  3.     With his broad smile and boy-next-door looks, former Ku
  4.  Klux Klan leader and Nazi sympathizer David Duke has leaped
  5.  from the radical right fringes to mainstream conservative
  6.  politics in less than 3 years.
  7.     Despite White House and Republican party attempts to bury
  8.  him with scorn, Duke has bounded into the biggest political
  9.  arena of all. He announced Dec 4 that he will challenge
  10.  President George Bush for the 1992 GOP presidential
  11.  nomination and hopes to run in primaries all over the
  12.  country.
  13.     In his hard-fought but losing campaign for Louisiana's
  14.  governorship this fall, Duke tried to distance himself from
  15.  more than 20 years of involvement with neo-Nazis, white
  16.  supremacist groups and the Klan, where he was a grand
  17.  wizard.
  18.     But his background gave an overtly racist edge to the
  19.  conservative Republican dogma he now espouses.
  20.     Duke, who is 41 but looks years younger, attacked welfare
  21.  mothers, "affirmative action" racial equality policies and
  22.  rising crime, which he blamed on the "welfare underclass."
  23.     He was trounced almost 2-1 in the Nov 16 Louisiana
  24.  governor's election by former Democratic Governor Edwin
  25.  Edwards, who had the benefit of nationwide bipartisan
  26.  support including denunciations of Duke by Bush.
  27.     But Duke carried 55 % of the white vote. Analysts
  28.  attributed his strong showing, in part, to Louisiana's bad
  29.  economic times. In 1990, Duke lost to Democrat J Bennett
  30.  Johnston for the US Senate, but took 44 % of the vote,
  31.  including 58 % of the white vote.
  32.     Duke is making it clear he is not about to quit the
  33.  national political stage.
  34.     Duke has even broadened his target-issues to include
  35.  opposition to immigration and to a proposed free trade
  36.  agreement with Mexico he said would "take jobs away from
  37.  Americans".
  38.     He converted to the Republican Party in 1988 after
  39.  running for president on the extremist Populist Party
  40.  ticket, whose members include neo-Nazis and skinheads.
  41.     Shortly after the switch, he won a seat in the Louisiana
  42.  legislature from a predominantly white New Orleans suburb.
  43.     Horrified party leaders deny he is a true Republican and
  44.  Bush has called him an "insincere charlatan.
  45.     Duke has chided the Republican party for refusing to
  46.  accept him at face value and says his newfound Christianity
  47.  grants him forgiveness for his "earlier intolerances".
  48.     "As a presidential candidate, I could bring a lot of
  49.  working people across this country" into the party, he says.
  50.     Duke's activism dates to the 1960s when New Orleans was
  51.  in the throes of desegregating its schools.
  52.     He was born in Tulsa, Okla, on July 1, 1950. His family
  53.  moved to New Orleans when he and his older sister were
  54.  young.
  55.     By age 17, he held full KKK membership. Later, at
  56.  Louisiana State University, classmates often heard him
  57.  preaching white supremacy and Nazi philosophy.
  58.     At 19, Duke was photographed in a Nazi uniform during a
  59.   1-man demonstration. The photo continues to haunt him.
  60.     "I was just a kid," he says. "Everyone has done something
  61.  at some time in their youth that they regret later."
  62.     In 1972, he married Chloe Hardin of West Palm Beach, Fla,
  63.  also a right-wing activist. They divorced amicably several
  64.  years later and his 2 teen-age daughters often appeared with
  65.  him during his campaigns.
  66.     His ex-wife is now married to Don Black, Duke's
  67.  handpicked successor when he left the Klan.
  68.     Duke began receiving national attention by traveling, in
  69.  Klan robes, to areas suffering racial tensions.
  70.     He injected himself into a furor over racial school
  71.  busing in Boston and later organized vigilante border
  72.  patrols in the Southwest US to keep out illegal immigrants
  73.  from Mexico.
  74.     In 1979, he was booted out of Britain for trying to
  75.  organize KKK chapters at Oxford and Cambridge universities.
  76.     That same year he resigned from the Klan.
  77.     Duke then founded the Natl Association for the
  78.  Advancement of White People. Its newsletter often blamed
  79.  Jews for world problems and attacked blacks as being
  80.  intellectually inferior to whites. He called it a white
  81.  civil rights group.
  82.     The NAAWP continued to operate from Duke's home--and he
  83.  remained its president--until 1990.
  84.     Duke says he won't run in New Hampshire's February
  85.  primary, but will use his campaign to disseminate his views
  86.  across the country.
