REQUIREMENTS
Customers and Activities, referred to as C&A, is compatible with
IBM PC, XT or AT's, DOS 3.0 or greater, EMS 3.2 or greater.
Hard drive setup is recommended, although it is possible to run
C&A on a high density 5.25 or 3.5 disk. With the configuration/setup
program, C&A can be configured to use multiple drives. Floppy
drive installation is not recommended, due to disk memory
requirements.
Memory usage is controled by command line options and a DOS environment
variable. The configuration/setup program allows for additional
memory configurations, reducing DOS conventional memory use. See
the file "ORDER.DOC" for ordering information.
SECTIONS:
I. Conventional DOS Memory
II. EMS Memory
III. Memory Examples
IV. Printer Ports
V. Configuration Files
VI. Files and Locations
Please, see the "read.me" file for last minute information.
I. Conventional DOS Memory
When run from DOS command line as:
C>ca
Conventional DOS memory should be at least 464K.
Memory command line switches are entered as the first parameter. If
they are entered as any other parameter, they are ignored. An example
to minimize memory consumption would be:
C>ca min
An example to maximize or use all available DOS memory would be:
C>ca max
The max command line option offers the best performance.
The following tables illustrate memory usage with different system
configurations. All memory amounts are estimates.
Note: DOS MIN. represents the minimum amount of DOS conventional
memory used.
SWITCH DOS MIN. NO WARNINGS WARNINGS
------ --------- ----------- -----------
"" 464K 464K.. 640K 447K.. 463K
MIN 452K 452K.. 640K 434K.. 451K
Note: "" represents no memory command line parameter.
When your DOS memory is in the "NO WARNINGS" range, C&A will run
without interuption. But, when your DOS memory is in the "WARNINGS"
range, C&A will display low memory warnings from time to time.
II. EMS Memory
EMS expanded memory use is compatible with Intel specification 3.2
or later. Approximately 350K bytes of EMS memory will be used.
If EMS memory is less than 350K, EMS memory use will automatically
be adjusted. The following table gives approximate EMS memory use:
Note: DB-USE is EMS memory used for database.
OVR-USE is EMS memory used for program overlay management.
SWITCH DOS MIN. EMS DB-USE EMS OVR-USE
------ --------- ----------- -----------
NOEMS 441K 0K 135K
"" 429K 215K EMS 135K
Note: "" represents no memory command line parameter.
In addition to the command line options, a DOS environment
variable 'CAEMS' is used to prevent EMS from being used for
program overlay management. If a conflict exists with the
programs use of EMS, enter the following DOS command:
C>set caems=n
The DOS environment variable 'CAEMS' value set to a 'n', instructs
the program not to use EMS for overlay management. Upper and lower
case letters are ignored, 'CAEMS' is the same as 'caems'. To allow
the program to use EMS for overlay management without rebooting
your computer, execute the following DOS command:
C>set caems=y
This command sets 'CAEMS' to 'y' and instructs the program to use
EMS memory for overlay management. Remember, if 135K or more of
EMS memory is not available (7 - 16K pages) the program will not
use EMS for overlay management.
III. Memory Examples
Run C&A with standard memory and options.
C>ca
Run C&A with standard options and do not use EMS for database.
C>ca noems
Run C&A with standard options and do not use EMS.
C>set caems=n
C>ca noems
Run C&A with standard options and do not use EMS for overlay file.
C>set caems=n
C>ca
Run C&A with standard options and do not use EMS for database.
C>set caems=y
C>ca noems
Run C&A with standard memory and options.
C>set caems=y
C>ca
IV. Printer Ports
A printer port is not required, but without a printer port C&A
will not be able to print any of its many reports.
Printer ports are changed by a command line parameter as well
as a configuration file created with the configuration/setup
program. See "CA.DOC" document, Command Line Options section
for information.
V. Configuration Files
The shareware version of C&A comes with 4 configuration files. These
may be used by the command line option or by renamimg.
CFG File Description
---------- --------------------------------------------------------
ca.cfg Standard configuration: Printer port is LPT1,
Colors are Normal and Fail Safe = ON.
ca1.cfg Custom configuration: Printer port is PRN,
Colors are Normal and Fail Safe = OFF.
ca2.cfg Custom configuration: Printer port is LPT2,
Colors are Extended and Fail Safe = ON.
ca3.cfg Custom configuration: Printer port is LPT3,
Colors are Extended and Fail Safe = ON.
When C&A starts up it will load the "CA.CFG" file and use the
options contained within this configuration file as its defaults.
Some of the options may be over-riden by command line options.
By renaming any one of the provided configuration files to "CA.CFG",
C&A will use the renamed configuration file by default.
The command line option "P" + config file name, can also be used
to change the loaded configuration file.
The registered version of C&A provides a setup program to modify or
create configuration files.
VI. Files and Locations
C&A files used in running C&A may be located in different directories.
This is NOT RECOMMENDED, although it is possible. The following
table will show where the C&A file must be located. Your local or
default directory is the directory that you are in. And the C&A directory
is the directory where C&A files are located. Usually your local or
default directory should be the C&A directory when running C&A.
When running C&A from a different directory, your C&A database and
related files will not be the same as those in the C&A directory.
Therefore the data contained within the C&A database files in the
other directory will not be the same as the C&A directory. This is
somtimes advantages, since your customers may be grouped together
in separate databases.
