Wolf Cheat Trojan
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A "cheat" file for Castle Wolfenstein 3-D, WLFCHEAT.ZIP, is currently
circulating on some bulletin boards. Allegedly written by John M.
Silverman, no stated address, the program offers to enhance saved
games automatically.
Instead, it "automatically" wipes out the boot sector of the drive and
trashes the File Allocation Table.
The program is written in Turbo Pascal and, from initial examination,
appears to contains sufficient code to replicate. However, attempts
to persuade WLFCHEAT to infect other files were unsuccessful, and the
program is being classified as a Trojan.
The ZIP file contains two files; a 548-byte text file, WLFCHEAT.TXT,
and a 14,784-byte executable, WLFCHEAT.EXE, as shown below:-
On execution, WLFCHEAT.EXE becomes memory resident (a TSR), occupying
18,160 bytes of memory at the next available memory address, and hooks
interrupt vectors 00, 05, 08, 09, 13h, 16h, 25h, 26h, and 28h.
When triggered, disk damage is virtually instantaneous.
No virus scanner detects anything amiss with WLFCHEAT.EXE, but the Trojan
does contain the text string "WoLfIe" at offset 3863h in the file.
