  8. ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL PUBLISHERS EXCHANGE...
  9.  
  10.     The International Publishers Exchange (IPE) is a non-profit international 
  11. organization staffed entirely by volunteers. Among its members are private 
  12. individuals, corporations and institutions. All are involved in some aspect of 
  13. electronic and print communications, such as desktop publishing, graphics, 
  14. printing, advertising, technical documentation, and more.

  16.     Anyone can join IPE, either as a casual user or active participant. The 
  17. goal is to create a "Users' Intelligence Network," where members may share 
  18. experiences, ask questions, and gain insight into the use of these powerful new 
  19. technologies.

  21.     Whether you are creating a church newsletter, developing a major corporate 
  22. brochure, or investigating the latest in multi-media, you will find PubNet 
  23. members more than willing to help and share their experiences. You are also 
  24. encouraged to help others in their publishing and communications efforts.

  27. ABOUT THE BBS NETWORK...
  28.  
  29.     Central to the achievement of IPE's goal is PubNet--a telecommunications 
  30. network linking bulletin board systems around the world. This network is based 
  31. on the same technology as the popular FidoNet EMail system. Messages and files 
  32. are distributed to participating PubNet BBSs on a daily basis. A message 
  33. entered on one of these boards is "echoed" to all other PubNet boards 
  34. throughout the world.

  36.     Key to PubNet are the various conferences, each dealing with a specific 
  37. aspect of PubNet or electronic printing and publishing. The current PubNet 
  38. conference list includes:

  40. INTROPUB       - Introduce yourself here and find out more about PubNet

  42. AUTOPUB        - Automatically generated network messages, file releases, etc.
  43. COREL          - Talk on Corel products, including but not limited to Draw!
  44. EPWG           - Electronic Publishing and Writing Group
  45. FONTS          - Installing and using fonts on any platform
  46. FRAME          - The FrameMaker program on both Mac and Sun platforms
  47. GRAPHIC_DESIGN - Analysis and commentary on publication design 
  48. HI_RES         - Discussions on high-res graphics such as Targa
  49. LASERMASTER    - Talk about LaserMaster's printers and controller cards
  50. LASERPUB       - Discussions on laser printers in DTP and related issues
  51. MACDTP         - Mac DTP echo shared with Fido-connected Mac boards
  52. PAGEMAKER      - Discussions of Aldus' PageMaker
  53. POSTSCRIPT     - Postscript printers and programming tips
  54. PRODUCTION     - Publishing and production issues
  55. PUB_ADS        - Commercial advertisements from publishing-related firms
  56. PUB_BUSINESS   - Discussions of the business side of publishing
  57. PUBNET         - PubNet administration
  58. PUBNEWS        - Publishing news and press releases
  59. QUARK          - Quark Xpress publishing software discussions
  60. RIME_DTP       - RIME network DTP conference
  61. SCAN           - Discussions of scanning and scanners on all platforms
  62. TECH_SUPPORT   - Technical support for DTP products
  63. TRAIN          - A forum for users of DTP training and the trainers themselves
  64. UNIX_PUB       - Publishing on UNIX platforms
  65. USERGROUPS     - Information exchange forum for DTP user groups
  66. VENTURA        - Ventura Publisher User Group coordination

  68.     Note: The above is the echo list as of 9/24/91. It is the intent of IPE and 
  69. PubNet to bring the best echoes to PubNet users. As part of this effort, some 
  70. of these echoes are experimental in nature. Others are shared with other 
  71. networks, including FidoNet and the RIME network. What this means is that this 
  72. list is, as they say, "subject to change without notice."

  79. THE PUBNET DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM (PDS)
  80.  
  81.     The second key in the PubNet operation is the PubNet Distributon System 
  82. (PDS), IPE's automated file distribution system. This system works just like 
  83. the message echoes: any PubNet PDS node can put a file into the system and it 
  84. will be automatically relayed to all other PubNet PDS nodes. When files are 
  85. received, they are automatically announced in the AUTOPUB conference.

  87.     At this writing, the file distribution system is currently undergoing a 
  88. major restructuring, with changes to current file area names and new areas 
  89. being added. The changes will eliminate confusion with other file distribution 
  90. networks, as well as providing a better organization for the files relayed.

  103. A FINAL NOTE...
  104.  
  105.     PubNet continues to grow with each passing month. We are continually 
  106. setting up hubs, testing links, and getting moderators for some of the newer 
  107. echoes, such as COREL. Boards noted with an asterisk in the accompanying 
  108. DTPBBSxx list are current participants in the IPE and PubNet. At this writing, 
  109. not all of the boards are connected for all of the echo conferences, but it is 
  110. hoped that those that aren't will be soon.
