*** The Oakcreek C.C. ***
Located within Oakcreek Village, Sedona, Arizona
Course Designed by: R. T. Jones, Jr.
JNSE rendition by Paul Conrad, San Jose, Ca. AKA "Treefrog"
Sedona is located about 25 miles south of Flagstaff at the southern end
of lovely Oak Creek Canyon, one of Arizona's true showplaces. Lesser
known than that "other" canyon in the state, Oak Creek is more
intimate and every bit as enjoyable. Sedona itself sits in a basin
surrounded on three sides by splendid walls of red sandstone and numerous
named rock towers. It has been called the most beautiful setting in
the world for a town and I'd be hard-pressed to dispute that. This golf
course is situated in a development about five miles south of town
where rock towers such as the prominent Shiprock and Bellrock tower above
the golf course. While this is desert country this course is not one of
the cactus and sand-filled wasteland types, but a well-manicured layout
in a suburban setting.
** Dedication **
This re-creation of the Oakcreek course is dedicated
to my Uncle Kenneth, who lives in one of those homes
near the 12th fairway. Both he and I wish we were
still out playing on the courses, but unfortunately
neither of us are able to. Perhaps sharing this
version with some of his friends will rekindle
old golf friendships.
Paul
For JNSE, the course was laid out by copying a village map, then reducing it
to JNSE overhead size, making a transparency of that, and using that as a
screen overlay mask guide for building the plot. Thus, the layout of the
course is as accurate as possible. The course has four tee positions on
the scorecard, but two are men's and two ladies'. Since JNSE has three men's
positions and one ladies' I used the two mens tees and longest ladies and
added a championship tee back from the longest men's. This lengthens the
course out and makes it tougher. Yardages from the three tees are within
2-3 yards of the scorecard for pin position #1.
For those who wish to play the course as it exists in Sedona you might
want to use either the JNSE Pro or Mens tees. The shape of the fairways
is reasonably accurate although the slopes may not be in some places.
Some greens have the correct general slope but I did not have detail on
many of the greens. However, as a general rule this course's greens
and many fairways slope away from the high towers to the north. Like
the slope of the greens, the trees used are representative of what
is on the course but their location is more my imagination. The course
plays fairly open, and while there are more trees in JNSE than the real
course, they tend to be out of the area of normal play. Generally, trees
are used to compensate for some of the difficulties in translating a real
course for JNSE and are used to enhance the attractiveness of the course.
Key characteristics of the course are the splendid setting, the great
fourth hole view, the very large teeing areas, and the many houses perched
along the edges of the course. That strange little area near the 3rd tee
and the 5th green is a small desert garden with yuccas and other desert
plants. You'll see it on the overhead of several holes. Enough chatter,
enjoy the course. I think you'll find Oakcreek a "golfer-friendly"
course. I'm always thankful for any feedback you wish to offer
on any of my JN designs.

Special thanks go to Scott Chesney, Mark Willett, Lee Ritze,
Bob Polin and others were the original designers of some of
the trees, buildings, and other objects which have been
modified by me to fit this locale. The hole information signs are
as close to the real ones as I could build and the dark red trees are
originals for this course copied after the one I saw by the 10th tee.
Look for it on the 10th. Some holes were rotated a bit in the
routing to correct background views. Unfortunately, the resolution
of JNSE is not sufficient to include some of the Quail which are in
abundance - live, on the scorecard, and on the hole information signs.
