Version 5.50 UPGRADE
---------------------------
The Virtual BBS/NET ver 5.50 updates version 5.42.
Highlighted features of the 5.50 release include the introduction of
the super powerful and fully realized Virtual Multinet(r). The unique
Multinet allows your BBS to be a part of as many as 999 networks at once
and gate with complete transparency between them (see Multinet.doc).
VBBS can now be a multi-node server for many of these networks as
well, including VirtualNET and what is sure to be a new community of VNET
based networks.
A major re-write of VBBS I/O has been written into Assembly language
routines along with the com routines. VBBS system speed has GREATLY
increased. VBBS 5.50 is THREE times faster than VBBS 5.42. The new
machine language routines enable optimized disk access and makes full
potential of your hardware. You will be amazed at the increase in
system speed even if you are already running VBBS on a fast machine.
A newly re-designed database and user data structure enables quite
a few enhancements including longer field lenghths for user
handles/names and much more.
The QWK door functions are now contained in their own executable as
are many auxiliary functions such as Voting and Teleconferencing in a
seperate EXE called VBBS-AUX.EXE.
--> VBBS 5.50 replaces ALL executable files <--
* UPGRADE INSTALLATION FROM PREVIOUS VBBS VER *
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
VBBS 5.50
-----------------------
(New Installations Please read VBBS550.DOC)
UPGRADE Installations for ver 5.50, upgrading from ver 5.42:
1) Backup:
files in your database directory
files in your data directory
your .cfg files
2) Having extracted the VBBS550.ZIP to a seperate dir run the "INSTALL"
exe as an upgrade existing installation and name the correct path to
your actual VBBS dir. (your .CFG files will NOT be overwritten)
3) Verify settings in Vconfig and change Channel 1 in CHANNEL.CFG to
reflect your modem port. (Base addresses and IRQ addresses are set
automatically)
4) The INSTALL for 5.50, when used to upgrade existing installations,
copies ONLY the new .EXE file to your VBBS directory.
It does NOT over-write any menus, script files, function blocks,
text files, or network data files. INSTALL 5.50, after copying files,
will also upgrade your pre-5.50 databases for full 5.50 operation.
You may need to copy files or make some changes manually. <--------
File to consider replacing/editing: *.ANS *.ASC *.TXT *.PDM
-> EXISTING INSTALLATIONS MUST USE THE INSTALL PROGRAM TO UPGRADE VBBS. <-
INSTALL needs to upgrade your database .DAT files, and your user account file.
It is recommended that you BACK-UP the files in your Database
Directory, and the files in your Data Directory.
After the upgrade to 5.50, you may need to use VCONFIG
to sort your Database Configuration, and Compile Network Info.
Also, check to be certain that there are no occurences
of VBBS 5.42 CONTROL.DAT on your system.
VBBS 5.50 Changes
-----------------
User record:
*Longer Handles
*Longer Names (With syntax checking)
*Longer Address Space (With syntax checking)
*More User Stats: Emails, Posts, Downloads, Download KB, Uploads, Upload KB
Database record:
*Capacity to handle any type of network format
*True Multinet structure
*Longer ID's
*Longer Network Addresses
Speed:
*VBBS 5.50 has been extremely well-optimized to deliver maximum
performance with your hardware.
Multinet Engine:
*True Multinet Engine handles up to 999 networks based on 4 network standards.
(Currently supported are VirtualNET-, WWIVnet-, FIDOnet-, and UUCP-style networks.)
Multiple networks of each standard supported.
*VNET now also supports Multiple Server ports meaning that all nodes
are now able to make network connects from any port. This is only
applicable to multinode networking software such as VNET.
See MULTINET.DOC for more info.
VCONFIG Main Configuration:
*Several New Switches Added.
Please see VCONFIG.
QWK Functions:
*Qwk functions have been moved to their stand-alone executable, VQWK.EXE.
*VQWK.EXE can be called from a function block, as a door.
An example function block line calling VQWK.EXE from a function block:
! 001 4 VQWK %1
*VQWK now handles local uploading and downloading of .REP packets
which means that VBBS can as well handle QWK format net conferences.
An example command line for calling VQWK.EXE as a door:
VQWK %1
(%1 is a replacable parameter, current VBBS channel number.)
-----------------
VBBS-AUX.EXE:
Several functions now reside in a separate EXE file, VBBS-AUX.EXE.
TELECON
LISTUSERS
SECURITY
VOTE
CHECKVOTE
TEXTFILES
LISTNET
HELP <help system #>
TEST <test file>
A few examples of how to call these functions:
From a function block:
Z 001 4 VBBS-AUX %1 TELECON
H 001 4 VBBS-AUX %1 HELP 1
From a script:
DOOR "VBBS-AUX %1 LISTUSERS"
For usage under "VBBS doors configuration" (DOS command line):
VBBS-AUX %1 TEXTFILES
VBBS-AUX %1 TEST QUIZ01
For more information on VBBS-AUX.EXE, please see VSCRIPT.DOC.
-----------------
new script commands:
*displaymsg
Displays the message header in std format, of most recently LOADed
database record.
*displaytext
Displays the text part of most recently LOADed database record.
*delay <x>
Wait x number of seconds
*suspendpagebreak
Temporarily turn off page break checking.
*resumepagebreak
Turn page break checking back on.
-----------------
ANSWER.NET:
A flexible way of configuring network detection.
[Note: VirtualNET style networks are automatic and do not require
configuration in your ANSWER.NET file.]
See MULTINET.DOC for more info.
