AUTO-PC OVERVIEW
AUTO-PC provides AUTOMATIC SCHEDULED PC PROCESSING for IBM PCs and
compatibles.
With AUTO-PC, backups, host communications, local and wide area network
distribution, and your favorite PC software can be scheduled for
execution when it is required or convenient.
AUTOMATIC:
AUTO-PC automatically performs scheduled PC processing
requiring no user interaction at the AUTO-PC workstation.
The user simply leaves the AUTO-PC workstation on and all
scheduled processing is automatic. Scheduled processing
consists of one or more batch files, programs, and/or keystroke
playback sessions called a "JOB". Each JOB is scheduled to
perform the required processing at the appropriate time.
AUTO-PC has two automatic processing modes, resident and
online.
AUTO-PC in resident mode is a terminate and stay resident (TSR)
program that determines when it is time for the next scheduled
JOB to take place. If the IBM PC workstation is at the DOS
prompt the TSR automatically calls on AUTO-PC to execute the
scheduled processing. If a user at the IBM PC workstation is
currently in an application the TSR displays a POP-UP window to
inform the user that it is time for a scheduled JOB to occur.
When the workstation user exits the application to DOS the
scheduled processing will automatically be performed. This
allows for processing to be scheduled for any time during a
normal work day.
AUTO-PC in online mode determines when it is time for the next
scheduled JOB to take place and automatically performs the JOB
processing. This mode allows the workstation user to monitor
the status of all scheduled JOBS. AUTO-PC in online mode
displays the Job Name and the next scheduled time each JOB will
be performed. Also displayed is a running success and failure
count for JOBS that have been processed. When the user sees
that a failure has occurred he/she can review an AUTO-PC audit
log to determine problem correction.
SCHEDULED:
AUTO-PC provides extensive scheduling capabilities. Scheduling
can be performed on a CYCLIC, PERIODIC, or EXACT basis for each
JOB.
With cyclic scheduling, PC processing can be performed on an
hourly, daily, and/or weekly basis. For example: Every day of
the week at 3:00 AM.
AUTO-PC OVERVIEW (continued)
With periodic scheduling, PC processing can be performed on a
monthly basis. Periodic scheduling allows for a last day of
the month selection for end of the month processing. For
example: Every month on the 15th and last day of the month at
11:03 PM.
With exact scheduling, PC processing can be performed at
specific times. For example: June 15th 1990 at 10:00 PM and
September 15th 1990 at 3:12 AM. Exact scheduling is useful for
annual, semi-annual, and quarterly processing. Exact scheduling
is also useful for special cases like the 2nd Thursday of each
month.
For cyclic and periodic schedules, AUTO-PC provides exception
scheduling. With exception scheduling, the user selects days
of the year that may be processing exceptions, i.e. company
holidays. For periodic scheduling Saturdays and Sundays can be
included as exceptions. With AUTO-PC's exceptions schedule,
processing can be shifted to the previous work day, shifted to
the next work day, not performed at all, or performed as
scheduled.
Cyclic example: Insurance agents at remote offices need to
upload new policy information for processing on the mainframe at
the end of each workday. Cyclic scheduling is selected and set
for Monday through Friday at 8:00 PM, with "Do not perform on
Holidays" selected from the exception schedule.
Periodic example: A large firm with many remote offices
performs payroll on the 15th and last day of the month. If the
15th or last day of the month is a Holiday, Saturday, or Sunday
then employees are paid the previous work day. The firm needs
to send payroll data to the remote offices where checks will be
printed. Periodic scheduling is selected and set for the 15th
and last day of the month at 4:00 AM, with "Perform on previous
work day if Holiday" , "Perform on previous work day if
Saturday", and "Perform on previous work day if Sunday" selected
from the exception schedule.
JOB PROCESSING:
AUTO-PC entries are called "JOBS". Each Job can consist of
three different processing types called "JOB ENTRIES". Each
JOB can have one or more or the following entry types: Batch
Files, Programs, or Keystroke Playback sessions.
(1). Batch File execution is performed by using the DOS command
processor (COMMAND.COM). Any batch file that can be executed
from the DOS command line can be processed by AUTO-PC. AUTO-PC
comes with a special program (JOBSTAT.EXE) to be used within
batch files. This program informs AUTO-PC of batch file success
or failure. This program is used along with the DOS errorlevel
indicator. (2). Although a PC program can be executed from a
batch file or with a keystroke playback session, AUTO-PC allows
a program to be directly executed. AUTO-PC will set the JOB
status indicator by checking the exit code that the program
returns to DOS. (3). AUTO-PC features keystroke capture and
playback for PC programs that require user input to be entered.
Once a keystroke capture session has been performed, it can be
entered into a JOB for scheduled playback.
AUTO-PC FEATURES
* AUTO-PC is written in Assembler and 'C' for optimum memory usage
and execution time.
* AUTO-PC is available for all IBM PCs and compatibles running DOS.
* AUTO-PC features a keystroke capture and playback to execute
common PC applications that require user input. Once captured,
the keystroke session can be configured for scheduled playback.
* AUTO-PC uses memory overlays to provide the JOB processing with
as much available memory in the system as possible when the
schedule time occurs. AUTO-PC uses less than 22K of memory at
the JOB processing time.
* AUTO-PC provides usage security by providing password protection.
* AUTO-PC provides data security by using an encrypted data base
to store all JOB processing entries.
* AUTO-PC includes an ONLINE mode to monitor all JOB processing.
* AUTO-PC includes a Terminate and Stay Resident mode so scheduling
can be set during normal working hours. In this mode a user in
an application is notified with a POP-UP window that a schedule
time has occurred.
* Scheduling can be performed for each JOB on a cyclic, periodic,
or an exact basis.
* Cyclic scheduling allows for hourly, daily, and weekly processing
and combinations thereof.
* Periodic scheduling allows for monthly processing and also includes
end of the month scheduling (last day of the month selection).
* Exact scheduling is provided for special scheduling requirements.
These can include annual, bi-annual, and quarterly processing needs.
Exact scheduling can also be useful for processing requirements
such as the 3rd Thursday of every month. With exact scheduling the
actual date and time for the JOB processing is entered.
* AUTO-PC provides National and Company holiday selections. A
calendar is generated for each year to enter days of the year that
are holidays. Universities, schools, and companies with seasonal
requirements can select all the days that scheduled processing
should not be performed or will have special exception scheduling
required.
* AUTO-PC provides National and Company holiday exception scheduling.
For cyclic and periodic schedules, processing can be shifted to the
previous work day, the next work day, not performed at all, or
performed as scheduled. For example: With this feature daily
uploads to the host system will only be performed when required,
reducing unneccessary communication cost.
AUTO-PC FEATURES (continued)
* AUTO-PC provides Saturday and Sunday exception scheduling. For
periodic schedules, when the day of the month falls on Saturday
or Sunday, the processing can be shifted to the previous work day,
the next work day, not performed at all, or performed as scheduled.
For example: With this feature, distribution such as payroll data
for the 15th and last day of the month, can be performed on the
previous work day if it falls on a Holiday, a Saturday, or a Sunday.
* For communication requirements, AUTO-PC provides a RE-TRY facility
to ensure the processing will be performed. This feature allows
for a specified number of RE-TRIES at a specified interval. This
feature will prove invaluable when communications fail because the
host system or network is down or dial-up lines are busy.
* AUTO-PC provides history tracking and problem determination.
AUTO-PC redirects all scheduled processing messages to a disk log
file. With this feature all processing that has taken place will
be recorded for review. The processing log options include viewing
functions to review the JOB processing log, included are functions
to view the complete log, view processing within date ranges, view
the log for specific JOB processing, and most importantly view all
JOB processing that has failed.
* AUTO-PC comes with a system reset program to RE-BOOT the system.
This is most often used to load and unload resident programs such
as 3270 and 5250 emulation software.
