ADAPTEC SCSI SUPPORT
(This information is documented in the OS/2 2.0 README file installed
with the system.)
Device support for the following Adaptec SCSI adapters is shipped with
OS/2 2.0. When any of the following adapters is installed in a workstation,
its presence is normally detected automatically, and the appropriate
device support is subsequently installed. For reference, the names of the
device drivers that support each adapter are provided here:
SCSI Adapter Device Driver
or Interface filename
---------------------------------------------
Adaptec AIC 6260 AHA152X.ADD
Adaptec AHA 1510 AHA152X.ADD
Adaptec AHA 1520/1522 AHA152X.ADD
Adaptec AHA 1540/1542 AHA154X.ADD
Adaptec AHA 1640 AHA164X.ADD
Adaptec AHA 1740/1742/1744 AHA174X.ADD
NEWER DEVICE DRIVERS
Since OS/2 began shipping, enhancements and bug fixes have been made to
Adaptec's device drivers. These newer drivers are currently being tested
and will be included with the next official version of OS/2. If you
would like to try the latest BETA version for your host adapter do the
following:
If you were using IBM OS/2 v2.0 with the embedded .ADD drivers and you
want to replace the embedded .ADD with the new .ADD included with this
README.ADD file
1) Make a backup copy of the ADD files in \OS2 on your boot drive.
2) Copy the new ADD file for your host adapter to \OS2.
3) Reboot your computer.
If you want to install OS/2 2.0 and use the new drivers in place of the
ones that were included with OS/2.
1) Make a diskcopy (using DOS DISKCOPY or equivalent) of diskette #1 of
OS/2 2.0.
2) If you have an AHA-1520, AHA-1522, AHA-1510, or AIC-6260:
add the line BASEDEV=AHA152X.ADD to CONFIG.SYS on this new disk.
If you have an AHA-1540B, AHA-1542B, AHA-1540A, or AHA-1542A:
add the line BASEDEV=AHA154X.ADD to CONFIG.SYS on this new disk.
If you have an AHA-1640:
add the line BASEDEV=AHA164X.ADD to CONFIG.SYS on this new disk.
If you have an AHA-1740, AHA-1740A, AHA-1742A:
add the line BASEDEV=AHA174X.ADD to CONFIG.SYS on this new disk.
3) Copy the appropriate .ADD driver to this diskcopy of diskette #1.
4) Insert the NEW copy of diskette #1 when you are prompted
for diskette #1.
5) If you are installaing on a drive > 1GB do the following :
a) Make sure the entire drive is accessible to FDISK.
b) After you are told to remove the installation disk
and reboot your machine, remember to add the appropriate BASEDEV
line (from step 2 above) to the CURRENT CONFIG.SYS file on the drive
where you are installing OS/2. You must also copy the NEW ADD file
into \OS2 on your boot drive.
6) Make sure that the new .ADD driver is in the \OS2 subdirectory after
installation.
If you were using IBM OS/2 v2.0 with an MFM, RLL, ESDI, or IDE hard disk
drive and you now want to add support for Adaptec SCSI host adapter (s).
OR
If you are currently using an Adaptec host adapter and want to add support
for a second different Adaptec SCSI host adapter
1) Copy the appropriate .ADD file:
For an AHA-1520, AHA-1522, AHA-1510, or AIC-6260:
copy AHA152X.ADD to the \OS2 subdirectory
For an AHA-1540B, AHA-1542B, AHA-1540A, or AHA-1542A:
copy AHA154X.ADD to the \OS2 subdirectory
For an AHA-1640:
copy AHA164X.ADD to the \OS2 subdirectory
For an AHA-1740, AHA-1740A, AHA-1742A:
copy AHA174X.ADD to the \OS2 subdirectory
2) Add the line BASEDEV=xxxxxx.ADD to the config.sys file.
3) Reboot your computer.
USEFUL HINTS
Partitions do not have any size limitation, EXCEPT the boot partition
is limited to one gigabyte. It is MUCH BETTER to use HPFS on large
partitions : you will get faster access to your data and space will be
used much more efficiently.
The AHA152X.ADD has the following changes:
1) There is now support for more than 2 fixed disks attached to
a single host adapter.
The AHA154X.ADD has the following changes:
1) Problems accessing the floppy when there is a heavy load on the
SCSI bus have been eliminated. Please note that there will still be
problems reported during installation after disk #9 is inserted. The
installation of OS/2 2.0 does NOT use the Adaptec driver (it only
installs it); this must be fixed by IBM. The only work around for the
disk #9 problem is to wait until there are no more hard drive accesses
before retrying to use the floppy.
2) Hard drives larger than 1 GB are now supported.
The AHA174X.ADD has the following changes:
1) Interrupts can be shared when more than one host adapter is installed
in a machine and they are running in enhanced mode.
2) Hard drives larger than 1 GB are now supported.
