  1. Voss Net Online Internet - Getting Started
  2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  4. IMPORTANT: Please read the application notes at the end of this document
  5.            if you experience any unexpected behaviour when running the
  6.            software.
  7.  
  8. Thankyou for installing the Voss Net Online Internaut software. This package
  9. contains all the software you need to access the global Internet network of
  10. computers and information sources. The software is completely free and comes
  11. with a free trial of the Voss Net Online service, allowing you to explore
  12. the Internet for a limited period for free!
  13.  
  14. To register for your free trial, please follow the simple steps below:
  15.  
  16. 1. Firstly, you must decide on a username for your account. This must be
  17. made up of 8 or less letters or numbers; no punctuation characters are
  18. allowed. It's probably a good idea to think of two possible usernames, just
  19. in case somebody else has already registered your first choice. Most people
  20. choose some contraction of their first and last name (eg. Fred Flintstone
  21. might pick fstone) but it's completely up to you.

  23. 2. Now start up the Voss Net Internaut by double clicking on the Voss Net
  24. Online icon in the Voss Net Online program group. After a short while the
  25. main Internaut window will pop up.
  26.  
  27. 3. Next, you must setup the program to talk to your modem. Click on the
  28. 'Connect!' menu and a window will pop up. Choose the correct telephone
  29. number for your area from the 'Phone Number' box. Then ensure that the
  30. correct speed and Comm port is set for your modem. Finally, go up to the
  31. 'Modem' menu and select the 'Set modem initialization string' option, find
  32. your modem in the menu that pops up and double click on it. If it's not there
  33. just leave it for the moment, the default string should work ok. Please do
  34. not modify the Username and Password boxes at all.

  36. 4. Now you're ready to go online and register. Click the Connect box next to
  37. the telephone icon. You modem should now spring to life and dial Voss Net
  38. Online.
  39.  
  40. 5. After a short wait you will be connected to Voss Net. Now, just follow
  41. the instructions that come up to take you through the registration procedure.
  42.  
  43. 6. If all goes well you will now have a Voss Net Online trial username and
  44. password. To use the account just go up to the 'Users' menu and pick the
  45. 'Add new user' option. Then type your username and full name into the boxes
  46. that come up and click on ok. The account will now be set up. When
  47. everything settles down, just type your password into the 'Password' box,
  48. exactly as given to you by the Voss Net system during registration.

  50. 7. Finally, click 'Connect' to go online and explore the Internet!

  52. After a period your trial account will cease to give you full access to
  53. the Net and you will be invited to take out a full subscription. This
  54. should take no more than a few seconds and a re-login to complete, so
  55. interruption to the service will be minimal.

  58. trial account, please read the 'Helpful Hints' file.

  68. APPLICATION NOTES 
  69.  
  70. If you are using smartdrive with the /x option, you may encounter some
  71. errors with directory and file creation when using the user interface.  This
  72. is known problem and a fix is forthcoming. The temporary workaround is to
  73. use smartdrive without the /x option.
  74.  
  75. On some hi-colour graphics cards running in 24bit mode you may encounter 
  76. 'Overflow Error' messages. If you come accross these reduce the number of
  77. colours in Windows to 65,536 or 256.

  79. If you find that Voss Net Online's response is sluggish, especially on local
  80. documents such as when clicking on the 'Today' icon, you may have to change
  81. some settings on your Windows configuration. To do this, load up the Windows
  82. SYSTEM.INI file into Notepad and find the [386Enh] section. Look through this
  83. section for a line that reads COMxFIFO=0 (where x is the number of your modem's
  84. comm port). If you find that line, change the 0 to 1 so it reads COMxFIFO=1.
  85. If the line isn't present then add it, again so it reads COMxFIFO=1. Then,
  86. restart Windows before attempting to connect again.
