  10.   Welcome to the seventeenth issue of The Hack Report.  This is a series of
  11.   reports that aim to help all users of files found on BBSs avoid
  12.   fraudulent programs, and is presented as a free public service by the
  13.   FidoNet International Shareware Echo and the author of the report, Lee
  14.   Jackson (FidoNet 1:382/87.4).

  158.                                 Hoax Alert:
  159.  
  160.   Here is the test, devised by Tim Fitzgerald of 1:3800/18.0, to try if you
  161.   think you have managed to get a program called XTRATANK to work on your
  162.   system.  Follow these simple steps:
  163.  
  164.       1. Run CHKDSK and write down the free space it reports as free.
  165.       2. Do a DIR command and write down what XTRATANK reports.
  166.       3. Copy any text file to a new text file.
  167.       4. Repeat steps 1 and 2, and compare.
  168.  
  169.   You will see that XTRATANK reports that twice as much disk space is taken
  170.   up by the new text file.  Tim concludes that XTRATANK fools you into
  171.   thinking that it gives you more space by doubling what the DOS DIR
  172.   command reports.  Fortunately, it is still harmless.  Consider it a hoax
  173.   that doesn't work.

  197.                               The Trojan Wars
  198.  
  199. | Well, it was too good to last.  A possible dropper has appeared, as
  200. | relayed by The Hack Report's gateway to WildNet, Ken Whiton.  As usual,
  201. | this is one section you shouldn't skip: read on and see why.
  202.

  204. | A conversation between Tim Sawchuck and Jeff Simmons in the WildNet
  205. | VIRUSES_MN conference revealed the possible existence of an archive of
  206. | VPIC47 that contains the Dark Avenger virus, "split" so that no scanner
  207. | can pick it up.  For the record, the latest official version of VPIC is
  208. | v48C.  So, grab the latest release and you'll avoid this one.

  211.   Please be aware that the PKZip v2.0B hack reported in the hack
  212.   section of this report could be a Trojan.  According to the report
  213.   filed in the VIRUS_INFO echo by Fred Towner, the archive (an ARJ
  214.   archive, no less(!)) had these files in it:

  217.         UNKNOWN.NFO
  218.         MUSTREAD.COM (archived with PKLITE)
  219.         WATCHME!.EXE (archived with PKLITE)

  221.   Fred was wise enough not to try and run any of these programs, so
  222.   Trojan activity has not been confirmed.  Fortunately, the PKZ201 (and
  223.   PKX201) files appear to be nothing more than hacks of the 1.93 Alpha
  224.   release.  Some relief, but a hack is a hack.

  240.                   file called README!!.BAT).  Will try and format your
  241.                   hard drive - a volume label on your HD will thwart
  242.                   this one.  From Derek Vanmunster (1:229/418).

  244.   Obnoxious       "Tetris" clones for the Macintosh - actually droppers
  245.     Tetris        of the MBDFA virus.  Via Paul Ferguson (1:109/229)
  246.   Tetriscycle     in the VIRUS_INFO echo.
  247.   Ten Tile Puzzle

  249.   OCEAN.ZIP       From the BBS description: "Wonderful Game, Reward for
  250.   PLANTS.ZIP      the person who conquers it 1 time, Good luck, how does
  251.   RAINBOW.ZIP     30,000 bucks sound to you if you break the pattern, try
  252.                   this game, it is wonderful, waht a challenge, bet you
  253.                   can't break the pattern. $50, 000 if you do it twice."
  254.                   Actually a compiled batch file that tries to erase all
  255.                   files on your C: drive.  From Richard Dale (1:280/333).
  256.  
  257.   PSI3.ARJ        Passing itself as the LHA Archiver, version 3.00.  It
  258.                   destroys your partition table, boot sector, and parts
  259.                   of FAT 1 and FAT 2.  From Nemrod Kedem (2:403/138).

  261.   SCAN87.*        Suspected of Trojan activity, but not confirmed.  The
  262.   SCAN88.*        latest official release is SCAN89B.  Reported by
  263.   SCAN96.*        several.
  264.  
  265.   TGSEC16.*       Trojan version of Telegard Security Package - both
  266.                   executables in the archive will infect your system
  267.                   with the Dark Avenger virus, and the text files show
  268.                   you how to ease access to your system by hackers instead
  269.                   of prevent access.  By Scott Raymond, author of the
  270.                   real package (latest official version is TGSEC17.*).

  272.   ZAPPER15.*      PSI3, mentioned above, recommends an "antivirus"
  273.                   program called ZAPPER15.* to remove a virus called
  274.                   "PSQR".  ZAPPER15 is another Trojan which overwrites
  275.                   your hard disk's boot sector with random garbage data
  276.                   from memory.  It contains no viral code.  Also from

  378. | Last issue, Steve Baker (1:114/116) reported the existance of a new
  379. | version of the CompuShow GIF viewer, uploaded to his board as CSHOWA.ARJ.
  380. | Since then, more questions about this file, from Jack Cross (1:3805/13)
  381. | and Jeff Hancock (1:3600/7) were posted in the FidoNet International
  382. | Shareware Echo.  Your Hack Squad decided it was time to check this on the
  383. | CompuServe Graphics Forum.  I located the CSHOWA file, uploaded by the
  384. | author of the program.  The abstract of the file listed it as version
  385. | 8.44a.  I downloaded it and verified this version number.  So, as you can
  386. | see in the list of official versions in the Hacked Files section of the
  387. | report, version 8.44a of CompuShow is an official release.
  388.

  390. | Cimarron Mittlesteadt reports in the WildNet Shareware Conference that a
  391. | file called ALF.ZIP is a possible dropper of the Stoned virus.  However,
  392. | no other information was given.  If anyone has seen this or has any
  393. | information on it, please forward it ASAP.
  394.

  396.   A report has been relayed from Brian Hess (WildNet, via Ken Whiton)
  397.   concerning a program called TMFIX.ZIP.  The archive contains the files
  398.   TMFIX.EXE and TMFIX.DOC.  Brian states that McAfee Associates
  399.   determined the archive is "absolutely a Trojan file," and he thanks
  400.   them for their help in fixing "all problems with this file." I must
  401.   admit that I'm a bit lost on this one, and I can not confirm McAfee's
  402.   involvement with this archive.  If someone reading this has any inside
  403.   information that could fill in the gaps, please enlighten your pleading
  404.   Hack Squad.

  407. | As you can see above in the Pirated Commercial Software section,
  408. | Supaplex has been determined to be a commercial file.  According to
  409. | Dennis Matney (1:230/12), the game is by a company called Digital
  410. | Integration, LTD.
  411.  
  412.  
  413. | Last week, Harold Stein (WildNet) had asked, via Ken Whiton, to relay
  414. | that any games by Apogee with a number other than #1 in the filename
  415. | are usually not a shareware, but registered modules of the games in
  416. | question.  This week, he reports that there may be a second trilogy of
  417. | the Commander Keen series, numbered #4KEEN - #6KEEN, and that #4 may
  418. | have been released as shareware.
  419.  
  420. | Charles Jennings (1:382/32) has sent a README file from #4Keen that
  421. | confirms that #4 is a shareware release.  However, please be careful with
  422. | any Apogee game not numbered #1, however, since there are some pirated
  423. | modules floating around.  Be on the lookout, and double check any you
  424. | see.
  425.

  427.   BiModem is the subject this time, but the situation doesn't quite fit
  428.   into any of the other categories of this report.  A few users have seen a
  429.   version called BIMOD125.* floating around, and wondered if it was a hack.
  430.   Steve Baker (1:114/116.0) called the support BBS and verified your Hack
  431.   Squad's information: v1.25 is a closed beta.  Version 1.24 is the latest
  432.   public release.  This information was also verified by the Hack Squad (in
  433.   lurk mode over in the BIMODEM echo) through a message posted by Michael
  434.   Ingram (1:114/151).  In short, if you see BIMOD125, delete it - it's a
  435.   beta that shouldn't be out yet.

  438.   Yet another one that doesn't seem to fit anywhere is a Windows program
  439.   called WinSpeed.  Bill Eastman (1:382/87.12) relayed a message from Alan
  440.   Zisman (1:153/9) in the WINDOWS echo about this file, and Piyadaroon
  441.   Kalayanamit (1:382/87) quickly cleared the confusion.  Apparently, there
  442.   are _two_ different programs called WinSpeed: one is a commercial package
  443.   of Windows video drivers, which should not be posted for download on any
  444.   BBS.  The other is a small utility that will report your system speed
  445.   from within Windows, and is a legitimate shareware file.
  446.  
  447.   James Brown (1:266/22.0) has reported in the WINDOWS echo that the
  448.   shareware WinSpeed has been renamed to WINDSOCK.  According to James,
  449.   the author(s) took the original off of CompuServe, renamed it, and
  450.   resubmitted it.  Hopefully, this will ease the confusion, but there
  451.   _will_ be copies floating around under the old name.  So, be careful
  452.   with this one.  If you get a copy of the video driver file from
  453.   someone, delete it: it is not shareware.

  456.   I still have no further confirmation of MTG2400, reported by Zach Adam of
  457.   1:2200/103.  The description says this program will run a 2400bps modem
  458.   like a 4800bps modem, which sounds a bit like the MTE program listed in
  459.   the Pirated Commercial Software section.  Any information would be
  460.   appreciated.

  464.                                Clarification
  465.  
  466.   Len Hult (RIME, via Richard Steiner, 1:282/85), has relayed a message
  467.   from one of his users concerning the CREDITFX program that was previously
  468.   reported in the Hoax Alert section.  His user (no name given) said he had
  469.   not received his software by March 3, 1992, and the phone number of the
  470.   company (North Atlantic Publishing) did not connect.  However, the user
  471.   had received his software on or before April 25, 1992.  Rather than
  472.   continue to list this as a hoax, I have decided to print this
  473.   clarification.  Users should always be wary of any software that seems
  474.   "too good to be true," but this appears to be a legitimate program.

  478.                                 Conclusion
  479.  
  480.   If you see one of these on a board near you, it would be a very friendly
  481.   gesture to let the SysOp know.  Remember, they can get in just as much
  482.   trouble as the fiend who uploads pirated files, so help them out if you
  483.   can.

  488.   The intent of this report is to help SysOps and Users to identify
  489.   fraudulent files.  To this extent, I give credit to the reporter of a
  490.   confirmed hack.  On this same note, I do _not_ intend to "go after" any
  491.   BBS SysOps who have these programs posted for d/l.  The Shareware World
  492.   operates best when everyone works together, so it would be
  493.   counter-productive to "rat" on anyone who has such a file on their board.
  494.   Like I said, my intent is to help, not harm.  SysOps are strongly
  495.   encouraged to read this report and remove all files listed within from
