  18.   Multi-User Paradox has been successfully installed on a PC-
  19.   MOS/386, so that multiple partitions have access to shared files
  20.   with full table and record locking.  The following is the process
  21.   to do this.  The system seems to work fine for interactive
  22.   Paradox or simple scripts.  However, attempting to run a complex
  23.   PAL application under PC-MOS crashes the system.  Therefore, it
  24.   is not recommended to develop any ambitious applications under
  25.   PC-MOS until you have thoroughly tested it.
  26.  
  27.   The key ingredients of success are:
  28.  
  29.      1.  Purchase as many copies of Paradox as the number of
  30.          simultaneous sessions you intend to have.  You will
  31.          install only one copy, but you will need to supply Paradox
  32.          with all the serial numbers.
  33.  
  34.      2.  Set up a system of public and private directories and
  35.          Paradox.CFG files, as described in the Paradox Network
  36.          Administrator's Guide.
  37.  
  38.      3.  Run the NUPDATE program to set up the Paradox Network
  39.          environment.
  40.  
  41.      4.  Include the $NETBIOS.SYS driver in the PC-MOS Config.Sys
  42.          file.  Paradox only supports multi-user systems that
  43.          conform to the MS-DOS NETBIOS convention, and PC-MOS
  44.          supports multi-user Paradox ONLY because of this NETBIOS
  45.          driver!
  46.  
  47.      5.  Always start Paradox from a private directory, and always
  48.          use the "-SHARE" option on the Paradox command line.
  49.  
  50.   The following procedures allow one to successfully install
  51.   multi-user Paradox under PC-MOS.  The purpose of the procedure is
  52.   to install PC-MOS to boot from a floppy, while leaving DOS on the
  53.   hard disk.  The end result is a copy of Single-User Paradox on
  54.   the C: drive for use by DOS, and a Multi-User copy of Paradox on
  55.   the D: drive for use by PC-MOS.  The procedure sets up users in
  56.   three PC-MOS tasks:  Task 0 = "Chris", Task 1 = "Mark", Task 2 =
  57.   "Kathryn."  Your configuration will probably be different.
  58.   Hopefully you will be able to adjust the steps below to match
  59.   your configuration requirements.

  84.   Before you start, you will need three copies of the Paradox
  85.   package.  You will only be installing one of them, but you will
  86.   need the serial numbers from all three.

  88.   Version 1.02 of PC-MOS/386, Single-User edition, which lists for
  89.   $195.00, was used to test everything explained here.
  90.  
  91.   Steps 1 through 14 can be conducted under either DOS or PC-MOS,
  92.   except for the MSYS command in step 12, which is a PC-MOS
  93.   command.  Steps 15 and 16 are PC-MOS steps.

  95.      1.  Create the following subdirectories on drive D:
  96.          D:\PARADOX
  97.          D:\PARADOX\PRIV0
  98.          D:\PARADOX\PRIV1
  99.          D:\PARADOX\PRIV2

  102.      2.  Install Paradox into D:\PARADOX either by copying from
  103.          C:\PARADOX or by installing from diskette using A:INSTALL
  104.          D:

  106.      3.  Copy two files from the Paradox installation diskette into
  107.          D:\PARADOX:  NUPDATE.EXE and ASCII.SOR.
  108.  
  109.      4.  Change directory to D:\PARADOX.
  110.  
  111.      5.  Run NUPDATE.  Use it to add serial numbers to set the
  112.          total count to 3.  For "Type of Network," answer "6
  113.          (other)" For "Directory for Paradox.Net," reply
  114.          "D:\PDOXDATA".
  115.  
  116.      6.  Run PARADOX CUSTOM.  Perform these options to set up the
  117.          configuration for the first user:
  118.  
  119.             a.  Video/DisplayColor/DarkBlue
  120.  
  121.             b.  SetDirectory:  D:\PDOXDATA

  123.             c.  Network/SetPrivate:  D:\PARADOX\PRIV0

  125.             d.  Network/UserName:  i.e. CHRIS

  173.      8.  Create a batch file, PDXSHARE.BAT, in D:\PARADOX, with one
  174.          line in it:
  175.               PARADOX -SHARE
  176.          When running under PC-MOS, use this batch file, or the "-
  177.          share" switch, whenever you start up Paradox.

  179.      9.  Copy the contents of the two PC-MOS diskettes onto a
  180.          single high-density floppy.  This will become the PC-MOS-
  181.          for-Paradox boot diskette.  Use the PC-MOS command "MSYS
  182.          A:" to install the PC-MOS operating system onto the
  183.          diskette.

  185.     10.  Leave the PC-MOS-for-Paradox boot diskette in the A: drive
  186.          for the next few steps.

  188.     11.  Add three lines to the A:CONFIG.SYS file on the diskette:

  241.     14.  To start Paradox, type in "PDXSHARE".  You can use
  242.          <Alt><0>, <Alt><1>, and <Alt><2> to switch between tasks
  243.          and start Paradox in each task.

  245.     15.  It is important that each user start Paradox only from
  246.          their preassigned directory:
  247.          User 0 must start from D:\PARADOX\PRIV0
  248.          User 1 must start from D:\PARADOX\PRIV1
  249.          User 2 must start from D:\PARADOX\PRIV2
  250.  
  251.     16.  Never start Paradox with simply the "PARADOX" command.
  252.          Always use the PDXSHARE.BAT file, or the "-SHARE" option.
