  8.        Here is a quick look at what's  new and changed in version 1.8 of
  9.        DV  commander.  Read  this  file  if  you  are currently using DV
  10.        Commander to see how the changes might affect you.

  14.        * Menu separator lines
  15.        
  16.          Added the  %separator  special menu command which will insert a
  17.          seprartor line like those used in DESQview's own menus.
  18.          
  19.          Also changed the  menu window frame  slightly  to exactly match
  20.          the way the DESQview menus look.

  22.        * Menu highlight bar follows mouse 
  23.        
  24.          The highlight bar now tracks when the mouse is moved as it does 
  25.          in DESQview's own menus and panels.

  30.        * DIsable / ENable commands
  31.  
  32.          Added DIsable and ENable commands to control access to DESQview
  33.          menus. This  can be useful in  setting up a turnkey  system and
  34.          with games that insist on using your {DESQ} key.

  39.          Added an Execute  command that will let you  run any program in
  40.          its own DESQview window. This  command is very powerful. Please
  41.          see the documentation for details.

  44.        * Pre-emptive menus
  45.  
  46.          The sub-menus are now pre-emptive. This means that if you press
  47.          the menu selection letter before the  menu has a chance to dis-
  48.          play, it will execute  your selection immediately without show-
  49.          ing the menu.

  52.        * Reorganized the manual
  53.  
  54.          The manual now has a table  of contents and the commands, which
  55.          were  in no  particular order  before, are  now in alphabetical
  56.          sequence.

  62.  
  63.          The Desq command stacks keystrokes  that open the DESQview main
  64.          menu and  execute commands from  it. You can  use this command,
  65.          for example, to  set the DESQview video options,  or to use the
  66.          DESQview menus to change colors.  You can also use this command
  67.          to cause DESQview to switch to another window.

  74.          You can now optionally add [row, col] parameters to the justify
  75.          command. The  window will be  positioned so the  row and column
  76.          are in the upper left corner of the window.

  83.          First of all  I shortened the name. Instead  of DVCOMAND I have
  84.          changed the  name to DVC. I  find the new name  to be much more
  85.          convenient to use  from the command line and  I found that many
  86.          people  renamed it  to DVC   anyway. Of  course you  can always
  87.          rename the  executable file to any  name you wish and  you will
  88.          probability  want to  do this  if you  have many  DVP and batch
  89.          files that would need to be changed.

  92.        * DV style menus
  93.  
  94.          The "style" of  the menus have changed to  make them conform to
  95.          the look of DESQview's own menus. Specifically the frame is now
  96.          made of solid lines and the  title is centered inside the frame
  97.          like DV's menus and screens.

  99.          A new  form of the description  (the first positional parameter
  100.          on  each line  of your  menu  files)  can be  used to  make the
  101.          selector letter appear on the far right of the description like
  102.          DESQview's menus. For example the menu line:

  104.            "D=DESQview Datebook"  DA
  105.  
  106.          would display in the menu as:

  108.             DESQview Datebook    D
  109.

  111.          A new special line of the form:
  112.  
  113.              %menu "Applications Menu"
  114.  
  115.          allows you  to give a  name to the  menu. If omitted, the title
  116.          from the  DVP used to execute  the DVC MENU command  is used as
  117.          the menu title.

  120.        * Additional menu parameters
  121.  
  122.          Three additional positional parameters, TITLE, EXEC, and MEMORY
  123.          have been added to those you can specify when defining lines in
  124.          your menu (*.MNU) files.
  125.  
  126.          TITLE lets you override the  program title specified in the DVP
  127.          with any  string, up to 30  characters, that you want.  This is
  128.          the title that will show in the DESQview SWITCH menu and in the
  129.          frame of the window when it is not zoomed to a full screen. The
  130.          EXEC  parameter  allows  you  to  override  the default program
  131.          parameter in  the DVP. MEMORY,  the last positional  parameter,
  132.          gives you the ability to  override both the minimum and maximum
  133.          memory specified in the DVP.

  135.          These  new parameters,  along  with  the DIRECTORY  and PROGRAM
  136.          PARAMETERS parameters, allow a single  DVP to be used in varied
  137.          situations.

  139.          Since  the parameters  are positional  they can  not be omitted
  140.          except on  the right. You can  use an asterisk (*)  to hold the
  141.          place of any parameter you do  not want to specify. For example
  142.          if you wanted (for some strange reason) to modify the amount of
  143.          memory allocated  to the DESQview Datebook  from the default in
  144.          the DVP of 64 to, say,  128k and leave all the other parameters
  145.          alone you would use a line in your menu file something like:

  147.            "D=DESQview Datebook"  DA  *  *  *  *  128

  149.          where  the four  asterisks hold  the places  of the: DIRECTORY,
  150.          PROGRAM PARAMETERS, TITLE, and EXECUTE parameters.

  153.        * Menu positioning
  154.  
  155.          Previously  DVC would  always position  the menu  in the  upper
  156.          right corner of the screen. It  will now honor the starting row
  157.          and column from DVP that executes the DVC MENU command provided
  158.          the starting row, column is within 1,1 and 19,54.

  161.        * Spawn command
  162.  
  163.          A new  command, SPAWN, lets  you open any  DVP while optionally
  164.          overriding the DIRECTORY, PROGRAM  PARAMETERS, TITLE, EXEC, and
  165.          MEMORY. Essentially  this new command  lets you open  a program
  166.          from  the  command  line   with  exactly  the  same  positional
  167.          parameters you would specify on a line in your menu file.

  170.        * Color switch
  171.  
  172.          A new  command line switch,  /C=hh, lets you  specify the color
  173.          that DVC  will use. hh is  the hex attribute for  the color you
  174.          want DVC  to use. It defaults  to /C=07. You must  set USES ITS
  175.          OWN COLORS to Yes if you specify this new switch.

  178.        * Quiet switch no longer needed
  179.  
  180.          You no  longer need to  specify the /Q  command line switch  to
  181.          keep  DVC  from  displaying  its  copyright  information on the
  182.          screen.

  184.          You can type  DVC without any parameters to  show copyright and
  185.          registration information and you can  type DVC HELP to show the
  186.          help screen.

  189.        * Enhanced mouse support
  190.  
  191.          Mouse support  has been enhanced somewhat.  As before, you must
  192.          still  virtualize  the  window  that  is  running DVC for mouse
  193.          support to be enabled. This  is because the mouse driver writes
  194.          directly to the video buffer.
  195.  
  196.          The mouse cursor is not displayed  until you move the mouse. It
  197.          is  displayed as  a diamond  just  like  DV uses  but it  works
  198.          differently from DV. When in a  menu, clicking on the item that
  199.          is highlighted executes  the item but clicking on  an item that
  200.          is not highlighted  only moves the highlight bar  to that item.
  201.          The highlight bar  does not follow the mouse  cursor as it does
  202.          in DESQview's menus. The mouse  cursor can not be moved outside
  203.          of the menu window.

  205.          Clicking the right button acts  like the ESCape key closing the
  206.          menu  without doing  anything. You  can press  both buttons  to
  207.          bring up the DESQview menu.

  210.        * Uses more memory
  211.  
  212.          DVC now requires the minimum memory to be set to at least 128k.
