Memorandum March 25, 1992
The following is prepared to address compatibility issues for
WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows users who are upgrading to Windows
3.1. Also at issue is a PC Week article (March 23, pg. 8)
concerning compatibility problems between Windows 3.1 and WP 5.1
Win.
∙ Will WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows run under Windows 3.1?
Yes. The minor compatibility issues between Windows 3.1 and
WP 5.1 Win have been addressed by Microsoft through work-
arounds in Windows 3.1 (see below). In addition, the
upcoming interim release of WP 5.1 Win will make the work-
arounds unnecessary.
∙ Work-arounds in Windows 3.1
Microsoft has incorporated work-arounds into their WIN.INI
file to address compatibility issues introduced with Windows
3.1. They are listed under the [Compatibility] section in
the WIN.INI file. For example, the entries "WIN2WRS=0x1210"
and "WPWINFIL=0x0006" are listed to resolve minor problems
Microsoft encountered with WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows.
∙ Do customers need to change anything in order for
WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows to run under Windows 3.1?
No. The work-arounds are automatically installed with
Windows 3.1, so customers will never encounter these minor
incompatibilities unless they delete or edit the applicable
entries in the [Compatiblity] section of the WIN.INI file.
Whether customers are running the shipping version, or the
upcoming interim of WP 5.1 Win, Windows 3.1 compatibility
issues are resolved. Either way, this is transparent to the
user.
∙ What should customers do if they run across a problem with
WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows and Windows 3.1?
Call customer support and explain the problem. As always,
WordPerfect Corporation will do its best to resolve all
customer problems. The compatibility issues with Windows
3.1 of which we are aware have been addressed, and we will
continue to address problems as we are aware of them in the
future.
