Introduction
------------
READIT is a general-purpose program for reading, browsing or
searching ascii text files, program documentation, program
manuals, etc. on your computer's screen.
File size
---------
READIT will allow you to read, browse or search for text in
any length text file. You are not limited to just your memory
(RAM) size. I have used it to browse and search through over
3 million (3,276,225) bytes (46,432 lines) of text in one file.
File types
----------
READIT requires that all files be in ascii format.
Word processor files
--------------------
You no longer have to load your word processor just to take a
look at the letter you have stored on disk in ascii format.
Just run READIT.
More
----
You no longer need to use the "more" filter from DOS.
Just run READIT.
Screen
------
READIT displays 24 lines of text on the screen at a time.
Keys for scrolling and paging are displayed on line 25 of
the screen.
Scrolling the screen
--------------------
You may scroll the screen one line or one screen full at
a time, move to the last line of your file, move to the
first line of your file, move to any line in your file or
search for any text within your file.
Computer requirements:
----------------------
READIT will run on almost any PC or close compatible with a
minimum of 512Kb of memory and one floppy drive using MS_Dos
or PC_DOS 2.1 or better. As with most programs that access a
disk drive, a hard drive speeds things up a trememdous amount.
READIT will operate with Monochrome, CGA, EGA & VGA displays.

Starting READIT from DOS:
-------------------------
READIT filename.ext
filename - the file name to be read in the form of:
drive:\path\filename.ext
where
drive = the drive on which the file resides
if other than the one from which you
are operating.
\path\ = a subdirectory path if other than the
one from which you ar operating.
filename.ext = the actual name of the file.
Examples:
c:\bookke\bookke.doc
where:
"bookke.doc" is the file you wish to read
and it is located in the subdirectory
named "bookke" on drive "c".
or
\galaxy\space.txt
where:
"galaxy" is a subdirectory in the directory
or drive from which you are operating and
the file you wish to browse is named
"space.txt".
or
readit.doc
where:
"readit.doc" is the file name that you wish
to search, browse or read and it is in the
same directory or subdirectory on the same
drive from which you are operating.
If you do not enter a file name at the DOS prompt,
READIT will ask you for a file name.

The Action keys (Immediate results)
---------------
The most often used keys are displayed on screen line 25 at
all times except during a help screen display. Also displayed
is the number of the line at the top of the screen display
unless you are at the end of the file. It then displays the
last line number of the file you are reading.
These keys are the Up/Dn arrow keys, PgUp/PgDn, Home & End
keys, and ? for showing a help screen.
Any of these keys will produce immediate action except the "?"
key. You must press and release the "?" key and then press the
<Enter> key for any action to occur.
The Up Arrow key: (Move up one line)
-----------------
When the up arrow key is pressed, the line at the bottom
of the screen will scroll down and off the screen (unless
you are at the top of the file) and another line of text
will appear as the top line on the screen.
If you are at the top line of the file then nothing will
happen.
The Down Arrow key: (Move down one line)
-------------------
When the down arrow key is pressed, the line at the top
of the screen will scroll up and off the screen and another
line of text will appear as the bottom line of the screen.
If you reach the bottom of the file and are still pressing
the down arrow key, the text will continue to scroll up
until it is off the top of the screen. When this happens
you will see <End of File> displayed as the last line. The
<End of File> display will not scroll off the screen.
The Page Up key: (Move up one screen)
----------------
When the page up key is pressed, the screen will move up
and display 24 more lines. If the display is showing a line
number which is less than 48 then the screen will move only
enough to place line number one at the top of the screen.
Any additional pressing of the page up key will cause no
action or movement.
Page 5 READIT Ver. 2.7
The Page Down key: (Move down one screen)
------------------
When the page down key is pressed, the screen will move down
and display 24 more lines. If you are less than 24 lines
from the bottom of the file and press the page down key, the
screen will show <End of File>.
Any additional pressing of the page down key will cause no
action or movement.
The Right Arrow key: (Move Right)
--------------------
When you press the right arrow key you will move the screen
10 columns to the right.
The Left Arrow key: (Move Left)
-------------------
When you press the left arrow key you will move the screen
10 columns to the left unless the first character of the
line is already being diplayed in column one.
Any additional pressing of the left arrow key will cause no
action or movement.
The <Enter> key: (Move down one screen)
----------------
When text is displayed you may display the next 24 lines of
text by pressing the <Enter> or <Return> key.
If you are less than 24 lines from the bottom of the file
and press the <Enter> key, the screen will show <End of File>.
Any additional pressing of the <Enter> key will cause no
action or movement.
Help and Quit keys:
-------------------
After the following keys are pressed and released you must then
press the <Enter> or <Return> key.
The ? key: (Help)
----------
The "?" key is used to call up a help screen and when it
is pressed you must then press the <Enter> key.
Do not press the "?" and <Enter> key at the same time.
You must press and then release the "?" key, then press
and release the <Enter> key.
Page 6 READIT Ver. 2.7
The <Esc> key: (Quit)
--------------
The <Esc> or "Q" key is used to terminate, or quit, reading
or browsing a file.
You must press and release the <Esc> key and then press
the <Enter> key to quit.
The Jump keys: (Go to)
--------------
The following keys when pressed and released and then press the
<Enter> key will cause a "go to" action.
Note: The following "n" must be replaced with a valid number.
The Sn keys: (move to screen number n)
------------
The "Sn" key means move a certain screen number in the file.
This means press and release the "S" key, then press and
release the number (n) key, then press the <Enter> key.
Example: Enter S4 and press the <Enter> key means that you
wish to go to screen number 4 of the file. The line
at the bottom of the screen would be line number 96.
Each screen is 24 lines long, so 4 times 24 equals
96 as in the above example. The line at the top of
the screen is the first line of screen 4, so 3
screens times 24 = 72 plus first line of screen
4 = line #73. This is the line # shown on the screen
prompt line.
The n key: (move n more screens)
----------
When you press a number (n), then press the enter key, you
will be moved n more screens. Each screen is 24 lines long.
The Ln keys: (move to line number n)
------------
The "Ln" key means move a certain screen number in the file.
This means press and release the "L" key, then press and
release the number (n) key, then press the <Enter> key.
Example: Enter L153 and press the <Enter> key means that you
wish to go to line number 153 of the file. The line
at the top of the screen would be line number 153.
Note: n can be any number up to the number of lines
in the file you are reading.
Page 7 READIT Ver. 2.7
The Search key: (search for text)
---------------
The following key is the start of the search for text feature.
NOTE: Case is critical.
The ' key:
----------
If you wish to search for the word "outstanding" within your
text file you would have to press the single quote ' key and
then type in the word "outstanding" and then press the enter
key to start your search.
Example: Type 'outstanding and press the enter key.
When the text is found, the line in which it is found will
be highlighted. If you wish to search for the next occurance
of "outstanding" just press and release the ' key and then
press the <Enter> key.
A search for "outs" will also find "outstanding", "outs",
"outside", etc. but it will not find "Outs". Note the
uppercase "O" in the last "Outs".
If the word has a mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters
you will have to search for an exact match.
If you are searching for Mr. Jones, you will have to type it
exactly as shown. If you type Mr. jones, READIT will not
locate Mr. Jones.
If you are searching for ASCII and you type Ascii, READIT
will not locate ASCII.
Note: In the above examples, do not include the (") double
quote unless you are searching for text that has the
" as part of the desired text.
Case is critical. You must search for an exact match.
