  97.                    THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF ENTERTAINMENT
  98. 1)    Treat your DJ very well.  A DJ can either make you a lot of
  99. money...or loose you a lot of money.  The "right" person for your
  100. location is hard to find so work to develop and keep these important
  101. people.
  102.  
  103. 2)    The older a person becomes the more they crave VARIETY.  If you
  104. are playing to an adult audience remember that they need to hear a
  105. wider selection than the younger set.
  106.  
  107. 3)    Read and CONTROL your crowd.  Learn to see what they respond
  108. to and adjust your programming accordingly.  Watch the room and learn
  109. to recognize any possible trouble.  If tempers flare, slow things down
  110. musically.

  112. 4)    People LOVE RECOGNITION.  Learn to use the mic effectively and
  113. congratulate those celebrating special events or those doing something
  114. special on the floor.  People love to hear their name.  Learn and
  115. remember as many names as possible.

  117. 5)    Know your music...all kinds of music.  Your music selection is like
  118. a toolbox.  Only if you know what each tool is for will you be able to
  119. select the proper "tool" for the occasion.

  121. 6)    Customer service is paramount.  Acknowledge and play requests as
  122. soon as possible.  A major department store chain has the motto: "Give
  123. the lady what she wants".  Strive to let everyone know that you really
  124. care that they have stopped at your rink.

  126. 7)    Use the proper volume.  Despite the fact that people may like
  127. their music loud, they also enjoy conversing.  Frequently the music
  128. seems much louder on the floor than in the booth.  Know the proper
  129. volume level so that you can help encourage people to STAY.

  131. 8)    There is a time to talk on the mic...and a time NOT TO TALK.  If
  132. you take the time to develop your own personal format by mapping out
  133. what's going to happen during a shift, you can actually groom your
  134. audience and train them when to listen.
  135.  
  136. 9)    Use the full resources available to you.  To help, a subscription
  137. to one of the industry publications that addresses DJs and music
  138. programming is well worthwhile.  They will often cover goods and
  139. services that you might have otherwise missed.

  141. 10)   Never take yourself too seriously.
