  1.                       HyperText VSUM X9201 READ_ME.1ST

  3.      With the June, 1991 release, the Virus Information Summary List
  4. was converted from its original ASCII list format into a custom,
  5. hypertext database format.  With the new format, the product name has
  6. been changed to HyperText VSUM.  The previous ASCII list product has 
  7. been discontinued, and will no longer be updated.  
  8.  
  9.      Why the change to a hypertext database?  The original ASCII format
  10. had become extremely large and unwieldy, it was difficult for most
  11. people to effectively use.  Printing also had become a problem unless one
  12. had a very high speed laser printer.  More importantly, the information
  13. presented in the ASCII version was never really intended to be read
  14. sequentially as a book, but instead to be a reference book or 
  15. encyclopedia.

  17.      The hypertext database version, HyperText VSUM, solves 
  18. these problems.  There is no longer a need to print out the entire 
  19. document in order to be able to quickly locate a virus entry.  Individual
  20. virus entries, once selected by the user, can be printed by pressing
  21. F4.  HyperText VSUM also supports direct links between related
  22. viruses and theor individual virus entries.  The Common Name Cross 
  23. Reference from the ASCII version has been linked to allow direct access to
  24. the virus entries by the common names.  Four additional cross references
  25. were initially added in the Appendices section: Length Cross-Reference and
  26. Origin Cross-Reference on the Appendices menu, as well as Boot Sector
  27. Infectors and Stealth & Sub-Stealth Viruses via the Viral Type
  28. Cross-Reference selection on the Appendices menu.  Additional cross-
  29. references have been added as well, also located on the Appendices menu.
  30. Virus entry format information can be found on the Appendices menu under
  31. the selection "Virus Entry Fields".

  33.      HyperText VSUM is easy to use.  Unzip your distribution file into
  34. a directory on your hard disk, using PKUnZip version 1.10.  Once unzipped,
  35. type VSUM at the system prompt and press enter.  The logo screen for
  36. HyperText VSUM will be displayed.  Press any key or the right mouse button
  37. to go to the Main Menu.  Pressing F1 will then present a four page tutorial
  38. on the general display engine features.  Selecting the Using VSUM entry on
  39. the Main Menu will walk the user through looking up four different
  40. viruses via different features of HyperText VSUM.

  42.      Please note that while the colors in HyperText VSUM can be altered
  43. by the user, changed color attributes will be stored in the
  44. VSUMX database.  It will not be possible for you to return to the 
  45. exact original colors.  It is also highly suggested that users backup
  46. the VSUM.EXE program on a diskette and write-protect it.  If you should
  47. become infected, it ensures a clean copy to recover from.

  49.      The McAfee Associates' public domain VALIDATE program and its 
  50. documentation has been included with the VSUMX distribution file,
  51. VSUMX201.ZIP.  The Validate values for the VSUM engine and the VSUMX
  52. database are:

  60.      If the values returned by Validate with your copy of HyperText VSUM
  61. do not match the above, do not execute it as the program or database has
  62. been altered.

  64.      Additionally, VSUMX201.ZIP has been archived with the verification
  65. feature of PKZip.  When you unzip this version, the following verification
  66. information should be displayed:

  70.      If this information does not match your copy, please be aware that
  71. the archive file may have been altered or corrupted.

  73.      All released versions of McAfee Associates' VCopy program, up to
  74. and including the current V82 release, have a known false alarming
  75. problem when they are used to copy the VSUMX.H! file.  VCopy may falsely
  76. indicate that VSUMX.H! is infected with the 1701 Cascade Virus [170x].
  77. This is a true false alarm, and has been reported to McAfee Associates
  78. and myself numerous times.  Unfortunately, it is not possible for it to
  79. be fixed within the VSUM linked hypertext database file.  Hopefully,
  80. future versions of VCopy will have this false alarm problem fixed.
