Every effort has been taken to provide the highest possible quality of
documentation with Sfware.  An unfortunate side-effect of these efforts is
that the process of printing the documentation has become slightly more
complicated than appears necessary at first.

One additional complication is the fact that Sfware comes in two flavors.
One flavor is a full-screen, menu-oriented shell (called SfShell) that
provides high-level access to the features of Sfware.  The other flavor is a
collection of command-line utilities that provide access to every nuance
possible with Sfware.  This approach was taken deliberately.  It means that a
different full-screen shell (perhaps one for Microsoft Windows) can be
written independently of the utilities.  And it means that the utilities can
be used in situations where an interactive program is inappropriate (to
download a collection of fonts every morning, for example).

Regardless of the flavor you choose, the documentation is distributed in two
LaserJet PCL format files.  The SFW???D1 archive contains the manual for the
shell flavor of Sfware and the SFW???D2 archive contains a manual for the
standalone utilities.  Most users will need only one manual.  Unless you are
incapable of running the shell (because you don't have a hard disk or enough
memory, for example), you should begin with the shell documentation and print
the utilities documentation only if you need or want to use the standalone
utilities.

There are two LaserJet PCL files in each of the documentation archives.  One
file contains all of the odd pages of the manual and one contains all of the
even pages.  The manual is designed to be printed like a book with odd and
even pages on alternate sides of each physical sheet.

The procedure that follows describes how to print the manual with two-sided
pages.  Some laser printer manufacturers recommend against feeding paper
through the printer twice.  Please consult the users guide for your printer
before you proceed.  Neither Small Planet Software nor Norman Walsh are
encouraging you to use your laser printer in a way that contradicts the
manufacturers suggested or recommended use.  If you cannot run pages through
your printer twice, simply print the even and odd pages seperately and
collate them together.

To print two-sided pages, proceed as follows:

1) Print the odd pages (either SFSHELLO.PCL or SFUTILSO.PCL).  If you are
   unsure how to print the pages, the following DOS command will work:

                COPY <file> /B PRN

   For example, "COPY SFSHELLO.PCL /B PRN" to print the odd pages of the
   shell documentation.

2) Remove the table of contents and the order form (these are the last two
   odd pages).

3) Reverse the order of the odd pages and turn the stack of pages over.  When
   you finish, you should have a stack of pages that looks like this:  the
   back of the title page should be on top, the next lower sheet facing you
   should be the back of the NO WARRANTY page, the next sheet should be the
   back of the Introduction, etc.

4) Place these pages into your printers paper tray with the blank side
   face-up and the top of the pages facing into the printer.

5) Print the even pages (either SFSHELLE.PCL or SFUTILSE.PCL).

6) Now, collate the pages into their proper order, insert the table of
   contents before the introduction, and bind the pages as you see fit.

Each archive also contains an unformatted, text version of the manual.
This manual can be used as an online reference or printed on any printer
that supports the IBM extended ASCII characters.  Special formatting
information (boldface, italics, graphics, etc.) is absent from the text
version of the manual so it should not be used as a substitute for "the
real thing".
