Since its inception in 1955 in Great Britain, The Guinness Book of Records has become the authoritative source on facts, feats and exploits of the world and its inhabitants. The book records the ultimate achievements of men and women as well as the superlatives of the world around us. Many such achievements are obvious entries; for others we have to exercise our editorial judgment as to what to include an what to exclude from the variety of activities that are presented to us, or that we and our expert advisors research.
Each year we vary the contents by resting some categories and introducing new ones, and we also review every entry in the book and revise where appropriate. We pride ourselves on our attention to detail, and take much care to check the facts that we present in this book. We are, however, always pleased to hear from readers who may be able to supply improvements to the text or to suggest new categories, and we welcome direct contributions from new record breakers.
If you feel that your particular achievement should be considered for inclusion in the book, you should make contact in writing with this office and include a business-size self-addressed stamped envelope. We will advise you regarding any rules and guidelines. Because of the large volume of mail that we receive, we would be grateful if you could make contact at least two months before any record attempt. In addition, a last-minute check should be made in case the published record has recently been broken.
Please bear in mind that we are much more likely to publish a record that betters a previous record in an existing category. Occasionally we do introduce new categories if they relate to an activity that has become the subject of widespread interest, but pressure of space usually means that if we do this an existing category has to be dropped. We reserve the right to determine at our sole discretion the records to be published.
