THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c) V4.0B
Copyright 1990-92 by S.T.Calise
Mailing Address: 673 Herbertsville Road, Brick NJ 08724 USA
Read further for QUICK START installation and run.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c) is a SHELL utility program for McAfee's
virus fighter programs VIRUSCAN, CLEAN, and VALIDATE. VIRUS TERMINUS
is menu driven and can be used with a mouse or keyboard. One of the
main objectives in writing this program was to help reduce the amount
of user input required each time a file is scanned, cleaned or paced
through the validate functions. The SCAN/CLEAN program switches have
been made visible and can be toggled through an easy to use interface.
Reports may be viewed, printed, merged or deleted. DOS BATCH files
may be run directly from The VIRUS TERMINUS.
Now included as a selection at the main menu are Virus Fact
Sheets. A user may obtain information on virus infectors such as the
known characteristics, areas of damage, the McAfee Associates
disinfection program needed, etc.
This version of The Virus Terminus features a start-up SELF
TEST. All files in the Terminus program directory are submitted
to SCAN for inspection. Memory is checked as well as the individual
program files - SCAN, CLEAN and VALIDATE. This option is initiated
at start-up by adding a /T to the command line. (See note)
Version 4.0B of The VIRUS TERMINUS sports a re-designed option
switch user interface. New SCAN/CLEAN options including /FAST, /MAINT,
messages in Spanish or French, /CERTIFY and more are supported.
The Virus Terminus v4.0a is infinitely faster than prior versions
when checking lists of files. Maximum advantage has been taken of the
SCAN/CLEAN v85 @filename response file mechanism.
A support BBS is now available to all users. Dial 908-206-1386
with No Parity, 8 Data bits, 1 Stop bit (N 8 1). The BBS is online
7 days a week 6 PM to 6 AM Eastern Standard Time ( EST ). The latest
updates, support files, etc. and a message conference for registered
users is available. Voice support 9AM - 5PM Mon. - Fri. 908-206-1386
TERMINUS was designed to run from a hard disk but will also
work satisfactorily if installed on a high capacity floppy (720K,
1.2MEG, or 1.44MEG disk size) drive where the main objective is
to quickly sanitize an already infected system. Current SCAN, CLEAN
and Virus Terminus file set sizes also allow installation on a 360K
floppy disk.(#8.1 v85 or #8.3v86 SCAN,CLEAN; VALIDATE v0.3; Terminus
v4.0x)
The Virus Terminus caters to the low-end of the video standard
spectrum by offering compatibility with IBM MDA monochrome, IBM CGA
Color and those systems that utilize the IBM CGA standard but employ
a money saving green, amber or white monochrome display device.
THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c) is simple, easy to use, it gets the job done!
The VIRUS TERMINUS(c) may not be used in a business, corporation, government
or agency environment without a negotiated site license. All rights are
strictly reserved. Read VT40B.DOC for further information.

***** QUICK START:
The VIRUS TERMINUS(c) is a SHELL and requires the following programs
for full access to ALL functions:
SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS:
PC/MS DOS V2.1 - 5.0
Version v85,v86 or higher - SCAN, CLEAN; VALIDATE.COM; VIRLIST.TXT
from McAfee Associates (See Version notes & restrictions in VT40B.DOC)
Make sure you have the following files from each(* see below *) of the
above in the same subdirectory for hard disk installation or on the
same (* see note *) floppy for quick start and access to all TERMINUS
functions:
McAfee Associates files: SCAN.EXE; CLEAN.EXE; VALIDATE.COM;
VIRLIST.TXT;
VIRUS TERMINUS files : VT40B.EXE; VTCF1.EXE; VTCF2.EXE;
VTCF3.EXE;
MS/PC DOS files required : COMMAND.COM
DO NOT use the Virus Terminus in any environment or on any
machine where another virus disinfector utility is or has been
run. This includes but is not limited to TSR virus utilities. No
claim is made herein or otherwise as to compatibility with other
author/program virus disinfector & detector utilities.
***** NOTE: The Virus Terminus and its associated programs SHOULD NOT be
used with any other virus detection or disinfection software.
Certain other anit-virus programs do not utilize encrypted
search strings and other advanced techniques which may cause
false alarms either with Terminus or during their own operation.
This warning extends but is not limited to TSR type detectors.
Use The Virus Terminus in concert with the McAfee Associates
anti-virus programs ONLY for best results.(Read VT40B.DOC)
The use of non-encrypted search strings is in direct contrast
to current accepted industry standards and suggested CVIA
guidelines. (Computer Virus Industry Association)
***** NOTE: This version of VIRUS TERMINUS allows the use of separate
subdirectories for TERMINUS, SCAN, CLEAN, VALIDATE, VIRLIST
when installed on a HARD DISK. Floppy users MUST place the
Terminus files and COMMAND.COM in the ROOT directory.
***** NOTE: This version of The Virus Terminus allows installation and
run from either DRIVE #A or #B floppy
***** NOTE: This version of VIRUS TERMINUS uses compressed executable
files to reduce the size of VT40B.EXE, VTCF1.EXE, VTCF2.EXE,
VTCF3.EXE, and REGISTER.EXE
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RUN TERMINUS FROM YOUR HARD DRIVE IF IT IS ALREADY
INFECTED WITH A VIRUS. USE THE FLOPPY INSTALLATION INSTEAD! DO NOT
RUN ANY PROGRAMS LOCATED ON YOUR HARD DISK UNTIL ALL FILES AND YOUR
ENTIRE SYSTEM IS DISINFECTED.
HARD DRIVE ---> 1. Create one subdirectory(see above) for SCAN,CLEAN
,VALIDATE,VIRLIST, and THE VIRUS TERMINUS files.
2. Copy McAfee Associates and VIRUS TERMINUS files
to the subdirectory.
* 3. Change the current drive and subdirectory to the
location of The VIRUS TERMINUS and then run the
file VT40B.EXE. Press <ENTER> after typing each
of the following lines.
C:
cd\location
vt40B.exe
C: may be D: or whatever drive you installed
The VIRUS TERMINUS program on. cd\location
may be cd\utility\viruscan or any subdirectory
you placed the TERMINUS files in.
4. Press F5 to configure. Then use main menu select
#5 to create VCLEAN.LST
FLOPPY ---> 1. Shut your system down if it is already infected.
BOOT from a clean non-infected DOS system disk.
Use FORMAT.COM from this disk to make a new
formatted data disk - DON'T USE ANY FILES or
UTILITIES ON YOUR HARD DISK if your system is
infected.
2. DO NOT place the VIRUS TERMINUS files and
COMMAND.COM into a subdirectory when performing
a floppy installation. Put them in the ROOT. OK
to place SCAN, CLEAN, etc. in a subdirectory.
3. Copy McAfee Associates and VIRUS TERMINUS
files to your floppy disk. Copy your shell
or file utility to the disk if there's room.
<IMPORTANT!> ---> 4. Copy COMMAND.COM to the disk.
* 5. Place this disk in either DRIVE #A or #B
TYPE the following lines pressing <ENTER>
after each to run TERMINUS:
A:
cd\
vt40B.exe
or
B:
cd\
vt40B.exe
6. Select #5, MAKE VCLEAN.LST, at the MAIN menu.
7. Select F5 - CHANGE DEFAULTS at the MAIN menu.
Change appropriate default entries. DO NOT
select or enter a path/directory located on
your hard disk! DO NOT save your defaults to
the hard disk if you have one. Changing default
#1 - TERMINUS PROGRAM DIR: to A:\ or B:\ will
help to insure that the defaults are not saved
to the HARD DISK.
8. ***** NOW write protect the disk! *****
9. Select #1 or #2 at the MAIN menu. Press F7
Self-Test to make sure installation did
not infect your work disk.
*****
The CURRENT DRIVE and SUBDIRECTORY must be the location of the
VIRUS TERMINUS file set. Failure to change over to the TERMINUS
drive and subdirectory will cause you to have to re-configure
and modify the default table each time you run the program. The
default table is always loaded in from the current drive and
subdirectory at the time you startup The VIRUS TERMINUS.
You may create a DOS BATCH file with the loading sequence
previously outlined in HARD DRIVE step #3 and FLOPPY step #5
installation instructions.
*****
* Start your machine up (BOOT) from a clean non-infected floppy DOS
disk if your system is infected. Disinfect and then run the VIRUS
TERMINUS from your hard disk. The report function of SCAN/CLEAN will
not work because your floppy disk will be write protected!
Please read VT40B.DOC for more detailed installation instructions.
***** UPDATE INFORMATION VERSION 4.0B *****
1. VIRUS FACT SHEETS are now available for virus infectors found in
the McAfee Associates VIRLIST.TXT file. Each display provides
information such as virus proper name, known characteristics,
areas of damage, which McAfee Associates disinfector to use, etc.
Refer to VT40B.DOC for more information.
1. SCAN/CLEAN options user interface was re-designed. Options are
now listed with brief onscreen explanations to guide users
through proper selection. Help for each switch is still available
by pressing F1.
2. SCAN/CLEAN FILES functions have been made infinitely faster by
utilizing the @filename SCAN/CLEAN option. Options are stored in
the file named OPTIONS.$$$ which SCAN or CLEAN reads to get the
file list and work options. OPTIONS.$$$ is a temporary file created
in the VIRUS TERMINUS disk / subdirectory. This submenu defaults to
ENTIRE subdirectory SCAN/CLEAN when the Terminus disk is write
protected.
3. File selection display for SCAN/CLEAN FILES operations now shows the
"seconds" time field. Certain virus/strains change this value.
4. /FAST options is directly implemented. Select "I. SKIP INSIDE PKLITE
and LZEXE FILES" option from the selection list. This also causes the
SCAN/CLEAN display to be abbreviated for faster operation. This option
is being used as a combination switch - skip insides and shorten
display output, etc.
5. /CERTIFY options is implemeted in the VALIDATION submenu. Users should
turn reports on to capture the list of files that do not have the
validation code added.
6. The default table was simplified. The /SP, /FR and /EXT, /NOBREAK, and
/NOPAUSE options now function from the default table. All other
options are set from the submenus only. Separate subdirectory locations
are now allowed for VIRLIST.TXT and VALIDATE.COM .
7. The MAKELIST v1.2 utility searches any subdirectory specified as the
home of VIRLIST.TXT in the default table for that file. VCLEAN.LST
is still placed in the TERMINUS directory.
8. Support BBS is now online. Dial 908-206-1346 using No Parity, 8 Data
bits and 1 Stop bit terminal setting. Hours of operation are 6 PM to
6 AM Eastern Standard Time ( EST ).
9. Further error trapping added to The Virus Terminus operation of
SCAN/CLEAN when using a write protected floppy. Users should be aware
that the REPORT function of SCAN/CLEAN will not work on a write
protected floppy and the SCAN/CLEAN FILE(s) submenu of The Virus
Terminus will only SCAN/CLEAN entire subdirectories because of the
need to create a response file named OPTIONS.$$$ on your disk.
Individual and/or job batch selection of files is fully functional
when running from a hard disk or floppy without write protect.
You should write protect your floppy disk in the event you are trying
to disinfect an already contaminated system. Once your hard drive is
disinfected you may return to full operation by running The Virus
Terminus from that drive.
10. Version 4.0B allows the user to run from either DRIVE #A floppy or
DRIVE #B. Make sure you copy COMMAND.COM to your floppy disk. DO NOT
install COMMAND.COM or the Virus Terminus files to a subdirectory
on your floppy. Put them in the ROOT.
11. Versions 3.0x and 4.0x of The Virus Terminus automatically send SCAN
or clean the /M option when MEMORY SCAN is switched ON! This forces
memory search for ALL resident type virus/strains rather than just
critical ones.
12. A start-up SELF-TEST option has been added. Users should add a /T
command line option when running The Virus Terminus. See the special
note below on how to combine this option with /M and /S.
13. Documentation revised to include instructions on new options, etc.
14. Changed the MEMORY AVAILABLE message displayed when a user presses
<CTRL-F> at any menu/submenu to read "LARGEST CONTIGUOUS RAM BLOCK
AVAILABLE" . The figure displayed is only a guide to help users
determine if their shell or other utility will have enough space
to operate. It does not necessarily refer to the total conventional
memory(i.e. 640Kb, 512Kb, etc.) minus the sum of memory all programs
you are running actually occupy. The number of KB FREE refers to the
largest contiguous or adjacent set of RAM locations available and
therefore in a general sense also refers to the size of the largest
executable program that may be launched from the Virus Terminus.
(code, data, etc.) Read VT40B.DOC for more information.
15. Added further error traps for program Floppy operations and
installation.
16. Main file vtec40x.exe was renamed to vt40B.exe to help eliminate
possible installation problems with SFX distributor files.
Please take the time to read the INSTALLATION procedures found
in VT40B.DOC . The TERMINUS is error trapped for MISSING program
files(SCAN.EXE, CLEAN.EXE etc.) and will refuse to perform functions
associated with the required files if they don't exist in the DEFAULT
specified subdirectories. REMEMBER: TERMINUS is not a stand alone
utility, it is a SHELL for SCAN, CLEAN, and VALIDATE.
VTEC40B
1. A bug fix added to VTCF1.EXE which contains the VIRUS FACT SHEET
routines. The first character of the disinfector utility was not
being written to screen or printer when virus info was displayed.
( lean-Up instead of Clean-Up etc.)
2. /CHKHI is forced on during Self-Test. Self-Test WILL function
properly on all machines regardless of the total RAM available.
3. Modified PRINTDOC.BAT file to include printing of README.1ST file.
4. Added start-up error message "UNABLE To Find COMMAND.COM ..." Terminus
determines a floppy installation by looking at default table entry #1
for an "A:" or "B:" substring. If detected Terminus will ONLY look for
COMMAND.COM in the floppy ROOT directory. Floppy installation requires
that you place the correct DOS version of COMMAND.COM in the floppy
ROOT directory.
COMMAND.COM is used for launching DOS BATCH files.
COMSPEC is used to locate of COMMAND.COM when running Terminus from
a hard disk. If COMSPEC is NUL because of no PATH(autoexec.bat) and/or
no SHELL(config.sys) statement Terminus will assume COMMAND.COM is
located in the C: ROOT directory.(hard disk installation only!)
5. Vtec40B tested with SCAN86-B and CLEAN86.
The VIRUS TERMINUS v4.0 first checks for missing programs before
you reach the main menu screen. A check for missing programs is also
performed each time you exit the default area and return from your
SHELL or file utility.
The first time you run VT40B.EXE make sure you go no further
than the MAIN MENU before you press F5 and make the needed additions
or corrections to the DEFAULT TABLE.
*****
Version 4.0 has TWO HELP keys, F10 which is still displayed
in the lower function menu bar and F1. Each key produces the same
result. This addition was made for new users who are normally
familiar with pressing F1 for HELP in certain other programs.
*****
THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c) achieves optimum performance when it is
installed and run from a hard drive. However, it is best to run the
VIRUS TERMINUS from a floppy if your computer system is known to be
infected. THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c), SCAN.EXE, CLEAN.EXE, VALIDATE.COM
and VIRLIST will all fit on a high capacity floppy if you follow
the installation instructions ABOVE or in the program documentation
file VT40B.DOC . (720k , 1.2 Meg, 1.44 Meg disk size)
***** 360Kb Disk Installation:
This version of The Virus Terminus(VT40B.EXE, VTCF1.EXE, VTCF2.EXE,
VTCF3.EXE) plus COMMAND.COM, SCAN, CLEAN, VALIDATE and VIRLIST.TXT
will fit on a 360Kb DSDD disk. There is enough room to fit all files
on a NON-boot disk with a 70Kb space left for temporary files and
SCAN /CLEAN reports. (approx. 70Kb free non-boot disk DOS 3.3 and
approx. 30K free DOS 5.0)
*****
IF you wish to check SCAN, CLEAN, VALIDATE and the entire Virus
Terminus program set each time you start-up add the following command
line option:
A> VT40B.EXE T (press ENTER)
This option will the check the programs indicated and memory for any
possible virus infections prior to running The Virus Terminus. You
will have an option to quit if an infection is found. SCAN.EXE and
CLEAN.EXE also perform a SELF TEST each time they are executed by
The Virus Terminus program.
*****
IF you have IBM CGA C80 mode compatibility(you can run programs
which require color 80 column text IBM CGA mode) but utilize a money
saving green, amber, white etc. monochrome display, start TERMINUS
like this:
A> VT40B.EXE M (press ENTER)
This will eliminate window background colors and adjust certain other
textcolors so you may be able to SEE all menu selects, prompts, etc.
The mouse will still function if you have one. NOTE: TRUE IBM MDA
monochrome display cards are auto-detected and there is no need for
the extra parameter when starting TERMINUS.
*****
If you have an older cga adapter and experience "snow" during
screen updates you may invoke the /S command line parameter:
A> VT40B.EXE S (press ENTER)
The /S, /M and /T commmands may be combined.Don't put a space between
the two characters:
A> VT40B.EXE MST (press ENTER)
