ID:SY DESQview: Changing the System Keys
Quarterdeck Technical Bulletin #196
by Russell Bell
last revision: 7 February 1992
The purpose of this document is to explain how to change your DESQview
system keys and why you may want to.
WHAT ARE THE SYSTEM KEYS?
DESQview uses five keys (or keystroke combinations) for its own purposes.
The most important system key is the DESQ key, the key used to bring up the
DESQview menu. It is the Alt key (used alone) by default. This in no way
interferes with using the Alt key in combination with other keys (Alt-S, for
example). The Alt key is used by DESQview only when it is pressed and
released without any other key being pressed.
DESQview intercepts the Ctrl-Alt-Del keystroke combination so that it
closes only the foreground window when it is pressed, instead of rebooting the
machine. This is so that if an application locks up and you use this
keystroke combination you will not reboot the whole computer, just the one
window.
DESQview moves the keystroke that reboots the whole system to Ctrl-Shift-
Del (using only the left shift key and the delete key on the numeric keypad).
The key used to bring up the DESQview menu that allows you to "learn" scripts
(keyboard macros) is Shift-Alt.
The key used to bring up DESQview's keyboard mouse is the Ctrl key, used
alone. This in no way interferes with the use of the Ctrl key in combination
with another key (Ctrl-X, for example). The keyboard mouse comes up only when
the Ctrl key is pressed and released without any other key being pressed. See
the "Keyboard Mouse" section of Chapter 3 of the DESQview manual for a
discussion of this feature.
CAN THE SYSTEM KEYS BE CHANGED?
If some program has a conflict with the use of any of these keys or you
prefer them to be assigned to other keys this can be done. The way to do it
is run the DESQview setup program (the batch file called SETUP.BAT in the DV
directory) or the Setup DESQview window in DESQview. (The "Setup DESQview"
window is not added to the DESQview Open Window menu by default, but you can
add it yourself using the Add a Program option.)
After starting the SETUP program, Choose "Enter" for Advanced Options at
the first menu, then, at the Advanced Options menu choose "K" for keyboard.
Then press the tab key six times to get to "Change system keys" and enter "y".
This screen will appear:
Key to Press Key(s) to Hold Down
Choices Key Which Alt Shift Ctrl
DESQ Key A,C,S,Q,0 A E D N N
Learn Key A,C,S,Q,0 A E D E N
"Keyboard Mouse" A,C,S,Q,0 C E N N D
"Reboot Window" D,0 D Either E D E
"Reboot System" D,0 D Keypad N L E
-------------------------------------------------
A = Alt E = Either N = Neither held down
C = Ctrl L = Left E = Either held down
S = Shift R = Right L = Left key held down
Q = SysRq R = Right key held down
D = Del B = Both keys held down
0 = Disabled D = Don't care
Next field Tab
Backup menu Esc
DONE Y
This is your opportunity to change the system keys. "Key to press" is
the key which is pressed and released. "Key(s) to hold down" are the key(s)
that must be held down while the key to be pressed is pressed and released.
If you enter "0" in the first field this feature is disabled. The other
choices for the first field are listed after the name of the function. The
choices for the first three are Alt, Ctrl, Shift, and SysRq. Note that SysRq
is implicitly a combination keystroke on many keyboards, requiring holding
down the Alt key to invoke it.
For Alt, Ctrl, and Shift the second field allows you to assign this
function to only one of the two keys, left or right, or leave it as either.
The "Key(s) to hold down" field must be filled in. NOTE: If the "Key to
be pressed" is Alt, Ctrl, or Shift then this key's field in "Key(s) to be held
down" MUST be set to "D" for "Don't care".
The "Reboot Window" and "Reboot System" "Key(s) to be pressed" must be
the Del key (or disabled). Which one to use is not changeable: You can
reboot the system only with the Del key on the numeric keypad. The "Key(s) to
be held down" may be changed.
NOTES
You can use the mouse to bring up the DESQview menu; this may tempt some
users to disable the DESQ key entirely. This is a bad idea because when an
application running in a DESQview window uses the mouse the mouse cannot be
used to bring up the DESQview menu.
Microsoft's "Windows" will not allow DESQview to see the Alt key if only
one of them (left or right) is specified. The "Which one?" field must be set
to either. Since Microsoft Windows uses the Alt key to bring up their menu
when the Alt key is pressed and released both the DESQview menu and the
Windows menu will come up (presuming that the Alt key is still the DESQ key).
You must press the Esc key twice to clear both menus to return to the
application. Although this is an inconvenience this does not cause DESQview,
Windows, or the program to work incorrectly.
The SysRq key is invokable only when the Alt key is depressed on some
keyboards.
If the Alt, Ctrl, or Shift key is chosen as the key to be pressed then
its field in "keys to be held down" must be set to "D" for "Don't care".
If DESQview is invoked with the "/ns" switch then the default settings
for System Keys are restored for that session.
The Tandy 1000 needs the Learn key changed to work in DESQview (perhaps
Ctrl-RightShift.)
EXAMPLE
Here is an example of how the "Change system keys" menu should look with
the DESQ key changed to the "Ctrl" key (pressed alone) and the "Keyboard
Mouse" disabled.
Key to Press Key(s) to Hold Down
Choices Key Which Alt Shift Ctrl
DESQ Key A,C,S,Q,0 C E N N D
Learn Key A,C,S,Q,0 A E D E N
"Keyboard Mouse" A,C,S,Q,0 0 E N N D
"Reboot Window" D,0 D Either E D E
"Reboot System" D,0 D Keypad N L E
-------------------------------------------------
A = Alt E = Either N = Neither held down
C = Ctrl L = Left E = Either held down
S = Shift R = Right L = Left key held down
Q = SysRq R = Right key held down
D = Del B = Both keys held down
0 = Disabled D = Don't care
Next field Tab
Backup menu Esc
DONE Y
SUMMARY
The default settings of system keys were chosen by Quarterdeck to be the
least intrusive. These days more programs are using the Alt key (PC Shell,
Microsoft Works) in isolation and may offer no option of changing this. Some
users may be troubled by their accidentally hitting and releasing the Alt (or
Ctrl) keys when attempting to execute a combination keystroke. You could just
prefer a different keystroke combination. These are reasons to change (or
disable) a DESQview system key.
If you have trouble after changing the system keys you should delete the
file "dvsetup.dvp" in the DV directory and run the DESQview Setup again.
Invoking DESQview with the "/ns" parameter will cause the defaults to be
restored and your changes to be ignored for this session of DESQview.
