  20.                Welcome to PC:Project Printers!

  22.                We're doing it again -- a massive study of the PC
  23.           products our readers need to know about.  This is the
  24.           biggest one of all -- there are over 300 printers that work
  25.           with a PC, and we're going to review as many of them as
  26.           possible.  We've tried to get all of them, but all we can do
  27.           is get most of them -- besides, One Park is an old building,
  28.           and we're not sure if the floor would hold up.

  30.                As it is, we'll have around 150, so that's half of the
  31.           field.  Who knows, maybe we'll do it again next year and
  32.           fill in the blanks.  Of course, by then there'll be 500
  33.           printers to test!

  35.                You're probably wondering why you've received over
  36.           7,500 words (not including appendices) of advice on how to
  37.           test and evaluate each printer, and write a short (750 word)
  38.           article about it.  The reason is simple -- the project is
  39.           large, and we need you, along with an army of colleagues, to
  40.           write 150 articles!  They need to have some common format,
  41.           style and size or our readers will leave with a strong sense
  42.           of confusion and chaos -- exactly the impression about
  43.           printers that we're trying to relieve them of.

  45.                And it's not just the size.  PC compatible printers
  46.           come in all shapes and sizes (everything from a shoe box to
  47.           several cartons mounted on equipment pallets).  They all
  48.           need to be evaluated and written about on a consistent
  49.           basis.

  51.                For the same reasons we've asked you to come in to PC's
  52.           offices to do the testing -- sorry, it just has to be done
  53.           that way -- you can do the writing anywhere you want.  When
  54.           you leave you can take much of the literature and documenta-
  55.           tion away with you for your writing, but it'll have to be
  56.           returned when you're done.

  66.                Take some time to read through the methodology and
  67.           writing guide, and go over the appendices. The guide is
  68.           meant to be your "user manual" for the project, and you'll
  69.           want to bring it with you when you're here for testing.
  70.           It's probably too short (despite its bulk), but several of
  71.           us will be around to answer any questions you have while
  72.           doing the testing.

  74.                The appendices contain sample outputs of the test
  75.           programs and should give you a better idea of what's to be
  76.           accomplished during the testing.  The programs have been
  77.           modified somewhat since the appendices were produced (Craig
  78.           Stark proved to be a fussy Beta tester), but the basics of
  79.           what they do hasn't changed.

  83.           and doing the planning.  You can be certain PC's readers
  84.           will get a lot of beneficial information out of it.
