  1. Help on Connecting to Voss Net Online

  9. The first thing you need to do in order to connect to Voss Net Online is to click on 
  10. the Connect! menu option that is located on the Main Menu page of the software. 
  11. This will open up the 'Connect to Voss Net Online!' window. From here, simply verify
  12. that all of the settings on the page are accurate and type in your password (if it 
  13. is not already in the password box). Finally, click on the 'Connect' button and
  14. let the software do the rest. It will dial into Voss Net Online and connect you to the
  15. network. If there are no modem settings shown on the 'Connect to Voss Net Online!'
  16. window, click on the 'Options' menu item and then the 'Advanced Options' menu item.
  17. This will expand the connection window and display all of your current modem settings.

  19. The follow menu options are available in the 'Connect to Voss Net Online!' window:

  23.      Exit - Exit the 'Connect to Voss Net Online!' window.

  27.      Create user account - Adds an existing account to the Voss Net Online software.

  31.      Remember password across sessions - Saves your password between sessions. 
  32.      Hide password - Security measure that encrypts your password with asterisks (*). 
  33.      Advanced Options - Displays all of the current modem and dial-up settings.

  37.      Set Modem Initialization String - Use this to change or update your modem settings.

  39. CONNECTION

  41.      Direct Dial - Normal method of dialing into Voss Net Online with a modem. 
  42.      Network - Allows for connection via a TCP/IP network if your PC is already on the
  43.                Internet.

  47.      This menu option opens up this help file.

  50. The following settings can also be changed in the 'Connect to Voss Net Online!' window:
  51.  
  52. Phone Number: You can either use the drop down menu or type in a new phone number 
  53. manually using the phone number box.
  54.  
  55. Dialing Prefix: This should be used if you need to dial a 9 to get out of your 
  56. office's phone system. It can also be used if you wish to disable call waiting before
  57. connecting to Voss Net Online. You should always put a comma (,) after the dialing prefix
  58. to send a pause to your modem.
  59.  
  60. Dialing Suffix: This should be used if your setup requires any type of number to be 
  61. dialed after the original phone number.
  62.  
  63. Modem Setup: This is where your modem's initialization string is stored. You can either 
  64. use the Modem/Set Modem Initialization String option or simply input the new string 
  65. directly into this box.
  66.  
  67. Modem Hangup: This is the string that your modem utilizes to hangup. Most Hayes compatible 
  68. modems use ATH as the Hangup string.
  69.  
  70. Modem Speed: This is where you should set the speed of your modem. Note that 28,800 
  71. baud modems should be set to 38,400 baud with Voss Net Online. You should avoid setting
  72. a modem speed that is too fast for your modem as this may cause an unstable connection.
  73. As a rule of thumb, you should not use a modem speed that is one setting faster than 
  74. the speed of your modem.

  76. Comm Port: This is where you should set the Comm Port number that your modem is setup 
  77. to use. If you are unsure as to which Comm Port your modem is on, see the Troubleshooting 
  78. Section at the bottom of this page.
  79.  
  80. Dial Type: This is the type of dialing that your phone line uses. Most of the United Kingdom 
  81. is using Tone Dial.

  84. Conecting Troubleshooting:
  85.  
  86. Q.  Everytime I dial in, it says "Tapping Enter" and does nothing.
  87.  
  88. A.  Two things can cause this, first, your modem not properly resetting,
  89.     and second, a problem at the POP (the number you are calling).
  90.  
  91.     Reset the modem yourself, by turning it off and then back on.  If
  92.     it's an internal modem, close down Windows and turn the computer off
  93.     and then back on.
  94.  
  95.     If you still see the "tapping enter", please notify Voss Net
  96.     Customer Support.
  97.  
  98. Q.  I cannot get into Voss Net Online.  I hit connect, my modem says
  99.     "dialing", "waiting for pickup", "waiting for host", and then
  100.     finally "we cannot complete your call, try again later," and in the
  101.     bottom left of the screen "ok, cancelled."
  102.  
  103. A.  The modem is not properly hooked up, or is not hooked up to the
  104.     right place.  There is no dialtone; connect it to a handset and
  105.     listen.  You can check this for yourself by dialing the number
  106.     through a terminal program.  It will likely say NO DIAL TONE.

  108. Q.  I try dialing in and the phone icon turns red (or yellow) and I see
  109.     a message "could not open port" ("could not write to modem" or
  110.     "could not initialize modem").
  111.  
  112. A.  Most likely, you're using the wrong com port, try another.  If you
  113.     are not sure of the com port, exit Windows (you must exit and not
  114.     just drop to DOS).  Now run MSD.  This is a DOS program that is
  115.     packaged with DOS 6.0+.  Type C to see where your computer thinks
  116.     the modem is.  Then press alt-f,x to get back out. Alternatively,
  117.     you can just try each com port in turn until you find the one that
  118.     makes the modem dial.
  119.  
  120.     If this doesn't solve the problem, recheck the line going from the
  121.     phone jack to the modem.  Check also for any other programs that are
  122.     running along with Voss Net Online.  Press ctrl-esc for a task list, and
  123.     close down any other active programs besides the Program Manager.

  125.     If you're calling from a switchboard you may need to add a 9, in the
  126.     dialing prefix area of the connect screen to get an outside line.

  128. Q.  Do I always have to type in my password to connect?
  129.  
  130. A.  No, you don't have to enter your password for every Voss Net Online
  131.     session, but that is the safest way.  You can choose Options and
  132.     click on Remember password across sessions.  Of course if you choose
  133.     to Remember the password across sessions and other people have access
  134.     to your computer, then anyone could easily get into your account
  135.     without knowing your password.
