  16. THE MICHELANGELO VIRUS
  17.  
  18. Fast becoming one of the most publicized viruses, the Michelangelo virus 
  19. has been the been the subject of much media attention in the last few 
  20. months.  Several hardware and software companies have unknowingly 
  21. shipped products infected with Michelangelo, most notably Leading 
  22. Technology and it's Leading Edge computers.  First discovered in 
  23. Scandinavia last year, the Michelangelo virus is now widely spread 
  24. throughout the world.  According to one source, as many as five million 
  25. PCs may be infected with the virus, 500,000 of which are in the United 
  26. States.  On March 6, the birthday of the Italian Renaissance painter and 
  27. sculptor, the Michelangelo virus will format the hard disks of infected 
  28. systems by overwriting them with random characters from system memory.
  29.  
  30. How does the virus work?  The Michelangelo virus works by quietly hiding 
  31. in a computer's boot sector and memory and infecting all disks the computer
  32. uses.  The virus goes into memory the first time the user attempts to start
  33. the computer with an infected disk.  Once in memory, Michelangelo infects 
  34. diskette boot sectors as diskettes are accessed and the hard disk 
  35. partition table as files are accessed on the system's hard disk.  On 
  36. Michelangelo's birthday, March 6, the data on the hard disks of all 
  37. infected systems will be irretrievably damaged.

  39. The Michelangelo-specific Special Edition of Central Point Anti-Virus 
  40. detects and removes the Michelangelo virus and will restore the hard 
  41. disk partition table to its original state.  If, however, the virus is 
  42. not removed and activates on March 6, the data will be unrecoverable.

  46. USING THE SPECIAL EDITION OF CENTRAL POINT ANTI-VIRUS
  47.  
  48. To detect and remove the Michelangelo virus follow these steps:
  49.  
  50.  
  51. 1.  From the directory the files are located in type:
  52.  
  53.      CPAV <enter>
  54.  
  55. A dialog box displays with information about this Special Edition of 
  56. Central Point Anti-Virus.
  57.  
  58. 3.  Choose OK
  59.  
  60. NOTE:  If the window is not displayed correctly on your computer, type 
  61. CPAV /video to get help on the video command-line.
  62.  
  63. 4.  Choose Detect & Clean.
  64.  
  65. A progress bar displays showing the percentage of directories and files 
  66. in directories that have been scanned.  The path line lists each 
  67. directory and file as it is scanned.  Viruses are listed in the 
  68. information area as they are found and cleaned.  The program, however, 
  69. does not stop when it finds viruses.

  71. You can interrupt the scan at any time by pressing Esc.

  73. If the Michelangelo or Friday the 13th virus is detected, Central Point 
  74. Anti-Virus automatically cleans (removes) it and updates the Last Action 
  75. Taken information.

  77. After the entire drive is scanned, the Viruses Detected and Cleaned 
  78. window displays showing how many and what type of disks and files were 
  79. checked for the presence of viruses, how many infections were found, the 
  80. number of files or disks that were cured of infection, and the time it 
  81. took to scan the drive.

  83. When you finish looking at the report, choose Continue to return to the 
  84. main window.

  86. 5.  Scan each drive on your computer by choosing Select new drive, 
  87. selecting a drive, and choosing Detect and Clean.

  89. 6.  Create a directory on your hard disk and copy all the files from the 
  90. Central Point Anti-Virus Special Edition disk to that directory.

  92. You can now explore the variety of other features available in Central 
  93. Point Anti-Virus.  For information about features of the program, press 
  94. F1 at any time.
