  19. 1) Fixed SounDemons sid emulation
  20. compatibility that was broken in the
  21. previous release.

  23. 2) Adjusted memory-reset pattern. An
  24. optional memory pattern file called
  25. c64.ram has been & added. The file was
  26. sampled & extrapolated from the
  27. memory-reset pattern of a C64C. If the
  28. c64.ram file is missing then a default
  29. pattern is generated.

  47. I knew about it for some days now, but
  48. Gideon now announced it officially:
  49. The 1541 Ultimate will also be
  50. available with a 32MB SDRAM chip that
  51. is  used to emulate a Commodore REU
  52. with 16MB RAM! &The features of the
  53. cartridge are very impressive:
  54.  512kB SRAM
  55.  4MB Flash Rom
  56.  32MB SDRAM (only on the Ultimate Plus)
  57.  SD card Interface
  58.  AR & FC3 cartridge emulation
  59.  file browser to select disk images
  60.   +DMA-load PRGs
  61.  fully compatible 1541 emulation
  62.  fully compatible REU emulation with up
  63.   to 16MB (only Ultimate Plus)
  64.  file browser also works in C128 mode
  65.   for disk image selection!

  76. "Ultimate" Update December 14, 2007

  78. A lot of work has been done to
  79. integrate exciting new features &
  80. improve ease of use of the 1541
  81. Ultimate. The following text describes
  82. the current status:
  83.  
  84. User Menu
  85. When used as a cartridge on your C64,
  86. the 1541 Ultimate now has a nice user
  87. inferface, which can be started by
  88. pressing the middle button on the
  89. board. The current program that the C64
  90. is running is frozen & a black screen
  91. with a nifty blue bar appears, showing
  92. the files & directories that are on the
  93. SD-card. The 1541 Ultimate supports
  94. FAT, FAT16 & FAT32 formats & also
  95. supports long filenames (truncated to
  96. 22 characters to be able to show it on
  97. a 40 column screen). By using the
  98. cursor keys on the C= keyboard, the
  99. user can travel quite smoothly through
  100. the directories of the SD-card.

  102. The 1541 "Ultimate"
  103. This screen allows the user to select a
  104. floppy image to mount (i.e. to change
  105. floppy disks) or to create new floppies
  106. or new directories. This makes it easy
  107. to manage large numbers of floppies.
  108. The menu also allows the user to change
  109. the IEC address of the 1541 drive by
  110. simply pressing 8, 9, 0 or 1. Since
  111. this also resets the 1541 drive, it can
  112. also be used for a manual reset of the
  113. drive. In addition to mounting floppies
  114. to the 1541 drive, the user can also
  115. select separate program. These can be
  116. loaded directly into the memory of the
  117. C64, using DMA. Pressing R instead of
  118. SPACE or RETURN to select the file even
  119. runs the program immediately after
  120. loading. This operation is possible on
  121. separate programs, but also on files
  122. within a .d64 or .t64 files (yes you
  123. can browse .d64 & .t64 files as well!)

  125. As you start using the 1541 Ultimate,
  126. you will notice that it is faster than
  127. you have ever seen before on any C64!
  128. The user menu can be left by pressing
  129. RUN/STOP, after which the C64 program
  130. continues to run. Because the freezer
  131. menu does not run on the processor
  132. inside the C64 but on a separate 6502
  133. on the 1541 Ultimate itself, returning
  134. to the C64 program is smooth & safe.

  136. Help! It is blocking my cartridge slot!
  137. Yes, in order for your 1541 Ultimate to
  138. work, it has to reside in the cartridge
  139. slot. In order to minimize the
  140. frustration, the 1541 Ultimate comes
  141. with either the Final Cartridge III, or
  142. the Action Replay cartridge installed.
  143. Needless to say, the speed loaders that
  144. are available in these cartridges work
  145. together flawlessly with the emulated
  146. 1541 drive.

  148. 1541 Drive Emulation
  149. This cycle-accurate emulation (or
  150. implementation rather!) of the 1541
  151. hardware, combined with an accurate
  152. emulation of the floppy drive mechanics
  153. offers the user a solid & easy to use
  154. replacement of a real 1541 drive. It
  155. uses an SD-card to store data; floppy
  156. data is stored in .D64 images. These
  157. images can be mounted on the hardware
  158. of the 1541 ultimate, which means that
  159. they are converted to GCR format, which
  160. the 1541 can read from & write to.
  161. Data written by the drive is converted
  162. back from GCR to binary in parallel to
  163. the operation of the drive & written
  164. back to the .D64 file.

  166. The 1541 "Ultimate"
  167. Currently, I am investigating whether
  168. it is useful to support .G41 files as
  169. well, or any other format to store
  170. floppies with custom format on the
  171. SD-card. The drive emulation does not
  172. put any restriction to the actual
  173. format used (aside from it using the
  174. GCR syncs, since that is something that
  175. the 1541 hardware implements). If you
  176. are using custom floppy formats, or
  177. would like to use these with the 1541
  178. Ultimate, please let me know.

  180. IEC support
  181. To serve other Commodore users as well,
  182. other than C-64 users, the plan exists
  183. to have this cartridge operate as
  184. stand-alone unit, too. Since the
  185. on-screen menu will not be available in
  186. this case, the user needs another
  187. method to select the floppy image. This
  188. will be done by controlling the 1541
  189. Ultimate through IEC; Commodores serial
  190. port. Through IEC, the directories on
  191. the SD-card can be selected, after
  192. which the buttons on the board can be
  193. used to switch between floppies within
  194. the same directory. This allows
  195. swapping disks within a program that
  196. doesnt allow you to send IEC commands.
  197. Note that this feature has not yet been
  198. implemented.

  200. Updates
  201. New versions of the software & FPGA for
  202. the 1541 Ultimate can be easily
  203. distributed as one file, which is to be
  204. put on the SD-card. Upon power-on, the
  205. Boot-ROM of the 1541 Ultimate searches
  206. for this file, & when present, it will
  207. load & execute it. If not, it falls
  208. back to the flashed version.
