  2.           THE LOADSTAR STORY

  6.     In 1982, Jim & Judi Mangham
  7. had a crazy idea: Put quality software
  8. on a monthly disk. "Softdisk" for the
  9. Apple II was born on thier Shreveport,
  10. LA kitchen table. It was a hit, and
  11. two years later, they expanded by
  12. creating LOADSTAR for the very popular
  13. Commodore 64.
  14.  
  15.     Fender Tucker joined Softdisk,
  16. Inc., as Managing Editor of LOADSTAR
  17. in 1984, and brought a classy sense of
  18. style and "off-kilter" vision to the
  19. magazine. Around issue 60, he wrote
  20. about the Mighty LOADSTAR Tower, an
  21. ediface worthy of such a grand
  22. publishing enterprise. The heighth of
  23. the mythic Tower became the current
  24. issue number -- and it just kept
  25. growing!

  27.     LOADSTAR, as well as Softdisk and
  28. several publications for IBM and MAC
  29. machines, never depended on
  30. advertising. The Subscribers got what
  31. they paid for -- eight to ten great
  32. peices of software every month. The
  33. programs came mostly from independent
  34. programmers, and the creativity knew
  35. no bounds.

  37.     The original Softdisk monthly
  38. ended its run with issue 165 as Apple
  39. II use declined. LOADSTAR raced past
  40. this benchmark a couple of years later
  41. without looking back. Today, LOADSTAR
  42. is the longest running Commodore
  43. publication, and perhaps the longest
  44. running single platform computer
  45. publication ever.

  47.     LOADSTAR split off from Softdisk,
  48. Inc., and Fender and Judi took it back
  49. to their home. Subscriptions dimished,
  50. but Fender did not want to see
  51. LOADSTAR come to an end. In 1999, they
  52. turned the reins over to Sheri and me
  53. as they moved on to other pursuits.
  54.  
  55.     We moved the base of operation to
  56. Holly, CO, where I am a full time
  57. clergy. Editing LOADSTAR keeps me out
  58. of trouble! And we are dedicated to
  59. keeping this [institution] of the
  60. Commodore Scene running as long as we
  61. have subscribers and new software the
  62. share.

  67. graphics or special effects, if you
  68. have anything interesting and
