. you need to switch.  If you tend to switch between Internet service
  40. providers often, it may just be easier for you to not use 32-bit apps with
  41. Voss Net, and wait for the next version which should provide a permanent
  42. solution that won't require switching the wsock32.dll file.

  45. NOTE TO WIN32S USERS

  47. 32-bit Winsock apps running through Win32s do not use wsock32.dll.  They
  48. use winsock.dll.  Therefore, it is not necessary to use the 32bit Winsock
  49. Switcher.
