Ultima VII - The Black Gate Copy Protection Notes
─────────────────────────────────────────────────
I have played very little of the game, so can only include protection up till
my current location in the game. Unlike other Ultima games of the past, there
is no immediate doc checking, or checking of the master disks for authenticity.
Instead, I have in fact only found one case of copy protection so far, and I
hope that Origin is kind enough to limit it to this one! Upon arrival in the
game you will find yourself walled up within the city of Trinsic, where you
discover there has been a terrible murder. Unfortunatly, you cannot just up
and leave the town, as when you try, they guards ask you for the password.
Further investigation will lead you to Mayor Finnigan for the password. He
will inform you that you must investigate the murder and give him a satisfac-
tory report, which will make you have to talk to everyone in town. In the
end when you have finished the report, he will say that he needs now to know
that you are the one true Avatar, and asks you to use your cloth map (enclosed
in the game) to answer questions about various locations in Britannia. The
questions were limited to lattitude and longitue coordinates of different
locations in Britannia for myself, but I cannot rule out other checks!
Obviously, there is no way for me to include a map of the game without the
use of a scanner, and even then you would need the capability of printing the
map in a legible format. Instead, I suggest the following. I have compiled
a list for use here. The list contains all the towns and locations of interest
in Britannia with the lattitude and longitude coordinates nearest it (the game
keeps it to 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 for the check).
For example, the Mayor will say, "What is the lattitue that runs directly
through the center of the Buccaneer's Den". Then a little counter thing pops
up with the number zero. Use the left-right arrows on the screen to lower and
higher the value. (Which in this case is 60). There are at least 5 questions
I believe, but they are all based on what is the NEAREST lattitude/longitude,
and not the EXACT value. Locations with only one value indicate that the lat/
long runs directly through that location, while locations with two values shown
indicate that the location is almost directly between the said lat/long and it
could be either value (although the questions I was asked were VERY straight
forward, for a location with a lat/long that cut it right down the middle!)
This should be easy enough for anyone to get past this point in the game. From
then on you can leave the town and journey to wherever you wish, and so far, I
have not been asked any questions about the map or docs ever again (in over 10
hours of playing, and the exploring of Trinsic, Paws, and Britain).
Good Luck Avatar! Who knows, this will probably also help you to find some
islands and locations otherwise dificult to find without a map. Just make
sure you get a sextant!
