  5. Welcome to Arcade America. This free demo gives you a sample of 
  6. 7th Level's upcoming release.
  7.

  9. INSTALLING THE ARCADE AMERICA DEMO PROGRAM
  10.  
  11. You can install a version of Arcade America to your hard disk so 
  12. that you will not need to have the CD in the CD-ROM drive to 
  13. run the program. To install this version, insert the Arcade America 
  14. Demo CD in the CD-ROM drive, select the File menu and choose Run 
  15. from the Program Manager. Type D:\SETUPHD.EXE (if necessary, 
  16. replace D: with the letter that represents your CD-ROM drive) in 
  17. the command line and press ENTER. Follow the instructions given in 
  18. the installation program. This version will require approximately 
  19. 20 MB of free hard disk space.
  20.  
  21. To conserve hard disk space, you can choose to install a version
  22. of Arcade America that will run from the CD (you must have the
  23. Arcade America CD in the CD-ROM drive to run the program). To install
  24. this version, insert the Arcade America CD in the CD-ROM drive,
  25. select the File menu and choose Run from the Program Manager.
  26. Type D:\SETUP.EXE (if necessary, replace D: with the
  27. letter that represents your CD-ROM drive) in the command line
  28. and press ENTER. Follow the instructions given in the 
  29. installation program.

  31. To start Arcade America, double click the Arcade America icon which was
  32. created for you by the installation program.

  36. JOYSTICK SUPPORT
  37.  
  38. If you have a joystick that already works with other Windows 
  39. applications, then you do not need to do anything to use the 
  40. joystick with Arcade America.
  41.  
  42. If you have not used your joystick with other Windows applications 
  43. before, you may need to install a joystick driver. You can use the 
  44. generic Windows joystick driver that is included on the Arcade America 
  45. CD-ROM. It is recommended, however, that you first try to use the 
  46. Windows driver that came with your joystick. 
  47.  
  48. To install the joystick driver that is included with Arcade America:
  49.  
  50. 1.  Double click the Control Panel icon from the Program Manager 
  51.     to start the Control Panel application.
  52. 2.  Double click the Drivers icon in the Control Panel.
  53. 3.  Click the Add button to add a driver.
  54. 4.  Select the Unlisted or Updated Driver option and click the OK button.
  55. 5.  Open the JOYSTICK directory (either on your hard disk where you
  56.     installed Arcade America or on the Arcade America CD).
  57. 6.  Click the OK button to accept the joystick driver.
  58. 7.  Select the configuration for your joystick from the Game Adapter 
  59.     Setup dialog box and click the OK button.
  60. 8.  Click the Close button to return to the Control Panel.
  61. 9.  Restart Windows.

  63. Next, copy the file JOYSTICK.CPL from the Joystick directory (either 
  64. on your hard disk where you installed Arcade America or on the 
  65. Arcade America CD) to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory.
  66.  
  67. Calibrate and test your joystick by double clicking the Joystick icon 
  68. in the Control Panel.
  69.  
  70. Note: You may need to calibrate your joystick again if you have 
  71. disconnected it from your computer or if you notice the joystick 
  72. interfering with the operation of the mouse.

  75. THE ARCADE AMERICA OPTIONS SCREEN
  76.  
  77. After you see the introduction to Arcade America, you will
  78. see an Options screen. Here you can customize various game options.
  79.  
  80. Select the input method (keyboard or joystick) by clicking on the word 
  81. beside Input Method. 
  82.  
  83. Select the difficulty level (Mondo Weenie or Tough Guy) by clicking
  84. on the word next to Difficulty Level.
  85.  
  86. You can turn on and off special effects. Click on the word next to Special 
  87. Effects to toggle the option on and off. Don't miss out on the neat animation
  88. in Arcade America.
  89.  
  90. You can turn on and off foreground and background audio. Click on the 
  91. word next to Foreground Audio and Background Audio to toggle the option
  92. on and off. You'll want to hear all the cool sounds as you make your way 
  93. through the demo.

  95. Click Done to exit the Options screen and save your selections. Press
  96. ESC to exit the Options screen without saving your changes.

  98. Once you have made your selections, click Start to begin your adventure.

  101. STANDARD MOVES

  103. Below you will find the joystick and keyboard combinations for
  104. getting around Arcade America. You may wish to print this file so that
  105. you have these moves in front of you as you make your way through 
  106. Arcade America.

  108. You can play Arcade America using a joystick that works with any
  109. Windows application or your computer's keyboard. Simply select 
  110. the input method for each player in the Options screen. The following 
  111. list of input commands are for a joystick.

  139. If you have difficulty installing or running Arcade America,
  140. please read the section below before calling our
  141. Technical Support phone line. By checking the few items listed
  142. below, you may be able to solve any difficulty you are having
  143. on your own.

  145. If you are still having difficulty, call Technical Support at 
  146. 214-437-5531. Support is available Monday - Saturday from 
  147. 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Central Time. You also can reach Technical 
  148. Support via America Online (keyword Seventh), the Microsoft 
  149. Network (Go Seventh) or CompuServe (Go Seventh).

  159. Problem:
  160.    Arcade America seems to run slow.
  161.  
  162. Solution:
  163.    As with any program running under Windows, the speed and the
  164.    smoothness of Arcade America is dependent on the speed of the
  165.    hardware that it is running on. Hardware configurations that affect
  166.    performance are: the amount of memory and the speed of the video
  167.    card, the processor type, the amount of real memory and the transfer
  168.    rate of the CD-ROM drive. While the minimum system configuration
  169.    required to run the Arcade America is a 486 33 MHz computer with 8 MB
  170.    of RAM, a video card capable of running 256 colors and a double-speed
  171.    CD-ROM drive, the recommended system configuration is a 486 66 MHz 
  172.    computer with 16 MB of RAM. You may be able to improve the
  173.    performance of Arcade America running on your computer by upgrading one 
  174.    or all of these elements of your computer system, depending on what 
  175.    you already have.

  177.    If you are running on a computer with the minimum system requirements,
  178.    here are some things you can do to try to increase your system's 
  179.    performance:
  180.  
  181.    1. Disable the background ambient sounds in the Options screen.
  182.    2. Make sure you have a permanent swap file of at least 5 MB set up 
  183.       in Windows.
  184.    3. Do a full hard disk installation, if you have the space available
  185.       on your hard disk.
  186.  
  187. Problem:
  188.    When I try to run Arcade America, I get a "Not enough memory" message.
  189.  
  190. Solution:
  191.    On an 8 MB system, Arcade America requires 5 to 10 MB of virtual memory. 
  192.    For instructions on setting virtual memory, please consult your
  193.    Windows documentation.
  194.  
  195. Problem:
  196.   The program does not display properly.
  197.  
  198. Solution:
  199.    Make sure you have a video card running in 640x480 or 800x600 mode
  200.    with 256 colors. Also, make sure that you have the proper display
  201.    driver installed. A display with more colors or running at a higher
  202.    resolution also will work with Arcade America.
  203.  
  204. Problem:
  205.    The program is working, but I don't hear any fight sounds.
  206.  
  207. Solution:
  208.    Make sure your sound card is installed and working properly. You can
  209.    check the sound from your sound board by using the Sound utility in
  210.    the Control Panel. Choose one of the WAV files in the Windows
  211.    directory and click Test. 
  212.  
  213. Problem:
  214.    The sound or video skips during the program.
  215.  
  216. Solution:
  217.    Make sure you have at least 8 MB of RAM. Also, make sure that an
  218.    expanded memory manager (such as EMM386, QEMM or 386MAX) is not
  219.    reserving memory that Windows and Arcade America will need to run 
  220.    correctly.
  221.  
  222. Problem:
  223.    I can't get the MIDI files to play. (I'm not getting any music.)
  224.  
  225. Solution:
  226.    Most sound cards are not set up to play MIDI files unless you 
  227.    have a MIDI peripheral device attached to your computer. To set 
  228.    your sound card so that MIDI files will play without a MIDI 
  229.    peripheral device attached, follow the steps below.
  230.  
  231.    To change your MIDI settings under Windows 3.1:
  232.  
  233.    1. Double click the MIDI Mapper icon in the Control Panel.
  234.    2. Make sure the Setups radial button is selected. 
  235.    3. Click the down arrow in the Name list box.
  236.    4. Select a MIDI setup file. You should select either  General MIDI 
  237.       or All FM. (Check your sound card documentation for the correct 
  238.       setup file. If you have the SoundBlaster 16 card, select All FM.)
  239.    5. With the correct setup file selected, click the Edit button.    
  240.    6. Confirm that the correct driver is displayed for at least channels 
  241.       1 through 10. (Check your sound card documentation for the correct 
  242.       driver name. If you have a SoundBlaster 16 sound card, each channel 
  243.       should be set to the Voyetra Super Sapi FM driver.)
  244.    7. Click the OK button to exit the MIDI Setup dialog box. As you exit, 
  245.       click the Yes button to save any changes youÆve made or the No button 
  246.       to cancel any changes.
  247.    8. Click the Close button to exit the MIDI Mapper.
  248.  
  249.    To change your MIDI settings under Windows 95:
  250.  
  251.    1. Select the Start Menu.
  252.    2. Choose Settings and open the Control Panel.
  253.    3. Double click the Multimedia icon and select the MIDI tab.
  254.    4. Select the MIDI setup file. (Check your sound card documentation for 
  255.       the correct setup file.)
  256.    5. Click the OK button and exit the Control Panel.

  259. Problem:
  260.    The sound and video are not synchronized properly.
  261.  
  262. Solution:
  263.    Make sure that you are running Arcade America on a 486 33 MHz or 
  264.    better IBM-compatible computer with at least 8 MB of RAM.
  265.  
  266. Problem:
  267.   The sound breaks up or has a lot of static.
  268.  
  269. Solution:
  270.    You may need to change the DMA setting on your sound card. Please
  271.    check the documentation for your sound card for the proper settings
  272.    and how to change the settings.
  273.  
  274. Problem:
  275.    The volume is too low or too high.
  276.  
  277. Solution:
  278.    You can adjust the volume using the + and - keys within 
  279.    Arcade America.
  280.  
  281. Problem:
  282.    The program seems to run extremely slow.
  283.  
  284. Solution:
  285.    Make sure that you have a permanent swap file of at least 5 MB 
  286.    set up in Windows. Please consult your Windows documentation for 
  287.    instructions regarding your swap file settings.

  290. KEYBOARD FUNCTIONS
  291.  
  292. The following keyboard combinations can be used to replace mouse
  293. movements for certain activities and functions.
  294.  
  295. ALT F4      Exit the program
  296. SHIFT ESC   Exit the program
  297. ESC         Exits back to the main menu one level at a time
  298. +           Raises the master volume
  299. -           Lowers the master volume
  300. SHIFT +     Raises the WAV volume (speech and sound effects)
  301. SHIFT -     Lowers the WAV volume (speech and sound effects)
  302. CONTROL +   Raises the Midi volume (music)
  303. CONTROL -   Lowers the Midi volume (music)
  304. * (keypad)  Toggles the sound on/off
  305. PAUSE       Pause/restarts the animation
  306. SPACEBAR    Stops the current ambient animation
