Introduction
------------
VShell was first written as a hebrew shell for McAfee Associates anti-
virus programs to be distributed in the Israeli 32Bit Magazine.
During the time VShell was developed and today it's the most powerful
shell for the famous McAfee SCAN and CLEAN utilities. It also provides
a good interface for the VIRLIST contained in the SCAN/CLEAN packages
and to Patricia M. Hoffman's virus information summary list known as
VSUM.
System Requirements
-------------------
Vshell requires DOS version 3.00 or above in order to run correctly.
Vshell needs about 130K of free memory to itself, plus the memory
needed for SCAN/CLEAN. (About 200-240K free memory is needed for
SCAN84).
It is best to run Vshell with at least 512K free RAM. It is also
recommended that Vshell will run after booting from a clean system
diskette with no resident programs (TSR) loaded.
VShell 2.01 works with SCAN and CLEAN programs from version V84 or
newer. It will not work correctly, or even not at all with earlier
versions.
Validation
----------
To check the integrity of the programs in the VShell package, you may
use McAfee's VALIDATE utility. The output of the Validate program
should match the following:
File Name: VSHELL.EXE
Size: 49,942
Date: 1-29-1992
File Authentication:
Check Method 1 - 4994
Check Method 2 - 144B
File Name: VSETUP.EXE
Size: 25,830
Date: 1-29-1992
File Authentication:
Check Method 1 - 3955
Check Method 2 - 1BC9
File Name: VIRINFO.EXE
Size: 25,481
Date: 1-29-1992
File Authentication:
Check Method 1 - 4DE2
Check Method 2 - 0B70
If you get different results - Don't use the program!
Installation
------------
As you start the VShell installation proccess, you must make sure that
SCAN.EXE, CLEAN.EXE and VIRLIST.TXT are on your path. Run the VSETUP
program to configure VShell to your needs and to compile the Virlist.
After the setup you can start VShell by typing VSHELL at the DOS
prompt and pressing ENTER.
The fastest way to run VSETUP with the /AUTOSETUP command line
parameter. This will force VSETUP to create a default configuration
file for VSHELL and to automaticaly compile the VIRLIST.TXT.
Note that all output files will be created in the current directory
and any previous configurations will be ignored.
You may run VSETUP without any command line parameter to custom VShell
to your needs.
NOTE: If you are upgrading from previous version of VSHELL, you must
remove the old VSHELL.CFG from the path. The current VSHELL.CFG
is not compatible with any previous version.
However, you may run VSETUP /AUTOSETUP to ignore these files.
VSETUP /AUTOSETUP will create all VShell files in the currect
directory.
Using Vshell
------------
After running Vshell from the DOS prompt, a menu will be displayed,
and you then may select any desired option by using the numeric arrow
keys or a mouse. Each of the first two options will run either SCAN or
CLEAN.
The third option will display the last report generated by SCAN or
CLEAN, if it exist.
The fourth option will interface you to the VIRLIST.VSH that was
previusly created from VIRLIST.TXT contained in the SCAN package.
This interface will display all the available data on a specific virus
as it appears in the list.
When selecting a virus to see information about, you may either perss
ENTER to view the information from the VIRLIST or the '+' key to
interface directly to Patricia M. Hoffman's VSUM HyperText virus
information system. This option will not always work correctly due to
the fact that VIRLIST and VSUM sometimes have different names for the
same virus or the virus name is spelled differently.
The Fifth option lets you read the documentations of SCAN, CLEAN and
VShell from within. VShell looks for SCANVxx.DOC and CLEANxx.DOC in
the dos path. The xx in the filenames stands for the version number as
recognized by VShell from reading the Virlist.
The full screen viewer uses a disk swap file so this option will work
only on a non write protected drive, and there should be enough disk
space for the swap file. The swap file size may may vary according to
the size of the document currently displayed.
Vshell usage is self explanatory and the bottom line of the screen
contain instructions when they are needed.
When selecting a drive to clean/scan or a virus to display information
on, you may tag some options by using the <space> key to tag and
untag. This will allow you to scan/clean multiple drives or view
information on multiple viruses.
If you select a drive by pressing ENTER and not tagging it, VShell
will scan the disk for sub-directories, and will display a list of
them. If you want to run over one directory, just move the bar to it's
name and press ENTER. VShell will ask you if you like to scan all sub
directories of that directory.
If you press ESC from the directory list, the entire disk will be
scanned. When the Scan/Clean programs are running, you may press
Ctrl-C to abort their run.
If Scan found viruses and a report was created, Clean may use that
report during it's operation to perform an Auto-Clean operation.
The SCAN/CLEAN reports may be redirected to the local printer by
specifying "PRN" in the report filename.
When tagging Scan/Clean options, you may press F2 to continue. This
will cause VShell to save the current tags to VSHELL.CFG, and these
tags will be used on the next run of VShell, until they are changed.
... Have fun, and a clean PC.
Errors
------
During the execution of SCAN and CLEAN some errors may accrue.
VShell will display numeric error codes. These are error codes you
might see from time to time:
Error 2 = File not found
Error 3 = Path not found
Error 5 = Access denied
Error 8 = Not enough memory
All other errors (if any) are internal to VShell.
Warranty
--------
None! Whatsoever!
Read SUPPORT.DOC for more information.
VShell was last tested with ViruScan package v86.
