PATCHING NORTON COMMANDER 3.0 TO VIEW ZIP FILES:
Norton Commander 3.0 contains many file format viewers. Quite a
few are those you won't be using without the source program. I
really wanted to be able to view ZIP format files, so I came up
with the following patch:
1.)Make a backup copy of NCMAIN.EXE in case of an error.
2.)Fire up your favorite hex editor (I used Norton Utility's
DE.EXE) and search for the string "pcxview.exe". (No quotes)
Replace that string with ZIPVIEW.EXE I selected PCXVIEW since I
rarely find a PCX file that is viewable. Your mileage may vary.
There seems to be a correlation between the viewer's name and
the extension specified (see 3. below), so you might be able to
use one of the database viewers instead.
3.)Search for the string "pcx" and replace with "zip".
4.)Write the changes and quit the editor.
5.)Copy your favorite zip viewing utility to ZIPVIEW.EXE and
place this file in the Norton Commander directory. I used
Gordon Haff's ZRay 1.25 (ZR125.xxx). Raymond T. Kaya's RVS.EXE
(RVS091.xxx) would have been preferrable as it looks/works like
the Norton Commander. Unfortunately, Raymond's program looks
for a configuration file of its own and I couldn't seem to make
the connection. There isn't room in the file extensions list
for other archive formats anyway (Ray's program will view most
any archive format.)
BTW, Gordon's ZRay is patchable in its own right for color
configuration, extraction location, and text viewer. See the
docs for ZRay.
You may have to restart Norton Commander to have the viewer
working.
Hope this helps!
