THE ANSWER MAN
The Answer Man sends a free, one hour compilation tape to Lee Volkov
of LV Sound in Richfield, OH for his question:
"What is the difference between Wolfram's one hour and two hour
tapes?"
Besides the length, a lot, Lee! Each one hour tape Wolfram Video issues
comes on a large hub cassette which means the fastest access time and
easy navigating for quick cuing. Two seconds of black is placed
between each selection, with clip times and a running time for the tape.
Many VCRs can locate exact clock times on a tape so the running time
makes cuing a breeze. Our two hour tapes are all pre-mixed for two
solid hours! You can play them straight through, use them at band
breaks or mix in for several songs and mix back out. Both the one
hour and two hour tapes come in different music formats and are all
recorded in the professional SP speed with superb Hi-Fi audio. The
label also gives you artist, song title, record label and BPMs. The
combination of technology and Wolfram Video tapes makes video music a
snap at any location!

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF ENTERTAINMENT
1) Treat your DJ very well. A DJ can either make you a lot of
money...or loose you a lot of money. The "right" person for your
location is hard to find so work to develop and keep these important
people.
2) The older a person becomes the more they crave VARIETY. If you
are playing to an adult audience remember that they need to hear a
wider selection than the younger set.
3) Read and CONTROL your crowd. Learn to see what they respond
to and adjust your programming accordingly. Watch the room and learn
to recognize any possible trouble. If tempers flare, slow things down
musically.
4) People LOVE RECOGNITION. Learn to use the mic effectively and
congratulate those celebrating special events or those doing something
special on the floor. People love to hear their name. Learn and
remember as many names as possible.
5) Know your music...all kinds of music. Your music selection is like
a toolbox. Only if you know what each tool is for will you be able to
select the proper "tool" for the occasion.
6) Customer service is paramount. Acknowledge and play requests as
soon as possible. A major department store chain has the motto: "Give
the lady what she wants". Strive to let everyone know that you really
care that they have stopped at your rink.
7) Use the proper volume. Despite the fact that people may like
their music loud, they also enjoy conversing. Frequently the music
seems much louder on the floor than in the booth. Know the proper
volume level so that you can help encourage people to STAY.
8) There is a time to talk on the mic...and a time NOT TO TALK. If
you take the time to develop your own personal format by mapping out
what's going to happen during a shift, you can actually groom your
audience and train them when to listen.
9) Use the full resources available to you. To help, a subscription
to one of the industry publications that addresses DJs and music
programming is well worthwhile. They will often cover goods and
services that you might have otherwise missed.
10) Never take yourself too seriously.
